Abstract

Professional teachers are an important issue today, the role of teachers in the development of vocational education and learning competencies affects the existence of vocational teacher professionalism. This study analyzes the impact of training provided by BPSDM (Human Resources Education Center) under the Ministry of Transportation on improving the competence of vocational maritime school teachers in Indonesia. The study focuses on three key aspects: teaching performance, technological understanding, and curriculum development. A quantitative method with a path analysis approach was employed, involving 190 vocational maritime teachers as samples. The results show that BPSDM training significantly influences the improvement of teacher competence, particularly in technological understanding and curriculum development. Moreover, school supervision and work motivation play crucial roles in supporting teachers' teaching performance. Continuous training is essential to maintain teacher competence quality in line with international standards, particularly those set by the IMO (International Maritime Organization).

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing volume of waste and the limited capacity for waste management in Pariaman City. It aims to (1) identify the main technical constraints in waste collection and processing in Pariaman; (2) assess public awareness and practices related to waste separation and disposal; (3) examine inter-agency coordination in supporting the implementation of waste-management policies. This is a qualitative case-study research and was conducted in Pariaman over ten months (February–November 2025). The informants were 4 persons selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments comprised semi-structured interview guides, observation checklists, and documentary evidence. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation at the Tungkal Selatan landfill and related facilities, and document review. The findings indicate that, from a technical perspective, waste management in Pariaman falls into the “adequately compliant” category (mean score 75%). From a social perspective, public understanding of waste separation is relatively reasonable, classified as “compliant” (mean score: 81.5%). Institutionally, governance demonstrates adherence to standard operating procedures and coordination forums, which are also classified as “compliant” (mean score 82%). The study concludes that effective waste-management mitigation requires an integrated intervention comprising fleet renewal and scheduled maintenance, digitalization of operational systems, strengthening of technical capacity and community cadres, and clarification of authority alongside consistent inter-organization enforcement mechanisms. Recommendations are directed to Disperkim LH to develop an integrated operational plan, to the community to reinforce separation practices and participation in local waste banks, and to city policymakers to establish sustainable financing mechanisms, clarify institutional mandates, and implement more consistent enforcement procedures.

Abstract

Life Saving Appliances (LSA) are essential safety equipment that play a vital role in ensuring crew safety, particularly in emergency situations. However, the maintenance of LSA on board ships is not always carried out optimally despite routine inspections. This study aims to identify problems in LSA maintenance, analyze factors contributing to suboptimal maintenance, and formulate efforts to optimize LSA maintenance, especially lifeboats, on board MT. Pasaman The data obtained are data collected from observations where researchers observe directly the object of research, documentation where research take pictures using a camera as a supporting, and interviews where researches ask questions directly to respondents and record respondents answer. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the 3M approach (Man, Money, Method) to identify factors affecting the implementation of LSA maintenance. The results show that lifeboat maintenance has been carried out in accordance with SOLAS, ISM Code, and the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) procedures. However, the implementation has not been fully optimal due to operational time constraints, uneven crew understanding, and inspections that are not conducted comprehensively. Optimization efforts can be achieved by improving supervision of maintenance activities, conducting regular safety meetings and drills, and adjusting maintenance schedules to ship operational activities to ensure the readiness of safety equipment.

Abstract

This research focuses on crew skills in the use of fire extinguishers to improve safety at KMP Salvino, the purpose of this study is to analyze crew skills in the use of fire extinguishers, identify influencing factors, and make the necessary efforts to improve the ability and preparedness of the crew. This research is also useful for evaluating ship safety training and improving crew capabilities. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, with informants selected through purposive sampling, namely Mualim III, Sailor I, and Sailor II. Data was obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation using interview sheet and observation sheet instruments. Data analysis is carried out through the process of data reduction, fishbone diagrams, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that crew skills in the use of fire extinguishers are in the category of being quite good, but still need to be improved through more structured training, equitable practice, and strengthening understanding of fire types.

Abstract

Lifeboat maintenance is crucial. This study aims to optimize lifeboat maintenance on the KM. Egon ship. This study uses descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques including field observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The results indicate that obstacles to lifeboat maintenance on the KM. Egon ship are influenced by several factors: maintenance schedules, human factors, material factors, and weather factors. This effort was made based on data obtained by the author during sea practice on the KM. Egon addresses these issues by establishing a lifeboat maintenance schedule aligned with loading and unloading schedules, distributing tasks among crew members, conducting regular safety meetings, and maintaining lifeboats in accordance with applicable SOPs. These SOPs are also conducted to ensure there are no issues during drills or emergencies. With these efforts, it is hoped that the lifeboats onboard the KM. Egon will be better maintained, minimizing damage or problems during operation.
