Abstract

Introduction: Varnish is one of the dental materials that can be used to protect the pulp. Raw materials for making varnish were easy to be obtained using simple technique and composition. Self-processed varnish which has 40 gr of copal, 50 ml of 95% alcohol and 10 ml of chloroform was produced. When applied, varnish formed a thin film layer which tend to porous. The purpose of this study was to analyze the comparison between porosity which formed in film layer of self-processed and  factory varnish. Method: This study was true experimental with  12 third upper molars that had been cut horizontally as specimens and were divided into 2 groups as treated and control groups. First group had 1, 2, 3 and 4 times application of processed varnish as treated sample and second group samples were applied with factory varnish as control sample. Porosity was tested using SEM then its percentage was calculated by comparing the  porosity and the tooth area. The data was then tested  with t- independent test. Result: The result showed that self-processed varnish obtained larger percentage of porosity. Started at the third application time, both processed and factory varnish showed no porosity. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study was that there is difference between  porosity which formed in film layer of self-processed and  factory varnish.

Abstract

Background: During their education, medical students face various types of stress in medical school. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant changes in communication. Technology improves the usage of telecommunications in medical education, making students spend more time staring at screens, tablets, and smartphones, which may affect stress and lead to burnout. This study aims to explore burnout and strategies for reducing the occurrence of burnout in students during online learning.Method: This study is a systematic review aimed at exploring the burnout phenomena in medical students doing online learning and strategies to prevent it. The journal articles were sought from the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Springerlink databases. We applied the inclusion and exclusion criteria to select the relevant journal articles. We analyze the validity and review the articles descriptively. Results: After the systematic selection of the journal articles, there are 28 full journals related to burnout and prevention strategies. The result defines Burnout as an individual's reaction to long-term work stress that lasts for a long time and can become chronic. In this article, six strategies can be used by institutions, educators, and students to help overcome the incidence of burnout during online learning.Conclusion: There is a need for a strategy carried out by institutions that provide facilities to provide emotional support to students; develop educators to prevent burnout during the learning process; apply healthy practices in preventing the eyes from doing ice-breaking between online learning sessions, and use various visual interactive learning methods to increase the interest and motivation of students to avoid burnout during online learning.

Abstract

Introduction: Higher education institutions are responsible for accommodating students to synthesise the knowledge and skills they obtained in the classroom or workplace through reflections. In the field of health professional education, the use of e-portfolio has provided an empirically validated conceptual model of integrated knowledge and learning. Therefore, it is essential to analyse the need to establish a new platform to engage stakeholders and thus ensure daily use of e-portfolio by students in undergraduate dentistry program in Indonesia. The present study was aimed to develop an e-portfolio platform based on a needs analysis and explore stakeholders’ perceptions following its implementation. Methods: The present study was a participatory action research study using a cross-sectional design with a qualitative approach that involved trainees and supervisors in an undergraduate clinical dentistry program. The study was divided into three stages: the exploration stage, the pilot study stage, and the evaluation stage of the e-portfolio platform. Data were collected using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders, which included faculty members and students. Data were analysed thematically. Results: The e-portfolio platform was developed according to the results of the needs analysis stage while considering stakeholders’ expectations and expected features. The results of the evaluation stage indicated a positive response from respondents. Respondents considered the e-portfolio to be very useful in students’ professional development, as it helped students to understand the content, assisted in learning, and improved their understanding of self-reflection. Conclusion: Performing a needs analysis prior to the development of an e-portfolio system provided information on technical issues regarding its development as well as the adequate supporting system required prior to its implementation. Although the implementation of the e-portfolio developed in this early stage was not conducted ideally, students reported a satisfactory impact on their learning.
