Abstract

Maritime English is stated as one of General Courses at Merchant Marine Polytechnic of West Sumatera. Based on the initial observation, there still some problems found related to Maritime English learning. This research conducted due to several problems, namely the low level of cadets’ Maritime English language skills, limited Maritime English learning media and the absence of Specific Maritime English textbook. This research aims to produce validity, practicality and effectiveness of learning media Maritime English for Ratings Forming textbook. This research is Research and Development (R&D) using the 4-D (four D) model. This research was conducted at Merchant Marine Polytechnic of West Sumatera. The subject of this research was the cadets of the nautical class. Validity test data is obtained from validation sheets for aspects of material/content, appearance/design and language. Practicality test data was obtained through questionnaire responses from cadets and lecturers. The effectiveness data was obtained from the cadets’ assessment results of Maritime English language skills. The research results show that the validity of material/content, appearance/design and language of the textbook is in the very valid category. The practicality of the textbook is very practical. Then, the effectiveness of Maritime English for Ratings Forming textbook is found effective. It can be concluded that the Maritime English for Ratings Forming textbook can improve the Maritime English language skills of cadets at Merchant Marine Polytechnic of West Sumatera. This research can provide several implications for the cadets, lecturers and institution. Maritime English Textbook for Ratings Forming can be used as learning media for the cadets and teaching media for the lecturers.

Abstract

This community service was motivated by several problems in the partners, namely the teaching and learning process of Maritime English Subjects is not optimal because there is no textbooks that can be used by teachers and students. In addition, schools need enrichment in terms of learning media to increase students' enthusiasm for independent learning. This community service aimed to provide solutions to teachers and students through the Maritime English for Ratings Forming learning media. The method used is by socializing the use of Maritime English for Ratings Forming learning media. The subjects of the community service were teachers and students. The data collection method used interview or discussion session with the participants. The instrumentation used interview guidelines. The data analysis used three stages namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this community service prove that the Maritime English for Ratings Forming textbook can be used by teachers as teaching media, while it can be used by students as learning media. Students will get used to learn independently, because there are guidelines in the textbook that are suitable with the learning curriculum objectives. Students' maritime English knowledge and skills will increase with the availability of learning resources. The school's need for learning media enrichment can be met. The Maritime English for Ratings Forming textbook is one of the maritime English learning media that can be given to each student.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Human Resource (HR) quality on crew performance at Bourbon Offshore Asia Pte., Ltd. The primary focus of the research is on how HR quality affects the operational effectiveness of ships, which in turn impacts safety and work efficiency in the maritime environment. This study employs a quantitative method using a questionnaire instrument that has been tested for validity and reliability. The data are analyzed using linear regression to determine the relationship between HR quality and crew performance. The results indicate that the majority of crew members have 0–4 years of work experience, highlighting the need for more effective training strategies to enhance their competencies. In terms of job distribution, 53.75% of the crew consists of deckhands (ABK), who play a crucial role in daily ship operations. The regression test results indicate a positive and significant relationship between HR quality and crew performance, with a correlation coefficient of 0.926. The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.857) indicates that 85.7% of the variation in crew performance is explained by HR quality, while 14.3% is attributed to other factors. Key factors improving crew performance include individual competence, work productivity, and compliance with safety standards. However, aspects such as work initiative and task completion require further attention.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh banyaknya taruna/i yang merasa stres untuk menyusun karya tulis akhir. Oleh karena itu perlu ditinjau hal apa saja yang menjadi sumber stres taruna/i dalam menyusun karya tulis akhir. Selain itu, perlu diketahui strategi coping seperti apa yang digunakan oleh taruna/i tersebut untuk mengantisipasi sumber stres mereka. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi sumber stres yang dialami taruna/i angkatan III dalam menyusun karya tulis akhir dan mengidentifikasi strategi coping yang digunakan oleh taruna/i dalam menghadapi sumber stres mereka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 2 sumber stres yang dominan yang dialami oleh sebagian besar taruna/i yaitu krisis keadaan mendadak (34,2%) dan perkembangan kepribadian (33,3%). Selanjutnya, taruna/i menggunakan 3 jenis strategi coping dalam mengatasi stres, yaitu problem-focused coping (PFC) 42,5%, emotion-focused coping (EFC) 50% dan pshyshology-based coping (PBC) 43,18%. Dari ketiga macam strategi coping tersebut, yang paling banyak digunakan oleh taruna/i dalam mengatasi sumber stres adalah emotion-focused coping (EFC).

Abstract

Kegiatan berlabuh jangkar para awak harus tetap dalam kondisi siap siaga. Agar tidak terjadi lagi kecelakaan seperti jangkar larat tersebut dan juga untuk mengetahui apa saja penyebab dari jangkar larat saat berlabuh Pada tanggal 18 November 2022 saat KM. Kendhaga Nusantara 04 sedang berlabuh jangkar di anchorage area Makassar, kapal mengalami jangkar larat yang mengakibatkan kapal hampir kandas menabrak break water. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya jangkar larat pada KM. Kendhaga Nusantara 04 sehingga kegiatan berlabuh jangkar dapat dilaksanakan dengan baik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif. Proses dan prespektif subyek lebih ditonjolkan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penilitian menunjukan bahwa faktor yang menyebabkan jangkar larat di KM. Kendhaga Nusantara 04 adalah kurangnya kesadaran crew terhadap pentingnya proses berlabuh jangkar, pemilihan tempat berlabuh yang kurang tepat dan juga pelaksanaan proses berlabuh jangkar yang kurang tepat sesuai prosedur, kurangnya pengecekan serta perawatan terhadap peralatan berlabuh seperti jangkar, rantai jangkar, dan juga windlass.

