Abstract

Despite being part of food web and bioindicator in freshwater ecosystems, gastropods are globally jeopardized. Therefore, the occurence of freshwater gastropods need to be assessed. This research aimed to examine diversity and distribution of freshwater gastropods along the Ciapus River in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. The research was conducted from February to May 2020. Sampling was carried out within limited 15 minutes time period using five 1 × 1 m plots established at each of four survey stations. Gastropods were collected from the bottom of river, rock surface and riverbanks within 15-100 cm of water depth. Environmental parameters were recorded. Data was analyzed using biodiversity index parameters and diversity t-test. The survey collected a total 587 individuals from 7 species of freshwater gastropods. The abundance, species richness and diversity of gastropods in the Ciapus river were different between upstream and downstream, location with high altitude tend to have low number of species. Glyptophysa stagnalis became the only species recorded from upstream area. Meanwhile, there were 4 species, which were collected in other three stations and 2 species that recorded from two stations. In three stations, Tarebia granifera was the most dominant species.

Graphical Abstract   Highlight Research Approximately 3978 sponge individuals were collected and grouped to 137 morphospecies, with 120 of these have been identified intothree classes, 17 orders, 40 families, and at least 70 genera. Sponges in the Makassar Strait showed significant differences based on individual abundance data. Pannikiang Island had the greatest abundance and diversity of sponges, and the lowest found in Gusung Toraja. The sponge composition of the three islands indicated that neighboring islands do not guarantee high similarity.     Abstract Sponges are an important and dominant component of marine benthos which are threatened due to global environmental degradation. To establish appropriate conservation policies, the diversity and distribution of sponge must be understood. Meanwhile, the availability of sponge diversity and distribution especially in the Makassar Strait, is still lacking. This study aimed to investigated the diversity and distribution of the sponges composition in coral reef ecosystems on three less-explored islands in the Makassar Strait (South and West Sulawesi provinces, Indonesia). Sponge assemblages were sampled at a depth of 5 m using Underwater Photo Transect method, with a total area of 15 m2 at each site. We recorded a total of 137 morphospecies of sponges (N = 3978 individuals), 59 of which were restricted to Barrang Caddi, 39 to Gusung Toraja, and 92 to Pannikiang. Only 12 species were shared among all islands. We found ten morphological types of sponge, with the dominant type in all islands was encrusting. Our results showed that Pannikiang island represents the  highest diversity and abundance of sponges, which had the largest area compared to the other islands and is surrounded by mangrove forests. There was a significant difference in species composition between Pannikiang and other islands.

Abstract

Studies on microdebris contamination in sediments at the estuary of the Pangkajene River were carried out at three stations. This study aims to observe the abundance and characteristics of microdebris in the estuary sediments of the Pangkajene River. The samples of sediment were collected using a core sampler with a diameter of 8 cm. Microdebris was extracted using the flotation method and vacuum filtration system. The particles were observed with a stereomicroscope then classified based on shape (form), size, and color. The number of particles found ranged from 2.83±2.04-4.00±1.87 item/100gr. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed p>0.05, therefore the abundance of microdebris between the three stations did not show a significant difference. Microdebris in Fragment form had the highest percentage compared to fibers and granules. Blue and black particles of microdebris were the most common colors. The dominant size of particles was found in the size class <100µm and 100µm-500µm. This preliminary study revealed that the microdebris occurs in the Pangkajene estuary sediments. Currently, we have not classified the types of microdebris found as microplastic, semi-synthetic debris, or natural origin. Therefore, further research is needed to verify particles using an FT-IR Microscope to determine the type of microdebris polymer.

Abstract

The sustainability of livestock ecosystems increasingly depends on improving feed conversion efficiency and reducing reliance on synthetic chemical additives. Probiotics offer a biological alternative to enhance poultry productivity while maintaining ecological balance. This study aims to evaluate the enhancement of egg protein content in laying hens (Gallus sp.) through the integration of liquid probiotics into sustainable poultry systems. The research followed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments: control (M0), liquid probiotic culture (M1), and commercial probiotic (M2). Egg protein content was analyzed using the Kjeldahl method, involving digestion, distillation, and titration to determine total nitrogen levels, which were converted into crude protein percentages. The findings indicate that while liquid probiotic integration showed a positive trend in enhancing egg protein levels, the statistical analysis revealed no significant difference (P>0.05) among treatments. The liquid probiotic culture (M1) yielded the highest mean protein content at 11.26 ± 1.361 mg/g, compared to the control group (10.5 ± 1.371 mg/g). This numerical improvement suggests that probiotics support gut microflora health, potentially aiding nitrogen metabolism efficiency. Although not statistically significant in this trial, the implementation of probiotics in sustainable livestock systems supports ecosystem conservation by providing a chemical-free alternative for poultry management and promoting long-term biological resilience

Abstract

Sistem pertanian konvensional yang bergantung pada penggunaan input kimia secara berlebihan berpotensi menurunkan kualitas lingkungan dan mengancam keberlanjutan produksi pertanian. Pertanian organik menjadi salah satu alternatif yang lebih ramah lingkungan, namun penerapannya masih menghadapi berbagai kendala, terutama keterbatasan ketersediaan pupuk hayati yang dapat diproduksi secara mandiri oleh pelaku usaha tani. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas Batulaya Farm sebagai sentra pertanian organik dan agrowisata edukatif melalui pelatihan dan pendampingan pembuatan pupuk hayati cair berbasis bahan organik lokal. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi tahap persiapan, pelatihan, praktik langsung pembuatan pupuk hayati cair, serta evaluasi kegiatan. Kegiatan dilaksanakan secara luring di Batulaya Farm, Kabupaten Polewali Mandar, dengan melibatkan pengelola, masyarakat, dosen, dan mahasiswa. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mitra terkait prinsip dasar mikrobiologi tanah, formulasi, serta aplikasi pupuk hayati cair. Mitra juga mampu memproduksi pupuk hayati cair secara mandiri dengan karakteristik fermentasi yang stabil dan siap diaplikasikan pada sistem pertanian organik maupun hidroponik. Kegiatan ini berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan kemandirian mitra, mendukung keberlanjutan pertanian organik, serta memperkuat peran Batulaya Farm sebagai pusat edukasi pertanian berbasis bioteknologi.
