Abstract

This study investigated the use of dicto-comp in minimizing errors in students’ writing. The study concerned the type of errors frequently made by the students after the implementation of dicto-comp and the effectiveness of dicto-comp in reducing the students’ errors in writing. The study used the quantitative approach using the quasi-experimental research design. The instrument of the study was writing tests. The study took place at a senior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Findings showed that after the implementation of dicto-comp, the students frequently made grammatical errors at 46.42% and mechanical errors at 40.66%.  Further, the t-test results showed that t-test = 2.12 and t-table = 1.70. This indicated that t-test score was higher than  t-table, and thus,  the  alternative  hypothesis  (Ha)  was  accepted  and  the  null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that dicto-comp decreased the errors in the students’ writing. It is suggested that teachers of English apply dicto-comp technique and/or combine it with another method/ strategy in teaching writing in classroom

Abstract

Writing is a critical skill in English language instruction, encompassing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. This study focuses on the affective domain, particularly the self-concept, and its influence on students' writing performance. The research analyzes self-concept as reflected in students' writing performance within the English Department of BBG University. A qualitative case study approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation. The findings revealed that students' self-concept could be categorized into academic self-concept, social self-concept, and personal self-concept. Positive self-concept was associated with higher confidence and better writing performance, often linked to previous achievements, interest in writing, and supportive environments. Conversely, negative self-concept was characterized by lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and blame on external factors. The study concludes that self-concept plays a significant role in shaping students' writing outcomes, highlighting the importance of fostering positive perceptions and using reflective tools like journals to enhance their performance. This research offers insights for educators to develop teaching strategies that address the affective needs of students, ultimately promoting confidence and skill development in academic writing.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine whether the use of the Spotify app improves students' listening skills. A pre-experimental design was used in this research. The subjects were 35 tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 Banda Aceh. The researcher conducted a pre-test before the treatment and a post-test to assess the results of the treatment. These tests were used as instruments for data collection. Furthermore, the data were analyzed and interpreted using quantitative procedures with SPSS version 25. The results indicate that the mean score of the post-test is higher than the mean score of the pre-test: the mean score of the post-test was 82.86, while the mean score of the pre-test was 62.43. This shows a difference in students' listening comprehension of English songs and narrative podcasts before and after being taught using the Spotify application. Additionally, based on the statistical analysis using a T-test with SPSS version 25 for Windows, the result of Thitung was -12.116, which is higher than the Ttable value of 1.995469 (-12.116 > 1.995469). This indicates that there is a significant difference in listening comprehension scores before and after being taught with the Spotify application at SMAN 5 Banda Aceh. In conclusion, based on the results, the Spotify application is an effective tool for teaching listening comprehension to students at SMAN 5 Banda Aceh.
