Abstract

This study examines the potential of the Cash Waqf Linked Deposit (CWLD) as a sustainable funding alternative for the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) in Islamic boarding schools, particularly in underdeveloped areas. Using a literature review and content analysis approach, the research analyzes data from various sources, including journals, books, official reports, and news articles, through the lens of Islamic economics and Maqasid al-Sharia. The findings highlight the significant promise of CWLD, given Indonesia’s substantial annual cash waqf potential of 180 trillion Rupiah, despite its currently low realization. CWLD provides a transparent and accountable mechanism for distributing waqf funds and has proven effective in several case studies, particularly within the education sector. However, key implementation challenges remain, such as the absence of specific regulations, low levels of Islamic financial literacy, and the need for greater stakeholder coordination. The study concludes that, with proper management and regulatory support, CWLD could serve as a sustainable funding solution for MBG, thereby improving student welfare and supporting sustainable development in Indonesia. Further research using quantitative data is recommended to measure CWLD’s actual impact more precisely.

Abstract

Productive zakat is an important instrument in empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), especially for those entitled to receive aid (mustahik) who face limitations in capital, business facilities, and managerial capacity. However, at the local level, the implementation of the productive zakat program still faces various institutional and operational challenges. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of productive zakat implementation in empowering MSMEs entitled to receive aid through a case study of BAZNAS Palangka Raya City. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with BAZNAS managers and beneficiary mustahik, supported by field observations and document analysis. The results show that the implementation of productive zakat in Palangka Raya City is mostly realized through the provision of productive assets, such as business carts, Z-Mart facilities, and MSME tents, which contribute to increasing productive activities and initial income of mustahik. However, program implementation still faces obstacles such as limited human resources, uneven mentoring, and weak post-assistance monitoring, which impacts the sustainability of MSME development. These findings indicate that the implementation of productive zakat still tends to be asset-based and has not been fully integrated with sustainable mentoring and capacity-building mechanisms. Therefore, strengthening institutional capacity and implementing a more comprehensive empowerment approach are crucial to increasing the effectiveness and sustainability of productive zakat programs at the local level

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of river abrasion on the use of waqf land in the riverbank area of Kumai District, West Kotawaringin Regency. Waqf land in this region is vulnerable to environmental changes, especially river abrasion, which has the potential to threaten the physical existence and sustainability of social, religious, and educational functions. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach through case studies. Data collection was carried out through field observations, in-depth interviews with nazhir, mosque administrators, religious leaders, and the surrounding community, as well as documentation. The results of the study showed that river abrasion caused a shrinkage of waqf land from 40 × 40 meters to 35 × 40 meters. The impact can be seen in the damage to part of the mosque foundation, changes in the pattern and direction of building renovation, and the narrowing of the space of the Al-Qur'an Education Park (TPA) which has an impact on rearranging learning times. Nevertheless, the main function of waqf land as a means of worship, education, and social activities can still be maintained through various forms of adaptation carried out by the community and nazhir. This study also found that community participation and the role of nazhir are very decisive in maintaining the sustainability of waqf land utilization, although mitigation efforts are still limited. Therefore, integrated and adaptive waqf land management is needed by involving local governments and religious institutions to protect waqf assets from the threat of abrasion in a sustainable manner.
