Abstract

The diversity of land snail in Sumatra, Indonesia was firstly studied by Bock (1881), followed by some comprehensive studies by Degner (1928), Van Benthem Jutting (1959), and recently by Marwoto (2016). This research aimed to update the data on diversity and distribution of those two families, documenting new information on their distribution, make historical records of species occurrence, list species occurrence from inside and outside the conservation area. We collected primary data from 274 numbers of museum collections and secondary data from 29 literatures. In total, 58 species of Camaenidae and 66 species of Cyclophoridae were known from Sumatra. Fourteen land snail species, seven from family Camaenidae and seven from family Cyclophoridae, were added to the previous list of land snail species in Sumatra. There were 30 land snail species with new distribution ranges.

Abstract

Many small lakes in Bogor and surrounding areas continue to shrink by silting and land conversion that will affect the diversity of aquatic fauna species, including freshwater snails. Research on the diversity and distribution of freshwater snails was conducted in Bogor Regency (Situ Cilalay, Situ Ciriung, Situ Kabantenan) and Sukabumi (Situ Gunung) in September-November 2017. This study identified freshwater snail species, analyzed the similarity of species composition and distribution, and analyzed the influencing environmental factors. Snail sampling from each lake was carried out at three stations using 5 x 1 m2 plots. A total of 936 individual specimens from 12 stations have been collected and identified, consisting of 7 families and 12 species of freshwater snails. Filopaludina javanica dominates the population in Situ Cilalay, Situ Ciriung, and Situ Kabantenan with the presence of 417 individuals (44.5%), while Melanoides tuberculata is the most widely distributed species found in 11 of 12 stations. The presence of two species, Clea sp. found in Situ Cilalay and Polypylis kennardi found in Situ Ciriung and Situ Kabantenan, has not been reported previously.

Abstract

Worker bees actively forage to supply colony necessity i.e., pollens, nectar, and resin. Flight activities of the worker bees are influenced by food availability and environmental conditions. This study aimed to measure flight activities of Lepidotrigona terminata in terms of leaving and returning to the nest (including carrying of pollen and pollen type) and their relation to environmental conditions. The observation of flight activities of L. terminata were conducted from August to December 2016, at 07.00-17.00 for 1 minute with 1 hour interval. Pollen load and pollen types were analyzed by the acetolysis method. Flight activities of leaving and returning to the nest were lower at 07.00-08.00 (1 individual/min) and at 16.00-17.00 (2 individuals/min). However, the peak activities occurred at 10.00 until 13.00 (8 and 6 individuals/min for leaving and returning to the nest, respectively). Temperature and light intensity were positively correlated with flight activities of bees that carried nectar and resin, as well as leaving the nest without garbage. The returned workers averagely carried 32,696 pollen grains from four pollen types. Based on selection index values, this stingless bee species mostly preferred Araceae (â±³i=1.522) plant family for pollen resources to others, Anacardiaceae, Aceraceae, and Acanthaceae (x2=39.32, p<0.01).

Abstract

Apis cerana has a wide distribution in Asia, including Sundaland, and is currently found in Wallacea, while the sister species, A. nigrocincta, is native in Sulawesi. The wide geographic distribution and the island isolation led to form morphological differences in the bees. The morph and wing venations are known to have a high genetic inheritance. Therefore, this research aimed to (1) analyze the landmark variation of wing venations of A. cerana from Sundaland and Wallacea, and A. nigrocincta from Sulawesi, (2) determine the relationship between these two bee species. The research was conducted by digitizing 550 wing venations based on nineteen landmarks. Our study on intraspecies showed that A. cerana Sumatra revealed a high variation in bending energy. Overall, the deformation grid of A. cerana from Sundaland has higher displacement than those from Wallacea, meaning higher variations of the Sundaland A. cerana. We found geometric morphometric markers of landmarks 16 and 17 in intraspecies and interspecies bees. Thus, these landmarks known as a cubital index can be used for species identification. The differentiation of interspecies has been shown in the PCA. Apis nigrocincta was separated from the single group of the centroid A. cerana and was supported by the Neighbor-Joining tree.

