Abstract

Title: Characterization of Patin Business Actors to support Jambi as the National Patin CenterPangasius has become one of the largest commodities in the acceleration program of aquaculture industry of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF). In order to constantly monitor and encourage the production of national pangasius, MMAF has established pangasius centers in several provinces, one of them is located in Jambi Province. Considering the large potential for developing pangasius aquaculture, since 2017 Jambi was proclaimed as a national fish center, but it has not been realized. The research aimed to describe a current picture of the condition of pangasius fisheries in Jambi Province. The research was conducted from February to August 2019 by using descriptive method with case study approach. Data were collected by observation and depth interview to key informan. Respondents of the research were businessmen were determined by Slovin Method, consumers, and policy makers were determined by purposive sampling. The aquaculture industry exhibits several problems including: limited business capital, disease attack, difficult obtain of raw materials for independent feed, as well as the main problem in limited access of its marketing, meanwhile In processing industry, there are a large number of idle processing units, both small scale processing units and large-scale processing units such as Fish Processing Unit (UPI) of Pangasius Fillet and common problems in marketing access. Based on above issues, the appointment of Jambi Province as a national pangasius center has not been successful. Therefore, it is recommended to enclose the national pangasius center program in the Regional Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) or marine and fisheries strategic plan of Jambi Province, to revive the catfish fillet processing unit, to expand the wide-ranging access of marketing, to facilitate the harvested catfish in permanent container, and to provide information of raw material supplier for independent food production.

Abstract

Capture fisheries in inland waters play a vital role in supporting food security and the economy of the community, including fishermen in Lake Kerinci who utilize cast nets as an economical and effective fishing gear. However, scientific information on catch composition, catch rates, and technical factors influencing the productivity of this gear is still limited. The purpose of this study was to analyze catch composition, catch rates, and factors influencing catch yields from cast nets in Lake Kerinci, Kerinci Regency, Jambi. The study was conducted from June 29 – August 7, 2025, using a survey method through participatory observation and interviews with 17 fishermen using cast nets, with a total of 34 data collection trips. Data collected included fish species, weight and number of catches, fishing duration, number of casts, and gear dimensions, then analyzed descriptively and using multiple linear regression. The results showed that the catch composition consisted of 162 tilapia (84.49% of the total weight) and 39 Nile tilapia (15.51%). The average catch rate of the throw nets reached 1.74 kg/hour, with the highest value for tilapia at 2.94 kg/hour. Regression analysis results showed that fishing duration, number of throws, and gear dimensions had no significant effect on catch results (p>0.05). It can be concluded that the throw nets in Lake Kerinci predominantly catch tilapia, while technical factors of the gear are not the main determinants of catch results. Environmental conditions and fish stock availability are suspected to have a greater influence on catch results.

Abstract

Mangroves are coastal forest ecosystems commonly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions and play a vital role in maintaining coastal environmental stability. The mangrove ecosystem in Pangkal Babu, Tungkal 1 Village, Tungkal Ilir District, West Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi, functions as an ecological buffer for the coastal zone; however, scientific information on its species composition and diversity remains limited. This study aimed to identify and document the mangrove species present in the area. Field surveys and direct observations were conducted to characterize mangrove vegetation by recording and photographing each species and examining diagnostic features, including root structure, stem morphology, leaf shape, and fruit characteristics. The results showed that the Pangkal Babu mangrove ecosystem is composed of several true mangrove species, each exhibiting distinctive morphological traits: Acanthus ilicifolius with thick spiny leaves; Nypa fruticans with large pinnate leaves and clustered fruits; Sonneratia alba with erect pneumatophores and subglobose fruits; Avicennia alba with salt-excreting leaves and pencil-shaped pneumatophores; Bruguiera cylindrica with knee roots and cylindrical propagules; Rhizophora mucronata with mucronate leaves and large stilt roots; Rhizophora apiculata with black-spotted leaves and shorter propagules; and Xylocarpus granatum with compound leaves and large spherical fruits resembling cannonballs. These findings provide essential baseline data for future conservation efforts, habitat monitoring, and sustainable coastal management initiatives in Tungkal Ilir and the surrounding regions.
