Abstract

The increasing number of elderly in Indonesia requires more attention to health services, such as Posyandu Lansia to support the quality of life of the elderly optimally. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the participation of the elderly in Posyandu Lansia activities. The study used a literature review method of 157 articles which were filtered into 10 relevant articles published between 2021–2024. The results of the analysis show that elderly participation is influenced by internal and external factors. Internal factors such as education, health conditions, motivation, trust, work, and attitudes. While external factors, such as family support, the role of Posyandu cadres, accessibility, and infrastructure. Family support has proven to be significant in encouraging the activeness of the elderly, especially through emotional, instrumental, and information support, which provides a sense of security and confidence to the elderly. However, the low level of participation is still influenced by the lack of program socialization, the distance of the Posyandu location, and the culture of the community that relies more on traditional medicine. The results of this study recommend the importance of improving health education for the elderly and their families, training for cadres, and optimizing Posyandu infrastructure to increase elderly participation.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a significant health challenge among elderly populations, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia requiring strict dietary management. Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, a natural low-calorie sweetener, has emerged as a promising therapeutic adjunct for diabetes management. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of stevia consumption on glycemic control in elderly patients with diabetes mellitus through comprehensive literature synthesis. A literature review was conducted across multiple scientific databases (Emerald Insight, ProQuest, PubMed, ScienceDirect, EBSCO, and Google Scholar) covering publications from 2015-2025. Initial screening of 312 articles yielded 6 studies meeting inclusion criteria, focusing specifically on stevia utilization as a sugar substitute for elderly diabetic patients. Analysis revealed that stevia demonstrates superior glycemic control properties compared to conventional sweeteners, with sweetness intensity 100-300 times greater than sucrose while maintaining zero caloric content. Stevia represents an effective and safe natural sweetener alternative for elderly patients with diabetes mellitus. Its hypoglycemic properties, antioxidant effects, and absence of adverse effects position it as a valuable therapeutic tool for diabetes management. The findings support stevia's potential development as a nutraceutical supplement and its integration into dietary recommendations for elderly diabetic populations, contributing to improved quality of life and enhanced glycemic control.

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a growing global health concern, particularly in Indonesia, where the prevalence is projected to rise significantly. Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) is a severe complication of DM that escalates the risk of amputations. Early detection of DFUs plays a crucial role in preventing associated complications Objective: This review aimed to assess the efficacy of infrared thermography in detecting DFUs in the Asia-Pacific region. Methods: A scoping review methodology adhering to PRISMA guidelines was employed. Databases were searched from 2011-2021. PICO strategy used keyword Diabetic foot ulcer, Skin ulcer, Leg ulcer, Foot ulcer, Diabetic neuropathic, Thermography, Temperature mapping, and Detection from PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. Quality of article assessed by JBI. Results: Four (4) studies meeting the inclusion criteria were identified, primarily cross-sectional in design. The results indicated promising sensitivity and specificity of infrared thermography in detecting DFUs among DM patients. The technology's ability to capture thermal images revealing temperature variations associated with tissue inflammation, a common DFU indicator, underscores its efficacy. This non-invasive technique allows for early detection and monitoring of DFUs, facilitating timely interventions and improving patient outcomes. Additionally, infrared thermography provides a quantitative and objective assessment of tissue health, complementing traditional visual inspection and palpation methods. Its effectiveness lies in detecting subtle skin temperature changes, aiding in early identification and management of DFUs before they progress to more severe stages. Conclusion: Infrared thermography shows significant potential in detecting DFUs early, which is vital for effective management and prevention of severe complications. Despite the promising results, broader and more rigorous studies are necessary to validate these findings across different populations and healthcare settings. Further research across diverse settings and study designs is essential to reinforce these findings.

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescent anemia remains a significant public health concern affecting physical growth, cognitive performance, and long-term productivity. Despite ongoing school-based iron supplementation programs, preventive behaviors remain suboptimal. Behavioral determinants, particularly within the Knowledge Attitude Practice (KAP) framework, may explain this gap. This study aimed to identify factors associated with anemia preventive behavior among adolescents and to determine which behavioral determinant independently predicts preventive practice. Research Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 84 12th-grade students in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Data were collected using a validated 15-item KAP questionnaire adapted from FAO guidelines. Descriptive statistics were applied, followed by Chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictors, with p < 0.05 as the threshold for statistical significance. Results: Most respondents demonstrated good knowledge (89.3%), positive attitudes (91.7%), and good preventive practices (70.2%). Bivariate analysis showed that attitude was significantly associated with preventive practice (p = 0.012), whereas knowledge was not (p = 0.293). Multivariate analysis confirmed that attitude remained the only independent predictor (OR = 6.624; p = 0.033). Adolescents with positive attitudes were 6.6 times more likely to demonstrate good preventive behavior. Conclusion: Attitude was independently associated with anemia-preventive behavior, whereas knowledge alone did not significantly influence practice. These findings imply that school-based and nursing interventions should prioritize strengthening positive attitudes and motivational engagement to promote sustainable anemia prevention behaviors.
