Abstract

Household waste, especially used cooking oil, has a negative impact on the environment and health if not managed properly. Used cooking oil is often disposed of carelessly, causing soil, water, and air pollution. To overcome this problem, a program is implemented with the aim of reducing used cooking oil waste and creating student awareness about waste management. This program utilizes used cooking oil into aromatherapy candles that are useful and have a selling value. The socialization and practice of making aromatherapy candles was carried out by students in grades 4 and 5 of SDN 41 Ampenan, accompanied by Teaching Assistance Students. This activity involves group division, material collection, and the process of making candles from used cooking oil with additional natural aromas such as pandan leaves, oranges, jasmine tea, coffee, and lemongrass. The practice of making aromatherapy candles takes place from May 22 to May 29, 2024. The results of this activity show that aromatherapy candles made have health benefits and can reduce B3 waste in households. Students also gain knowledge about the negative effects of used cooking oil if used continuously and the importance of recycling. This practice has succeeded in improving students' skills and creativity in managing waste and providing potential entrepreneurial ideas. So, this activity not only succeeded in reducing used cooking oil waste but also increased students' awareness of the importance of preserving the environment from an early age.

Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential 21st-century skill that needs to be cultivated from the elementary school level. However, variations in students' learning styles often present challenges in selecting appropriate teaching strategies and media. This study aims to examine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Wordwall media on elementary students’ critical thinking skills, while considering differences in learning styles. The research employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 20 fourth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a critical thinking test and a learning style questionnaire, then analyzed using paired sample t-test and ANOVA. The results revealed a significant improvement in critical thinking skills after the intervention (p < 0.05) with a moderate effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.588), yet no significant differences were found across different learning styles. The findings confirm that PBL assisted by Wordwall effectively enhances students' critical thinking skills evenly, regardless of learning style differences. Future research is recommended to explore other interactive media that emphasize auditory aspects and to conduct longitudinal studies on the long-term impact on students’ cognitive development and character formation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Sabtu Budaya (Cultural Saturday) Program and its impact on the development of patriotism among students class V at SDN 2 Jurit. This program is an initiative by the Education and Culture Office of West Nusa Tenggara Province to strengthen character education based on local culture. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method using observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The results show that the Sabtu Budaya activities are carried out regularly every third Saturday of the month, including: wearing traditional clothing, singing national and regional songs, organizing traditional games competitions, learning regional dances, screening and discussing nationalism-themed films, and conducting school environment clean-up through mutual cooperation. These six activities have successfully shaped students’ sense of nationalism, responsibility, and pride in local culture. A total of 97% of students responded “very good” to the program. Thus, Sabtu Budaya has proven to be an effective medium for instilling the value of patriotism through a contextual and enjoyable approach
