Abstract

Information about colony fragments survival of the termite species Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren in the laboratory is very limited. This study was conducted to determine colony fragments survival of the subterranean termite C. curvignathus Holmgren in laboratory maintenance. The test media used the Termitarium PSIH-IPB: 1999 as a glass vessel containing 4 kg of a mixture of sand and clay with 4 proportions and 4 different pH determined as treatments that would be studied for their effects on termite survival. The results showed that the proportion of the sand:clay mixture affected the survival and feeding preferences of the subterranean termite C. curvignathus Holmgren. The highest percentage of termites that survived was found in the termitarium containing a mixture of sand:clay 50:50. The highest percentage of bait wood weight loss occurred in the test media containing a mixture of sand: clay 50:50. The weight loss of bait wood is directly proportional to the termites survival.

Abstract

Fast-growing species are chemically and thermally modified to improve quality. These changes affect wood’s chemical composition and surface characteristics. This study aims to analyze the durability of fast-growing teak wood that has been chemically and thermally modified. Chemical modification was carried out by impregnation using citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400, while heat modification carried out at 150 °C. The wettability of wood was tested by measuring the contact angle with six types of liquid, aquades, toluene, glycerin, methanol, alkyd, and acrylic paint. The results showed that chemical modification treatment significantly improved the wettability of wood compared to control and heat treatment. Wood treated with citric acid and PEG 400 exhibits a lower contact angle, indicating increased liquid absorbency. Conversely, heat treatment increased the contact angle value making the wood more hydrophobic. Alkyd showed better wettability than acrylic paints, possibly due to their lower viscosity values. This suggests that chemical modification more effectively improves wood coating adhesion.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan kelompok PKK Dasawisma Lily 1 di Kelurahan Harapan Baru, Kota Samarinda, dalam memanfaatkan limbah daun kayu putih (Melaleuca leucadendra) menjadi pupuk organik cair. Limbah tersebut berasal dari industri penyulingan minyak atsiri PT Anugerah Bara Kaltim (ABK) dan selama ini belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Pelatihan dilakukan melalui sosialisasi, demonstrasi, dan praktik langsung pembuatan pupuk cair dengan metode fermentasi menggunakan bahan tambahan seperti air beras, air tebu, dan EM4. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman peserta terhadap proses pengolahan limbah, kesadaran lingkungan, serta motivasi untuk mengembangkan inovasi berbasis limbah organik. Kegiatan ini menjadi model kolaborasi antara perguruan tinggi, industri, dan masyarakat dalam mewujudkan ekonomi sirkular dan pengelolaan limbah berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berupa penanaman pohon dan pembersihan sungai adalah upaya dalam melindungi kelestarian sumber daya air. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pada 31 Agustus 2024 dan bertempat di Sungai Karang Mumus, Kelurahan Lempake, Samarinda. Pelaksanaan kegiatan ini diawali dengan penanaman 100 bibit pohon dengan jenis yang berbeda dan dilanjutkan dengan pembersihan sampah plastik dan styrofoam. Kegiatan ini berlangsung dengan lancar dan menyebabkan dampak positif terhadap penghijauan Kembali wilayah bantaran Sungai Karang Mumus dan peningkatan kesadaran bagi Masyarakat di sekitarnya.

Abstract

Red meranti (Shorea spp.) is the primary raw material for moulding production at PT Cahaya Samtraco Utama. The presence of defects in round logs can affect wood quality and reduce the usable volume of wood. This study aims to identify the types of defects found in red meranti round logs and to determine the reduction in log volume caused by these defects when used as raw material for moulding at PT Cahaya Samtraco Utama. The research was conducted at the log yard of PT Cahaya Samtraco Utama using 30 randomly selected logs. Observations were carried out visually, and the measurement of log volume followed the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 8911:2020). The results showed nine types of defects with a total of 46 occurrences across the thirty round logs. The three most frequently observed defects were heart rot, large knots, and crook. The average log volume was 8.11 m³ per log, with a volume reduction of 7.14% due to wood defects. These findings indicate that natural defects are the primary cause of wood deterioration and have a significant effect on the efficiency of raw material utilization in the wood moulding industry. Abstrak Kayu meranti merah (Shorea spp.) merupakan bahan baku utama produksi mo ulding di PT Cahaya Samtraco Utama. Keberadaan cacat pada kayu bulat dapat memengaruhi mutu kayu dan mengurangi volume kayu yang akan digunakan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis cacat yang terdapat pada kayu bulat meranti merah dan pengurangan volume kayu bulat akibat adanya cacat kayu sebagai bahan baku moulding di PT Cahaya Samtraco Utama. Penelitian dilakukan di logyard PT Cahaya Samtraco Utama dengan menggunakan 30 batang yang dipilih secara acak. Pengamatan dilakukan secara visual dan pengukuran volume kayu bulat mengikuti Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI) 8911:2020. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, terdapat sembilan jenis cacat, dengan total kemunculan 46 cacat pada tiga puluh batang kayu bulat. Terdapat tiga jenis cacat yang paling banyak ditemukan yaitu, hati rapuh, mata kayu besar, dan bengkok. Rata-rata volume kayu bulat sebesar 8,11 m3 per batang dengan reduksi volume akibat cacat kayu sebesar 7,14%. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa cacat alami merupakan faktor utama kerusakan kayu dan berpengaruh terhadap efisiensi pemanfaatan bahan baku moulding di Industri Pengolahan Kayu.
