Abstract

This study aims to describe the form, meaning, and socio-cultural function of the register of language use in the short story Filosofi Kopi by Dee Lestari. The method used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis techniques, Halliday's register theory, and Lotman's cultural semiotics. The results of the study show that the form of register in this short story includes words (espresso, latte, cappuccino, macchiato), nominal phrases (filosofi kopi, signature coffee, kopi tiwus), idiomatic phrases (kopi paling flirtit), and metaphors (espresso as a life without nonsense, latte as a warm hug). The meaning of the register is divided into primary meaning (literal) and secondary meaning (cultural and symbolic) which construct the values of masculinity, gentleness, beauty, spirituality, and idealism of the characters. The socio-cultural functions of the register include community identity, expressive, evaluative, symbolic, narrative aesthetic, and ideological functions. This research supports Halliday's theory on the relationship between register and situational context, as well as Lotman's theory, which views literary language as a secondary modeling system that represents social and cultural realities. The results are expected to enrich the study of literary sociolinguistics and serve as authentic and contextual teaching materials for Indonesian language and literature in secondary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of character values within the Eight Dimensions of Graduate Profiles aligned with the vision of the Pancasila Student Profile in Amalia Najichah’s poems from the anthology Surat dari Samudera (Letters from the Ocean). The research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis, complemented by stylistic and literary reception theories. The data consist of six poems analyzed based on eight character dimensions: Faith and Piety to God Almighty, Citizenship, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Independence, Health, and Communication. The findings reveal that all poems reflect these character values, with Citizenship and Collaboration as the most dominant dimensions. Stylistic analysis shows that the use of repetition, metaphor, and onomatopoeia not only enhances aesthetic quality but also reinforces moral and social messages. Meanwhile, reception theory analysis indicates that young readers can internalize these values cognitively, affectively, and socially through reflective and contextual reading experiences. The study concludes that youth poetry has strong potential as an effective medium for character education in the Merdeka Curriculum, both in intracurricular and co-curricular contexts. Therefore, Amalia Najichah’s works serve not only as aesthetic expressions of adolescence but also as strategic instruments for shaping a faithful, independent, collaborative, and Pancasila-oriented generation.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the “Word Chemistry” technique in improving poetry writing skills of 8th-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Maos during the 2024/2025 academic year. The background of this research lies in students’ limited ability to choose precise diction and express strong imagination in writing poetry. “Word Chemistry” is a creative technique that encourages imaginative exploration and combination of words, similar to chemical reactions, enriching students’ vocabulary and poetic expression. A quasi-experimental method was applied using a pretest-posttest design involving two groups: experimental and control. The primary instruments included poetry writing tests and scoring sheets assessing diction, imagery, creativity, and expression. Data analysis revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores in the experimental group (p = 0.00000122), with 90.63% of students showing improvement, although most gains were categorized as low to moderate based on N-Gain analysis. The study concludes that the Word Chemistry technique significantly enhances students’ poetry writing skills and holds promise as a creative and enjoyable method for teaching literary expression.

Abstract

The effectiveness of the Windows Shopping strategy in enhancing the speech writing abilities of eighth-grade students at four government junior high schools in Cilacap Regency, Indonesia, is examined in this study. The study is based on the demand for novel instructional methods that assist students with the challenges of arranging thoughts, choosing the right vocabulary, and creating well-written sentences while writing speeches. The study used a mixed methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, consisting of pretests and posttests administered to 128 pupils, along with qualitative data from observations, interviews, and reflections. With average scores rising from 61. 63 (pretest) to 81. 97 (posttest), the results showed a notable improvement in students' performance. The statistical significance was confirmed by a paired sample t-test (t = 11. 52, p = 9. 83 × 10⁻¹³). Qualitative data also showed that students were more engaged, creative, and confident during group learning sessions. The Windows Shopping method, in accordance with social constructivist learning principles, encouraged students to actively explore, present, and reconstruct information through group interaction. This approach, according to the study, is effective in improving students' speech writing abilities and promoting essential 21st century skills such as creativity, collaboration, and communication. It should be used more widely in other text-based language instruction as well.