Abstract

The use of traps for insect surveilance on nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt) plantation is one of the earliest steps in this study since the information of nutmeg pest is barely available. In this study, four traps were used, namely Brown-Black Sticky Trap (BBST), Yellow Sticky Trap (YST), Glass Ambrosia Beetle Trap (GABT), and Plastic Pannel Trap (PPT) placed at 1,5 m high on nutmeg plants around Paya Teuk village (South Aceh). Those traps were accompanied by 35%-ethanol, nutmeg oil, and 35%-ethanol mixed with nutmeg oil as attractans. The observation with 4 types of trap with 3 different attractans and water as control have captured 10 orders, 51 families, 124 morphospecies, and 1027 individuals. Five families with the most numerous individuals were Nitidulidae, Tephritidae, Cicadellidae, Formicidae and Scolitidae. Individuals from Scolitidae and Nitidulidae family were mostly captured by BBST with 35% ethanol, and significantly different with the other traps (two way annova, P<0,05). The number of individuals from Tephritidae were mostly caught by YST using nutmeg oil as an attractan (two way Annova, P<0,05). Each type of trap with a spesific attractan effectively catch a different kind of insect family.

Abstract

Stingless bees are widely distributed in tropical regions including Indonesia, and currently three species of stingless bee have been recorded in the Moluccas. The aims of this study were to explore the species and distribution of stingless bees in the five islands in the Moluccas (Seram, Ambon, Haruku, Saparua, and Nusalaut island) and compare the morphometric variations of stingless bees within and among islands. The samples of stingless bees were identified based on twelve morphological characters, resulting in two species of Tetragonula fuscobalteata (Cameron) and T. sapiens. (Cockerell). T. fuscobalteata found to be a new record in the Moluccas, and showed significantly lower morphometric parameters compared to those of T. sapiens (P < 0.001). Based on non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis, the combination of twelve morphometric parameters between T. fuscobalteata and T. sapiens were significantly different. Almost all morphometric parameters of T. fuscobalteata showed highly varied among islands, except the width of gena of this stingless bees. T. fuscobalteata from Ambon, Haruku, Saparua, and Nusalaut were mostly clustered based on NMDS analysis, while those from Seram show high variations. This study found T. sapiens in three different islands, Seram, Ambon, and Haruku. Width of thorax, mesonotum, and propodeum length of T. sapiens were significantly different among these three islands (P < 0.001). This study has contributed to the new distribution data of T. fuscobalteata and T. sapiens in the Moluccas and showed variation of morphometric parameters of the two stingless bee species among islands in the Moluccas.

Abstract

Despite being part of food web and bioindicator in freshwater ecosystems, gastropods are globally jeopardized. Therefore, the occurence of freshwater gastropods need to be assessed. This research aimed to examine diversity and distribution of freshwater gastropods along the Ciapus River in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. The research was conducted from February to May 2020. Sampling was carried out within limited 15 minutes time period using five 1 × 1 m plots established at each of four survey stations. Gastropods were collected from the bottom of river, rock surface and riverbanks within 15-100 cm of water depth. Environmental parameters were recorded. Data was analyzed using biodiversity index parameters and diversity t-test. The survey collected a total 587 individuals from 7 species of freshwater gastropods. The abundance, species richness and diversity of gastropods in the Ciapus river were different between upstream and downstream, location with high altitude tend to have low number of species. Glyptophysa stagnalis became the only species recorded from upstream area. Meanwhile, there were 4 species, which were collected in other three stations and 2 species that recorded from two stations. In three stations, Tarebia granifera was the most dominant species.

Abstract

Refugia are plants that play an important role in the conservation of natural enemies in agroecosystem. Refugia plants are useful for providing shelter and host/prey for natural enemies, especially parasitoids and predators. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of refugia and different planting seasons on the diversity and species composition of natural enemies (especially predatory spiders and Hymenoptera parasitoids) in maize fields. Field research was conducted in two different seasons i.e., dry season (April to July 2022) and rainy season (September to December 2022) in Tumpang Village, Malang District. The maize fields for the study were grouped into four different areas, with two observation plots (size 40 m í— 50 m) in each area, consisting of a monoculture maize field (control plot) and a maize field with refugia plants (treatment plot). Sampling was conducted using pitfall traps (for predatory spiders) and yellow traps (for Hymenoptera parasitoids). Traps were set for 1 í— 24 hours and conducted at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks after planting. The results from two planting seasons were obtained predatory spider diversity amounted to 626 individuals consisting of 7 families, and 40 morphospecies, while Hymenoptera parasitoids amounted to 787 individuals consisting of 5 families, and 63 morphospecies. Based on generalized linear models analysis, it was found that refugia planting did not affect the diversity of natural enemies, but affected the species composition of predatory spiders. Different planting seasons affect the diversity and species composition of predatory spiders as well as Hymenoptera parasitoids.
