Abstract

This paper introduces a novel Model Predictive Control (MPC)-based strategy to enhance Low-Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) capability for wind turbines equipped with Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs). According to modern grid codes, grid-connected wind turbines must remain operational during voltage dips and support the grid by injecting both active and reactive power. However, voltage dips pose significant challenges for (DFIG)-based wind turbines because voltage dips can induce significant large inrush current in the rotor, potentially damaging the rotor converter. Conventional control methods employ proportional-integral (PI) controllers for rotor current regulation and crowbar circuits to protect the converter by diverting high rotor currents away from the converter when they exceed their safe limit. While effective in protecting the hardware, crowbar activation temporarily disconnects the rotor from control, leading to a loss of power injection capabilities and noncompliance with grid codes. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes an MPC-based rotor current controller formulated as a Quadratically-Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP) optimization problem. This controller explicitly incorporates rotor current and voltage constraints while optimizing control performance during grid faults. MATLAB-based simulations for both low- and medium-voltage dips demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach over conventional PI controllers. The results confirm that the MPC strategy ensures LVRT compliance without the need for a crowbar circuit, maintaining stability and improving performance during a wide-range of fault conditions.

Abstract

In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive position controller for a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor based on a newly developed adaptive backstepping control approach is discussed and analyzed. The backstepping approach is a systematic method; it is used for non-linear systems such as the linear synchronous motor. This controller combines the notion of the Lyapunov function, which is based on the definition of a positive energy function; to ensure stability in the sense of Lyapunov, it is necessary to ensure the negativity of this function by a judicious choice of a control variable called virtual control. But this method is mainly based on the mathematical model of the permanent magnet linear synchronous machine (PMLSM) which makes this control sensitive to the variation of the parameters of the machine, to overcome this problem an adaptive control was proposed, the adaptive backstepping control approach is utilized to obtain the robustness for mismatched parameter uncertainties and disturbance load force. The overall stability of the system controller and adaptive low is shown using the Lyapunov theorem. The validity of the proposed controller is supported by computer simulation results.

Abstract

This article presents a wavelet analysis-singular value decomposition (WA-SVD) based method for precise fault localization in recent power distribution networks using k-NN Classifier. The WA-SVD leverages the slime mould algorithm (SMA) and graph theory (GT) in enhancing the overall accuracy of fault localization. To validate the proposed methodology, extensive tests are conducted on various benchmark systems, including the IEEE 33-bus radial distribution system, the IEEE 33-bus meshed loop unbalanced distribution system, the IEEE 33-bus system with integrated renewable energy sources, and the IEEE 13-bus feeder test system. The results demonstrate a high fault classification accuracy of 99.08%, with an average localization error of just 1.2% of the total line length. The k-NN classifier exhibited a precision of 98.2% and a recall of 99.2%, underscoring the reliability and sensitivity of the proposed method. Additionally, the computational efficiency of the algorithm is evidenced by an average processing time of 0.0764 seconds per fault event, making it well-suited for real-time applications.

Abstract

Interest in wind turbine emulators (WTE) has increased due to the growing need for wind power generation as a low-maintenance, more effective substitute for conventional models. This paper presents the design of a small WTE utilizing a dSPACE 1104 system. The setup includes a DC motor, driven by a buck converter, coupled to a permanent magnet synchronous generator, all managed through a hardware-in-the-loop configuration using the dSPACE 1104 board. The DC motor simulates the rotational motion generated by wind energy, accurately replicating the characteristics of an actual WT. This control system enables the simulation of various wind speeds and torque values in MATLAB/Simulink software, providing a valuable tool for analyzing and developing power converters. The results obtained confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed emulator, as the experimental outcomes closely matched the theoretical calculations.

Abstract

This paper investigates the performance of a four-degree-of-freedom (4DOF) robot arm using feedback linearization based on sliding mode control (FLSM). FLSM simplifies complex nonlinear control solutions and mitigates the effects of the highly coupled dynamic behavior of the 4DOF manipulator. The controller takes into account uncertain dynamics and unexpected disturbances such as changes in payload, variations in wind, and gravity effects in different directions. The stability of the proposed controller is achieved using the manipulator model and FLSM without linearizing the model. Stability is analyzed using a Lyapunov function, and MATLAB Simulink is utilized to simulate the real parameters of the Quanser QArm. The results are compared with those obtained using a PID controller.

Abstract

One of the main issues with grid-connected distributed energy systems, including photovoltaic (PV) systems, is the DC bus voltage's instability during load fluctuations and power line short circuits. This paper attempts to address this problem and proposes to use superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) to stabilize the voltage of the DC link and improve the power quality and transient stability of the power system. The investigated configuration components are PV cells, boost converter, chopper, SMES, three level inverter (NPC), filter, grid, and load. MATLAB / Sim Power System is used to test the performance of a SMES in order to ensure the balance of the DC bus voltage of a PV system connected to the grid. Several scenarios were considered to show the performance and benefits of combining a SMES with the PV system. The outcomes of the examined scenarios (fault and load change) demonstrate the precision of the employed control systems, maintaining the DC voltage at acceptable levels (?500 V), enhances the structure stability, and improving power quality (GPV THD = 4.34). Finally, it can be concluded that the proposed configuration will help in achieving high penetration scenarios of PV systems.

Abstract

Because wind systems are so prevalent in the electrical grid, an innovative control method can significantly increase the productivity of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG). A wind power generation system's maximal power point (MPP) tracking control approach is presented in this paper. The nonlinear backstepping controller, which is robust to parameter uncertainty, is used in this work to enhance the tip speed ratio approach.  To lower the system's equipment and maintenance costs, we suggested utilizing a speed estimator. As a novel addition to the backstepping controller development, the suggested estimator is a component of the backstepping controller development. The control and system organization approaches are presented. Lyapunov analysis is used to guarantee the stability of the controller. To assess the suggested approach, step change and varying wind speed turbulence intensities are employed. The results expose the great efficiency of the proposed method in both tracking MPP and calculating generator speed.  The proposed control strategy and structure are validated by MATLAB simulations.

Abstract

Industrial applications rely heavily on induction motors (IMs). Even though any IM problem can seriously impair operation, rotor bar failures (RBFs) are among the toughest to identify because of their detection challenges. RBFs in IMs can significantly impact performance, leading to reduced efficiency, increased vibrations, and potential IM failure. This research provides a thorough analysis of diagnosing these issues by detecting RBFs and evaluating their severity using three sophisticated signal processing techniques (Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT), and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT)). The three techniques (FFT, DWT, and STFT) are used in this work to assess the stator currents. An accurate mathematical model of the IM under RBFs serves as the basis for the simulation. The robustness of Direct Torque Control (DTC) is assessed by examining the IM's behavior in both normal and malfunctioning situations. Although the results show that DTC successfully preserves motor stability even when there are flaws, the current analysis offers some significant variation. The findings show that when it comes to identifying RBFs in IMs and determining their severity, the STFT performs better than FFT and DWT. The suggested method maintains low estimation errors and strong performance under various operating situations while providing high failure detection accuracy and the ability to discriminate between RBFs.
