Abstract

Teaching English was not an easy task. Therefore, pre-service teachers needed sufficient experience before becoming true teachers. The teaching assistance program was designed for aspiring teachers to gain that experience. However, during the implementation of this program, pre-service teachers undoubtedly encountered several problems. This study aimed to analyze the problems faced by pre-service teachers during the teaching assistance program. Three participants from the same university but different schools participated in the study. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. The result showed that various problems were faced by pre-service teachers during teaching assistance. Almost all pre-service teachers encountered different problems compared to their peers during teaching assistance. However, some of them also shared similar problems. All the problems faced by pre-service teachers during teaching assistance could be categorized into two main factors. Internal factors such as inappropriate teaching method, material, media, classroom management and pre-service teachers’ proficiency. Then external factors such as problem related to students, disconnection between expectation and reality, school facility, and lack of relatedness between teaching practice alongside lectures. This was considered important to discuss so that in the future, pre-service teachers could be better prepared when they would teach directly to students at schools during teaching assistance.

Abstract

Reading is a critical component of academic life. Undergraduate students' course success depends much on how they process their reading. However, some studies show that students face difficulties in their reading in several terms. These difficulties are twofold for English as a Foreign Language students who have to deal with reading and language content. In this respect, students must be able to self-regulate their reading activities in and outside classrooms. This study was intended to investigate the students' levels of self-regulated learning in reading comprehension. This study used a cross-sectional design with 40 English Language Education Study Program students at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat. The instrument was a questionnaire adapted from Zimmerman's Academic Self-Regulated Learning Scale (2000). The questionnaire was distributed online to the students using Microsoft Forms. The data were analyzed using a t-test. The findings show that the ways both groups of students regulate their cognitive processes, motivation, and behavior within an educational setting are similar. Nevertheless, concerning that the fourth-semester students might be more organized SRL students than the second-semester ones, reading instructions must be structured to develop students' self-regulated learning. In other words, lecturers should condition the instructions to enhance the students' self-regulation

Abstract

In an online or a hybrid English flipped classroom, the traditional teaching and learning processes instruction is changed. The English lesson does not start with the face-to-face meeting in which the teacher will explain the materials, but the students are supposed to start by themselves studying the learning materials, which are shared by the teachers virtually before the classroom start. The materials can be utilized from many different digital learning platforms such as websites, YouTube channels, and presentation, pdf files and so forth. This research is aimed to investigate: 1) what flipped materials are utilized by the Senior High School English teachers for English reading assessment during the Covid-19 Pandemics; and 2) how the Senior High School English teachers in Banjarmasin utilize the flipped materials for the English reading assessment during the Covid-19 Pandemics. This qualitative study involves Senior High School English teachers, who teach at either state or private schools in Banjarmasin, as the subjects. The selection of those teachers depends on their willingness to participate in the interview. In short, the teachers are familiar enough with some Learning Management Systems (LMS) as the software application or web-based technology used to upload the materials. Teachers also provided some materials before attending class, and the students are required to do a preparatory study prior to face-to-face meeting. For the in-classroom session, the teachers review the materials and later use them for the assessment of reading.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the students’ engagement in the implementation of the flipped classroom method in the English lessons during the post Covid-19 pandemic. This research used a descriptive qualitative design, and the techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. The data were obtained from 23 students as research subjects. Findings of this research show that the students have positive engagement with the implementation of the flipped classroom method in the post-Covid-19 pandemic. Positive student engagement can be seen based on students' attitudes, which show indicators in the three dimensions of student engagement: behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement in a positive sense. This has been proven by the student response data which show that the students were enthusiastic about the learning activities conducted in the flipped classroom because they already had the knowledge they gained before the meeting. Students feel more prepared to participate in the discussion process in class, enthusiastically participate in the learning activities, and can study independently.

Abstract

Abstract

English teachers have to use the best reading teaching techniques to make their students improve their reading skills to understand an English text or the written language. Since reading is not an easy skill to master, teachers need to choose appropriate reading techniques that help the students improve their reading skills to comprehend the English text they read. This research aims to discover the techniques used to teach reading skills in senior high school classes. The techniques are explored through the research articles written by previous researchers on this topic. This study employed a systematic analysis method that identifies existing articles that are available online. The research reviewed 20 articles on the research topic, which were collected from Google Scholar. This research highlighted four teaching techniques frequently mentioned and suggested as effective in teaching reading skills. They were: Think-Pair-Share, reciprocal teaching, mind mapping, and Question-Answer Relationship (QAR). These techniques have been proven effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. These techniques are, of course, not without shortcomings. Thus, teachers need to pay attention to the situation of their classes in choosing appropriate techniques, especially in teaching reading skills. Implementing the appropriate techniques brings instruction to life while encouraging students to actively engage in class.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a prototype learning model based on self-regulated learning for students who study English at Junior High School, and find effective strategies to support teachers in adopting and adapting self-regulated learning-based learning in their English classes. The era of globalization requires mastery of English language to access global information, communicate among countries, and increase competitiveness. The 2045 Golden Indonesia Vision [5} also emphasizes the importance of developing the quality of human resources, including English language. However, data show that Indonesia English language proficiency is still low according to EF English Proficiency Index. Also, one of the main challenges is the very limited use of English language in daily life. The conditions mentioned above are challenges for the autonomous learning of high school students. Therefore, a teaching and learning model facilitating students with the ability to systematically manage their learning process is really needed to achieve their learning goals. The components of SRL include cognitive strategies, beliefs and motivation, and resource management. The self-regulated learning-based learning model is seen as the right solution to improve students' self-regulated abilities in learning English language. This learning model follows a three-phase cycle model which includes the Forethought phase, the Performance phase, and the Reflection phase. Developing the prototype of a Self-Regulated Learning-Based Learning Model for Junior High School English participants follows the ADDIE Model. This development model has 5 stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. However, there are only three stages of the ADDIE Model implemented in the research, namely Analysis, Design, and Development. Through this study, the prototype of a SRL-based Learning Model is developed. The implications of this prototype are (1) teachers becoming more aware to facilitate students’ learning English with learning strategies, and (2) students are rather more goal and strategy-oriented since they implement the SRL in order to get better achievement.

Abstract

In early 2020, the covid-19 disease spread around the world. This greatly changed the order of life of the people in the world. One of the most affected is Education, especially learning activities. Therefore, it is a challenge for teachers to make learning with an online system (Asynchronous learning) but it can still be effective to do. One of the most popular among learners is the flipped classroom. Flipped Classroom is also an alternative for teaching English to Non-English Department Students during and after the Covid-19 Pandemics. This research aims to describe how Flipped Classroom is implemented in English I Course at Geography Education Study Program in the Academic Year of 2023/2024.  Narrative Inquiry method is used as the way to collect the data from the lecturer who taught the course. Findings show that certain characteristics of Flipped Classroom have been fulfilled although there are some others which are not quite exactly as required by Flipped Classroom. Since the data were obtained from the subject only, it is recommended that future research on flipped classroom should clearly describe the activities used for both in-class and out-of-class activities obtained from observations
