Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of adding Superbooster and Immunobooster on the estrus response of dairy cows after foot and mouth disease (FMD) infection. This study used 18 dairy cows that recovered from FMD based on veterinarian examination. Cows were divided into three groups (T0, T1 and T2). In the control group (T0), cows were fed standard feed. Standard feed consisted of forage (10% of body weight, daily) and concentrate. In the T1 group, cows were fed standard feed added with Superbooster (40 g daily), and in the T2 group cows were fed standard feed added with Superbooster (40 g daily) and Immunobooster (800 g daily). This treatment was carried out for 42 days. The results showed that the estrus rate in T1 and T2 were both 100%, which was higher compared to the control (16.67%). The onset of estrus was shorter (p <0.05) compared to the duration of the last estrus until the start of treatment. Meanwhile, the duration of the last estrus until the day of treatment and onset of estrus between treatment groups were not significantly different (p <0.05). It could be concluded that Superbooster and Immunobooster could stimulate estrus on dairy cows after FMD.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli isolated from the reproductive tract of dairy cows during estrus to tetracycline, gentamicin, amoxicillin, and ciprofloxacin. Isolation and identification of E. coli and S. aureus from 24 cervical mucus samples resulted 15 samples containing E. coli and one sample containing S. aureus. Sensitivity test was performed using Kirby-Bauer (disc diffusion) method and interpreted using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI, 2017) guidelines. The sensitivity test of 15 isolates of E. coli showed 100% sensitivity to ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. For gentamicin, 14 (93.3%) isolates were sensitive, and 1 (6.7%) isolate was resistant, while for amoxicillin, 14 (93.3%) isolates were sensitive, and 1 (6.7%) isolate were intermediate. The sensitivity test of one isolate of S. aureus showed 100% sensitivity to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and amoxicillin; as for tetracycline 100% isolates were declared resistant.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of taurine on the enhancement of the spermatogenetic process in male mice (Mus musculus) induced by paraquat (PQ). Twenty-five male mice (Mus musculus) aged 2-3 months with a bodyweight of around 35 grams were divided randomly into five groups. The K + and the treatment group (P1, P2, and P3) mice were induced using PQ. PQ was given intraperitoneally (IP) twice a week for 21 consecutive days at a dose of 30 mg/kg BW. Two hours after the administration of PQ, P1, P2, and P3 groups were given taurine at a dose of 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg BW/day for three weeks (Heidari et al., 2019). K- group was given distilled water (IP) only. On day-29, mice were sacrificed for testicles histopathological preparations with hematoxylin-eosin staining. Results showed that the mice exposed to PQ only (the K+ group) had a reduced spermatogenesis score compared to those of the K- group (p <0.05).  Taurine treatment on PQ-exposed mice was followed by an increase spermatogenesis score. The optimal curative dose of taurine was 500 mg/kg (P2 group). However, a higher dose (1000 mg/kg BW) of taurine resulted in a decline in the spermatogenesis score than those of at the 500 mg/kg. It could be concluded that treatment with taurine could enhance the spermatogenetic process of male mice (Mus musculus) induced by PQ.
