Abstract

The world finfish database reports that Indonesia has more than 3,647 species of marine fish in the finfish category. Fisheries statistical data divides marine fishery catches into 92 species categories. It is very possible for one species category to be composed of more than 15 different taxonomic species. This research aims to analyze the composition of kembung-mackerel species as representatives of the small pelagic group, including the composition of catches in the Purse Seine and the peak fishing season. A total of 15 specimens in the mackerel fish category were sampled to trace morphological and genetic characters (COI region DNA analysis). Other fish were also searched for local names and morphological characters. A total of 744 Purse Seine catch data were monitored from three TPIs in Lamongan: Kranji, Labuhan, and Lohgung between February to July 2023. At the same time, monthly data compilations were also collected from January 2018 to May 2023. The results of DNA analysis found four identified species often reported as mackerel fish, are: Rastrelliger brachysoma, R. faughni, Scomber australasicus, and Sarda orientalis. These results are in accordance with the morphological characters of the keel (caudal peduncle), inter-dorsal region (between the first and second fins), finlets, and combination of ornaments in the dorsal and ventral regions. All these characteristics make it different from other members within the Scombrid family. Mackerel as a whole constitutes 37.1±24.2% of the total catch after tongkol (little-tuna). The peak mackerel fishing season starts from April to July, preceding the peak tongkol fishing season which starts from October to February the following year. Knowledge about this season is often used as a basis by fishermen to change the size of fishing gear, in adaptation to environmental conditions.

Abstract

In Indonesia, Caulerpa sp. is often utilized as an edible food ingredient by eating it raw as a vegetable salad or as a vegetable. Different light intensities greatly affect the growth of sea grapes (Caulerpa lentillifera). However, this type of seaweed is still few who can cultivate it. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to analyze the growth performance of Caulerpa lentillifera seedlings at the cultivation stage in the laboratory with different light intensities. The research was conducted using the RAL method with 5 treatments and 4 replications. Light intensity (1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 Lux) was applied during cultivation. The specific growth rate ranged from 0.0065%/day - 0.0061%/day. The number of ramuli of Caulerpa lentillifera ranged from 651 grains - 723 grains. The number of tallus Caulerpa lentillifera during 45 days of maintenance with various treatments ranged from 28 branches - 32 branches. The conclusion of this research is that light intensity significantly affects the growth of Caulerpa lentillifera.

Abstract

Members of the Adrianichthyidae family share typical distributions, as does the javanicus group, which inhabits western parts of Southeast Asia. Javanicus group members, specifically Oryzias javanicus and Oryzias hubbsi, is the only Adrianichthyidae species that can be spotted in Sundaland Indonesia. Morphological identification and the species distribution mapping of Oryzias specimens from Sundaland in this study were interpreted using ecoregional and dendogram tree approach. Specimens were collected from 11 areas representing five ecoregions in Sundaland Indonesia. Specimens were collected from islands of Java, Sumatra, Belitung and Kalimantan. Six individuals from each population of Oryzias were sampled for morphological identification. Specimens collected from estuaries were morphologically identified as O. javanicus and specimens from freshwater identified as O. hubbsi. Distribution of O. hubbsi from Salatiga is the first record from Central East Java (CEJ) ecoregion, which was previously only distributed in Southern Sumatra-Western Java (SWJ) ecoregion. Morphology of O. hubbsi from Sundaland Indonesia has mean of Standard Length (SL) 1.56 cm, Total Length (TL) 1.94 cm, Anal rays (A) 16, Pectoral rays (P) 8, and Dorsal rays (D) 6. Meanwhile, morphology of O. javanicus from Sundaland has mean of SL 2.07 cm, TL 2.56 cm, A 22, P 11, and D 6.

Abstract

Oryzias hubbsi's distribution is rarely discussed, as it is believed to only occupy the western part of Java, while its conservation status is Near Threatened (NT) as of 15 October 2018 on the IUCN red list. Specimens of O. hubbsi were recorded from Bandung and Jakarta in the description, other reports for O. hubbsi are commonly from Southern Sumatra-Western Java (SWJ) ecoregion in Java. However, an unexpected discovery of the genus Oryzias in Semarang freshwater opens up opportunities for the hidden spread of O. hubbsi to Central Java, and especially to other ecoregions which is Central and East Java (CEJ). Morphological approaches with distinctive O. hubbsi characters, complemented by molecular approaches with O. hubbsi samples from the Bogor population, confirmed similarities of species between both populations. Genetic distance using p-distances between both populations was below 2%, both populations made obvious clusters with a gap of 0.5%, and differed by five nucleotide base sites only. This new distribution record of O. hubbsi can be a foundation for conservation and domestication planning efforts.

Abstract

Mastacembelus sp., a member of the Mastacembelidae family, is distributed across Java, Sumatera, and Kalimantan. Mastacembelus, locally named berod fish in the Brantas River lacks population’s descriptions and morphological analyses. Morphological analyses, including morphometric and meristic descriptions, are important for precise identification and classification of kinship relationships, serving as a cornerstone in the fields of biology, taxonomy, and conservation. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive morphometric and meristic identification of the berod fish population in the Brantas River, East Java. A total of 37 samples were collected from 6 different locations: Blitar, Tulungagung, Kediri1, Kediri2, Nganjuk, and Mojokerto. The morphometric measurements were based on 25 characters, while the meristic calculations were based on 6 characters. The data analyzed with PCA and CA using SPSS and PAST programs. The results revealed that berod fish in the Brantas River had morphological characters belongs to the Mastacembelus unicolor. However, notable disparities were observed in meristic characters, particularly in the Dorsal Fin Spines (DFS). PCA analysis showed significant differences in morphometric characters but not supported by meristic characters. These results underscore the importance of integration both morphological and meristic analyses for a comprehensive understanding of the berod fish population.

Abstract

The Scylla serrate mangrove crab is one of the leading fisheries commodities in terms of exports, only behind shrimp, tuna and shellfish. Crabs have a fairly high price in foreign markets and most of the mud crabs obtained from wild catches are soft shell crabs. In terms of price, cultivating soft shell crabs is quite profitable, but most cultivators have several problems such as long maintenance periods and inconsistent molting times so that they do not experience business continuity. Applying herbal extracts via injection is an effective method because all the substances that trigger molting directly enter the body. Physiological engineering is needed to speed up the molting phase and get the same molting time. This research aims to identify the ecdysterone content in purslane leaves and determine the optimum dose of purslane leaf extract which can encourage skin molting in mud crabs. This research used a Randomized Block Design (RBD). The in silicons test results show that the compound that has the smallest binding affinity is ecdysone, namely -6.80 kcal/mol. Based on analysis of variance, the best molting percentage occurred in treatment B at 55.50%. The fastest molting period occurred in treatment C, namely on days 4 to 29 after injection. Treatments B and C had the highest survival rate, namely 100%, while in terms of increasing body weight and carapace width, the effect of all treatments was not significantly different. The water quality results for all groups were still within the optimum value, temperature 26.40 – 33.80ºC; pH 6.83 – 7.20; salinity 20.70 – 26.70 ppt and dissolved oxygen 4 – 4.52 ppm
