Abstract

Recording of livestock reproduction is necessary for farmers to improve reproductive aspects of their animals. A common issue faced by beef cattle farmers is their limited knowledge; they often rely on experience without a solid foundation of technical knowledge. The goal of the program is to enhance the knowledge of smallholder farmers about reproductive management, thereby increasing the productivity of beef cattle. The target audience for this activity is the members of the farming community in Teluk Kampe Village. The methods used in this service program include extension and training on reproductive management and the application of recording. The outcomes of this service activity are reflected in the increased knowledge of farmers in Teluk Kampe Village and their motivation to improve the reproductive management of their beef cattle, based on the analysis of pre-test and post-test results. The application of reproductive function improvement technologies for beef cattle is expected to help boost productivity and improve the economic situation of smallholder farmers if implemented properly.

Abstract

Changes in lifestyle have led to a growing trend in the consumption of practical, fast, and nutritious foods, one of which is chicken kebabs. This community service activity aimed to enhance the skills and knowledge of the Mawar Women's Farmer Group in processing chicken meat into kebabs as both a family food alternative and a potential business opportunity. The program was conducted in Majelling Wattang Subdistrict, Maritenggae District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. The methods employed included counseling, training, and hands-on practice using demonstrative and participatory approaches. Participants were introduced to techniques such as marination, cooking, condiment arrangement, and product packaging. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ understanding and technical skills, along with a growing interest in developing homemade kebab businesses. Approximately 80% of participants successfully produced kebabs of acceptable quality, and 10 participants expressed a commitment to start small-scale production. This program effectively contributed to strengthening household food security, empowering women, and promoting local economic development.

Abstract

One of the efforts to increase the calving rate in cattle is by applying artificial insemination guns. The main issue currently faced by the partners is the lack of implementation of artificial insemination guns and veterinary personnel, resulting in a low birth rate. The methods used in this community service program include focus group discussions and training on artificial insemination technology, animal health management, as well as livestock fattening, and feed processing based on local raw materials for pregnant cows. The outcome of this activity is reflected in the increased knowledge of the "Makmur Sejahtera" farmer group in Teluk Kampe Village, and the motivation to apply beef cattle reproductive technology, as analyzed through pre-test and post-test results. The implementation of beef cattle reproductive technology is expected to help improve productivity and boost the economy of the partners or members of the "Makmur Sejahtera" farmer group if applied effectively.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of age on carcass yield and prime cuts in steer Brahman Cross (BX) cattle. The research was conducted from September 2 to 22, 2015, at PT Cianjur Arta Makmur slaughterhouse, Cianjur Regency, West Java. A total of 68 steer BX cattle were used, divided into four age groups based on permanent incisor eruption: PI0 (<18 months, n=15), PI2 (18–24 months, n=19), PI4 (>24–36 months, n=21), and PI6 (>36–42 months, n=13). Measured variables included slaughter weight, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, carcass percentage, and prime cut yields (tenderloin, striploin, cube roll). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The results showed no significant differences (p>0.05) among age groups in terms of slaughter weight (507.07 ± 44.58 kg), hot carcass weight (287.97 ± 23.85 kg), cold carcass weight (273.31 ± 23.57 kg), carcass percentage (53.95 ± 1.92%), and prime cut weights: tenderloin (3.73 ± 0.39 kg), striploin (10.27 ± 1.28 kg), cube roll (5.01 ± 0.61 kg). Although age did not significantly affect carcass and cut yields, the highest retail sales value was observed in PI2 cattle at Rp23,110,648. These findings suggest that while age level does not significantly influence carcass or prime cut weights, economic returns may vary based on carcass composition and retail pricing.
