Abstract

In contrast to the stereotype that docile Muslim women are confined to domestic roles, this study examines how Muslim womanhood can balance economic independence with adherence to religious and societal expectations. Focusing on the case of Indonesian ustadzah (Islamic preacher) Oki Setiana Dewi, this research explored her agency as expressed through her Instagram activity. Cultivating the compliant agency, this article asserts that consciously adhering to religious values preserves patriarchal expectations while gaining authority and financial freedom. This study utilized qualitative content analysis, collecting data from Oki’s Instagram account using "Instalouder" and analyzing captions with "Voyant Tools" to identify recurring themes. Oki's persona conforms to what society expects of women. She portrays herself as a devout Ustadzah, a prosperous entrepreneur, and a mother who is dedicated to her kids. This illustrates cyberspace as a place where women preserve traditional norms as well as a space for them to express their agency. It fosters a duality of cyberspace that is both empowering and constraining. This raises critical issues that Oki's narrative, while seemingly empowering, reinforces patriarchal norms that confine women to domestic and religious obligations, even to their agency. In other words, her portrayal emphasizes the ability to balance public and private roles but leaves room for questioning the societal structures that enforce these expectations. It raises critical questions about whether such an agency disrupts or perpetuates systemic inequalities in Indonesia's gendered social landscape.

Abstract

Qur’anic interpretation of gender equality has become an increasingly significant topic in contemporary Islamic studies, especially in the context of changing social dynamics. This article aims to analyse the different interpretations of Qur’anic verses relating to gender equality through a comparative approach between classical and modern tafsir. The study employs qualitative approach with library research method. Through this study, the author explores how classical tafsir, which is often influenced by the cultural and social norms of its time, interacts with modern tafsir that focuses more on the principles of social justice and women's rights. The classical exegeses include Tafsir al-Tabari (Ibnu Jarir al-Tabari), Tafsir al-Qurtubi (by Al-Imam Abu Abdillah Muhammad), and Tafsir Ibnu Kathir (by Imam Ibn Kathir). Meanwhile, modern exegeses include Tafsir al-Misbah (by Quraish Shihab), Tafsir al-Maraghi (by Imam Ahmad Musthafa Al-Maraghi), as well as the works of Asma Barlas and Fazlur Rahman. The article highlights the different approaches in interpreting verses such as Q.S. An-Nisa' and Al-Baqarah relating to gender roles, women's rights in marriage, and social participation. The findings of this study indicate a significant paradigm shift in modern tafsir that is more inclusive and responsive to gender issues in society, without leaving the foundation of Islamic principles. This research also offers a critical reflection on the relevance of Qur’anic interpretation in supporting gender equality in the contemporary era, as well as the challenges faced in trying to bridge classical and modern interpretations.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the implementation of School Operational Assistance (Bantuan Operasional Sekolah, BOS) fund management in improving the quality of education at madrasah ibtidaiyah (Islamic elementary schools in Indonesia), and to identify the challenges and solutions in its implementation. Method: This qualitative descriptive study was conducted at MIN 1 Bandung City. The research subjects included the Principal of Madrasah as a key informant, treasurer, and teacher using the snowball sampling technique. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, with source triangulation to ensure data validity. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing based on cross-verification from various sources. Results: The management of BOS funds at MIN 1 Kota Bandung is conducted through structured planning aligned with the National Education Standards, emphasizing efficiency, transparency, and stakeholder collaboration. Supervision involves school committees and internal auditors to ensure accountability. This management supports educational quality through academic programs, facility improvements, and teacher development. Despite challenges like limited budgets and strict regulations, they were addressed with strategic planning and alternative funding. Contribution of theory: The study also highlights Islamic values such as amanah (trustworthiness), mas'uliyyah (responsibility), shiddiq (honesty), tabligh (transparency), and itqan (professionalism), which reinforce integrity in financial practices. Findings support the Shariah-based education finance model that prioritizes planning, transparency, and accountability. Recommendations: However, since the study focused on one madrasah, broader research across different regions is recommended to validate and generalize the results.

Abstract

Abstract A literal reading of QS. 4:34 may justify corporal punishment of husbands in the household. This research shows that many Muslims have found it difficult to reconcile this verse with their conscience since it was revealed. This study aims to understand how the word ḍaraba is interpreted not literally, both in the views of traditional and modern mufassirs. This study is classified as a literature research by using the qirā'ah mubādalah approach in understanding the word ḍaraba. The findings are that by considering the qirā'ah mubādalah, it is clear that violence, including beating, is not an appropriate way to deal with the issue of nushūz in marriage, in accordance with the principles of a healthy marital relationship (mu'äsyarah bil ma'rūf). The mubādalah viewpoint places a strong emphasis on collaboration, understanding, and reciprocity from the spouses. To strengthen the marital relationship, this view encourages the rejection of violence and promotes constructive actions and behaviors. The Qur'ān offers solutions to marital problems, including reconciliation, piety, and acts of kindness (ihsan). Keywords: Ḍaraba; Domestic violence; Mubādalah; Religion and Gender.