Abstract

The research aimed to assess the effects of students’ understanding of Islamic values, the impact of discipline, and their simultaneous influence on character building. A quantitative ex post facto design was employed, using multiple linear regression analysis via SPSS. The study was conducted at Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat (Poltekpel Sumbar), studies over a three‑month period from May to August 2025. The population comprised 168 students from batch VIII and IX, of whom 50 batch VIII students participated in the pilot test and 118 batch IX students served as the research sample through total sampling. The instrument was a questionnaire that had undergone validity and reliability testing and was administered directly to respondents outside scheduled class hours. The results indicated that Islamic values had significant effect on students’ character building (t=7.101 > t=1.66), so hypotheis 1 was accepted. Then, discipline exerted significant effect on students’ character building (t=3.442 > t=1.66), in other words, hypothesis 2 was accepted. Furthermore, islamic values and discipline have simultaneous effect on students’ character building (F=115.253 > F=3.07), it means hypothesis 3 was accepted. Based on these findings, it is recommended that Poltekpel Sumbar integrates modules reinforcing Islamic values and discipline training into the curriculum, alongside implementing a dedicated mentoring and discipline‑monitoring system. Embedding structured modules on Islamic values and discipline within the curriculum can serve as an effective strategy for fostering students’ character development, thereby informing institutional policy and pedagogical practices.

Abstract

The structural damage to port infrastructure at PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) RU II Dumai poses a significant risk of oil spills, which may impact marine ecosystems, company operations, and corporate reputation. The implementation of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System serves as a critical instrument in preventing, mitigating, and recovering from such environmental incidents. This study aims to analyze the application of ISO 14001 in mitigating oil spill risks caused by infrastructure failures, focusing on planning, emergency response procedures, monitoring, and continuous evaluation. The research adopts a qualitative approach through literature review, field observation, and interviews with relevant stakeholders. The findings indicate that the adoption of ISO 14001 enhances corporate preparedness by identifying environmental aspects and impacts, developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for oil spill response, and strengthening human resource competencies. Furthermore, the environmental management system supports regulatory compliance, minimizes economic losses, and fosters an environmentally conscious culture within refinery operations. In conclusion, the implementation of ISO 14001 is not only a matter of compliance but also an effective strategy for ensuring operational sustainability and environmental protection at PT KPI RU II Dumai.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effects of rewards, work–life balance, and coworker support on employee job satisfaction. Employing a quantitative design with independent samples t tests, the research population comprised all employees of Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat in 2025 (150 persons), with a purposive sampling technique based on percentage to select respondents. So, the pilot sample is 37 persons, and the research sample is 113 persons. A structured questionnaire was used to measure the variables of recognition, work–life balance, coworker support, and job satisfaction, and data were analyzed using SPSS. The findings reveal that rewards, work–life balance, and coworker support significantly influence job satisfaction (t-calculated > t-critical; 21.849, 14.508, 21.991 > 1.66). Rewards also impact work–life balance, which in turn affects coworker support, although they do not directly influence it. Implications of this research suggest that implementing a structured reward system can be an effective strategy to enhance job satisfaction in vocational education settings. Future studies are advised to employ mixed methods designs and broaden the sample to multiple institutions to verify and generalize these results. It is recommended that the management of Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat develop and implement integrated reward programs and flexible work policies to optimize employee well-being and productivity.

Abstract

This research started from the problem of the current Covid-19 pandemic condition and situation, which makes cadets have to study online and most by themselves. In addition, it is based on the fact that there has been no specific module discussing basic terms or maritime English vocabulary specifically for each department. The purpose of this study is to reveal whether there is an effect of using the maritime English vocabulary for beginners module on the vocabulary learning outcomes and how effective the use of the module is for cadets of Batch V Nautical Department, Shipping Polytechnic, West Sumatra. This type of research is experimental with the one-group pre-test and post-test design (pre-experimental design). This research was carried out in all classes of the nautical department Batch V, which consisted of 3 categories; Nautical A, Nautical B, and Nautical C. The sample used purposive sampling in this research, so the writer only took cadets in nautical majors, with a total sample of 60 persons. Based on the results, it was found that there was an effect of using the maritime English vocabulary for beginners module on the learning outcomes of maritime English vocabulary for Nautical Department cadets Batch V. Furthermore, from the results of questionnaire data processing, it can be concluded that the use of maritime English vocabulary for beginners module in maritime English vocabulary learning is effective for Nautical Department cadets Batch V in West Sumatra Merchant Marine Polytechnic in 2021.
