Abstract

Biodiversity is an integral part of the balance of ecosystems that support the survival of various living beings on Earth, including humans. However, threats to biodiversity due to environmental degradation, climate change, and overexploitation have led to significant declines in many species and ecosystems. One effective strategy to address this problem is community empowerment through biology education. Through Biology Education, people can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the importance of biodiversity conservation as well as the ways in which they can maintain the balance of ecosystems. This study aims to examine how biology education can empower the community in an effort to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem balance. Through a qualitative approach, this study explores the influence of biology education programs on increasing environmental awareness, behavior change, and community involvement in conservation activities. The results showed that biology education can improve people's understanding of the relationship between human activities and their impact on ecosystems. This education Program also encourages communities to engage in various conservation activities, such as afforestation, waste management, and protection of local species.

Abstract

The implementation of character education in higher education plays a pivotal role in shaping students with both academic excellence and moral integrity. This literature review explores strategies, challenges, and the impacts of character education across Indonesian universities. Strategies employed include integrating character values into curricula, leveraging religion-based education, utilizing technology, and aligning educational programs with local wisdom. Examples include the use of the AIKA curriculum at Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka and religion-based activities at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, which aim to foster traits such as honesty, discipline, and empathy. Additionally, institutions like Universitas Negeri Surabaya have adopted digital-based approaches to instill values relevant to the modern era. Despite these advances, numerous challenges persist. Limited resources, cultural diversity, and inadequate evaluation frameworks hinder the optimal implementation of character education. For instance, the lack of comprehensive assessments of students’ attitudes and behaviors limits the visible impact on character formation. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted these challenges by disrupting traditional interaction-based teaching methods, demanding rapid adjustments to online platforms. This study highlights the significant role of local wisdom and religious values in fostering ethical behavior, responsibility, and social care among students. However, it also emphasizes the need for stronger policy support, resource allocation, and innovative approaches to overcome existing challenges. By addressing these gaps, higher education institutions can effectively contribute to the development of graduates who not only excel academically but also embody the principles of ethical leadership and social responsibility.

Abstract

This critical literature review examines the impact of TikTok usage on motivation and foreign language learning outcomes among students in Indonesia. Through an analysis of 26 relevant articles from reputable sources, the review reveals that TikTok has a positive effect on student engagement and foreign language acquisition, particularly in vocabulary, pronunciation, and speaking skills. The platform’s interactive short videos, diverse educational content, and the involvement of content creators are key factors contributing to its effectiveness as a learning tool. However, challenges such as potential distractions, varying content quality, and limitations in video length must be addressed. To enhance TikTok’s educational value, it is recommended that educators and content creators collaborate, providing strategic guidance to optimize learning outcomes. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating TikTok into foreign language learning in a more innovative and flexible manner.

Abstract

This paper presents a critical investigation into the use of foreign language interpreters in Indonesian courts by integrating insights from applied linguistics and legal scholarship. The primary goal is to assess current translation practices, identify the systemic barriers to accuracy, and propose actionable strategies for reform. Using the Critical Literature Review (CLR) approach, the study draws from scholarly sources indexed in Scopus, GARUDA, and Google Scholar, focusing on literature published between 2015 and 2025. The review identifies a number of recurring issues, including the overreliance on unaccredited ad hoc interpreters, recurring errors in rendering legal terminology, and undue influence from courtroom actors, all of which undermine interpreter neutrality. These problems often result in significant legal ramifications such as nullified legal documents, flawed judicial decisions, and the infringement of defendants’ rights. Additionally, the absence of standardized interpreter training and certification, combined with uneven policy implementation across regions, further complicates the situation. In response, the study recommends solutions such as realistic courtroom simulations for interpreter training, the adoption of digital tools like bilingual legal term databases, and interdisciplinary cooperation to formulate inclusive and rights-focused translation standards. Policy-level interventions are also suggested, including the revision of Supreme Court Circular No. 3/2023 and the incorporation of globally recognized best practices. While offering important contributions, the study also notes limitations, particularly in terms of regional representativeness and the underexplored role of AI in legal translation. Ultimately, the findings reinforce the importance of bridging linguistic expertise and legal frameworks to strengthen translation quality and promote equitable access to justice in Indonesia’s legal system.

Abstract

The increasing involvement of foreign-language speakers and documents in Indonesian court proceedings has brought renewed attention to the role of court interpreting within the administration of justice. In judicial settings, interpreting does not merely facilitate communication but actively shapes how facts are constructed, understood, and evaluated by legal actors. This article presents an interdisciplinary Critical Literature Review that examines court interpreting practices in Indonesia by foregrounding the relationship between linguistic accuracy and legal integrity in foreign-language judicial proceedings. Focusing on Indonesia-focused primary studies, the review synthesizes findings from applied linguistics and legal scholarship to identify recurring issues in courtroom interpreting, including the procedural status of translated documents, the practical limits of verbatim accuracy, institutional constraints faced by interpreters, and divergent judicial approaches to language compliance. The analysis demonstrates that linguistic accuracy functions as a procedural and epistemic condition rather than a purely technical concern, with direct implications for evidentiary assessment and procedural fairness. At the same time, the review reveals a persistent gap between the epistemic responsibility borne by court interpreters and the limited regulatory and institutional frameworks governing their role in Indonesian courts. The article argues that strengthening legal integrity in foreign-language cases requires clearer standards for courtroom interpreting, improved institutional support, and sustained interdisciplinary engagement between linguists and legal practitioners to ensure that language mediation effectively safeguards due process in Indonesia’s increasingly multilingual judicial landscape.
