Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Community Empowerment program through the peer education method in preventing child marriage among adolescents in Mimika Regency. The research employs a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental study design. The population consists of adolescents aged 15-18 years in Mimika Regency. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 65 respondents who participated in the community empowerment program through peer education for three months. The program's impact was assessed by measuring changes in adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to delay marriage. The study found that the mean knowledge score about child marriage increased from 31.20 before the intervention to 39.28 after the intervention. The statistical analysis showed a significant effect (p-value = 0.000, α < 0.05). The study is limited to a small sample size within Mimika Regency, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Furthermore, the quasi-experimental design lacks a control group, which could influence the robustness of the conclusions. This research contributes to public health and adolescent development studies by highlighting the potential of peer education as an effective method to improve knowledge regarding the prevention of child marriage. The findings provide a framework for policymakers and community organizations aiming to reduce child marriage rates in similar regions.

Abstract

Abstract

Children who experience stunting are at a higher risk of being infected with infectious diseases, including tuberculosis (TB). By increasing mothers' knowledge about proper feeding practices, it is expected that the prevalence of TB among stunted children can be reduced. This study aims to examine the effect of education on mothers' knowledge regarding infant and child feeding practices for stunted children as a preventive measure against tuberculosis (TB) in children. The study utilized a one-group pretest-posttest design and was conducted in the Kosiwo Community Health Center's service area. A total of 45 participants were selected using a total sampling method. Data in this study were collected before and after the intervention using a validated and reliable questionnaire on children's nutrition knowledge and a questionnaire on children's knowledge of tuberculosis (TB), with Cronbach's alpha values of 0.897 for the nutrition knowledge questionnaire and 0.946 for the children's knowledge of TB questionnaire. The results were analyzed with the Paired T-Test, which showed that the mean knowledge score regarding Infant and Child Feeding before the intervention was 12.89. After the educational intervention, this score increased by 11.11 points to 24.00, with a p-value of 0.000, indicating statistical significance as it is less than α = 0.05. Additionally, the mean knowledge score concerning TB transmission in children was 14.89 before the intervention, rising by 9.78 points to 24.67 afterward, also yielding a p-value of 0.000, which is below α = 0.05.

Abstract

Malaria remains a significant health issue in the coastal areas of Yapen Islands Regency, particularly among children who are at high risk of morbidity and mortality. To address this, a community empowerment and mentoring activity was conducted in Kampung Turu, the service area of Serui Kota Health Center, with the aim of increasing knowledge and practices related to malaria prevention through a community-based education approach. The program involved 60 respondents and was carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. The interventions included malaria education, demonstrations on the use of insecticide-treated bed nets, environmental management, and training community health workers as education agents. Pre–post test evaluations showed an improvement in community knowledge and awareness regarding malaria prevention in children. The community empowerment approach was proven effective in promoting positive behavioral changes and enhancing the capacity of parents and health workers to carry out sustainable malaria prevention efforts. This program is expected to serve as a model for public health interventions in coastal areas aimed at reducing the risk of malaria in children.
