Abstract

Stunting, a growth disorder in young children caused by chronic malnutrition, can significantly impair a child's growth and development, especially cognitive development. This paper reviews the scientific evidence linking to cognitive delay. The author uses data from reference journal articles and several theories published between 2019 and 2024 accessed through Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, NCBI, and others using keywords such as "stunting", "nutritional status", and "cognitive development". The findings of the assessment demonstrated a clear association between stunting and cognitive development in children. Stunting children are at higher risk of experiencing impaired cognitive development compared to non-stunted children. Untreated cognitive development can affect the quality of life of the individual in the future. Therefore, appropriate intervention programs are needed to address stunting.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: The early life period of 0–6 months is a crucial phase in child growth and development, where infant nutritional needs are highly dependent on the quality of breast milk. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plays a role in supporting infant growth and development, but evidence on the effect of DHA supplementation on infant growth is still variable. Objective: To analyze the effect of DHA supplementation in breastfeeding mothers on infant nutritional status and growth in early life. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The subjects were breastfeeding mothers with infants aged 0–6 months. The intervention was performed by providing DHA supplementation to breastfeeding mothers. Infant nutritional status and growth were assessed based on body weight, body length, and z-scores for BB/A and PB/A according to WHO standards. Data were analyzed using paired statistical tests. Results: DHA supplementation in breastfeeding mothers showed a trend towards improved infant nutritional status and growth, characterized by increased body weight, body length, and improvements in anthropometric z-scores. Conclusion: DHA supplementation in breastfeeding mothers has the potential to support infant growth without disrupting exclusive breastfeeding practices and can be considered as a nutritional intervention in primary health care.

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are common in third-trimester pregnancy due to discomfort and anxiety, potentially harming maternal and fetal health. This study aims to determine if prenatal yoga improves sleep quality. A case study was conducted on a pregnant woman in the third trimester in Surabaya from January to April 2025. Data were collected using interviews, observations, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before and after intervention. Prenatal yoga was delivered 4 times over 1 month, lasting 30-60 minutes per session. Results showed a decrease in PSQI score from 16 (poor) to 5 (good) after yoga. It is concluded that prenatal yoga improves sleep quality through relaxation and flexibility. Regular prenatal yoga is recommended to maintain fitness and rest before delivery.

Abstract

Emergency and post-disaster conditions often disrupt essential midwifery services, directly affecting the safety of mothers and newborns. Limited access to health facilities, shortages of healthcare personnel, and weak referral systems are major barriers to maternal and neonatal care in disaster-prone areas. This Community Service Program was conducted in Nogosari Village, Pacet District, Pasuruan Regency, East Java, to strengthen the preparedness of midwifery services. The methods included cross-sector coordination, community education, capacity building for supporting personnel, mentoring of health cadres, and simulation of essential midwifery service pathways in crisis situations. The activities focused on the provision of basic midwifery services, continuity of care for pregnant women, childbirth, postpartum mothers, and newborns, as well as strengthening the referral system. The results showed increased knowledge, skills, and preparedness among community members, cadres, and volunteers in maintaining essential midwifery services during emergencies. In addition, a shared understanding was developed regarding the importance of continuity of midwifery care as a form of protection for vulnerable groups. This program strengthened the resilience of community-based midwifery service systems and supported efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality risks in disaster situations. Furthermore, the activity encouraged sustainable collaboration among healthcare workers, village authorities, and the community to maintain adaptive and responsive midwifery services in the future.
