Abstract

Al-Iqtishad fi Al-I'tiqad is one of Al-Ghazali's works that reflects a moderate stance in matters of belief. It addresses the existence of groups with extremes, whether leaning too far left or right, such as the Mu'tazilah who are very rational in their approach, or the textualists who reject rationality, like the Hawasyiyah. Al-Ghazali tends to be a mediator, adopting both rationality and textualism as the foundation of his thought. This article is written to illustrate Al Ghazali's methodology of argumentation and its implementation in explaining modernist beliefs, particularly regarding arguments about the essence of God, which are often debated by extremist groups. Al Ghazali's views will be compared with those of the Muhadditsin in their understanding of texts related to the essence of God. The primary data for this article is sourced from Al-Ghazali's Al-Iqtishad fi Al-I'tiqad, which is explored and elaborated upon using content analysis methods. The findings of this article explain that Al-Ghazali's methodology of argumentation is divided into three parts. In the implementation of one of his methodologies, Al-Ghazali presents two premises to produce an argumentative and rational conclusion. Thus, in his argumentation, the issue of the essence of God will be more clearly addressed in the main discussion of this article. Keywords: Al-Ghazali, Al-Iqtishad fi Al-I’tiqad, The Essence of God

Abstract

The tradition of reading and holding the Qur'an during menstruation has sparked debate among students and pesantren administrators. In hadith studies, there is a prohibition against reading and touching the mushaf for menstruating women, as mentioned in several narrations. However, in practice, many pesantren accommodate students to interact with the Qur'an through various means, such as using digital mushaf, reciting with the intention of dhikr, or relying on tafsir. This phenomenon is part of Living Hadith, where the understanding of hadith is not only textual but also contextual, adapting to the social and cultural dynamics of pesantren. This study aims to examine the extent to which pesantren provide freedom or enforce strict regulations on this matter, as well as the perspectives of administrators and ustadzah regarding female students’ practices in reading and holding the mushaf during menstruation. This research investigates the practice of reading and holding the mushaf during menstruation within the context of Living Hadith at Pesantren Sains Tebuireng. It explores how female students understand and apply the Prophet’s traditions on this issue, as well as the interaction between textual doctrines and lived religious experiences. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with an ethnographic Living Hadith methodology, data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with students and ustadzah, and literature analysis from Islamic legal sources. Findings reveal that despite textual prohibitions, practical considerations such as educational needs, memorization maintenance, and pesantren traditions shape the acceptance and practice of female students in interacting with the Qur'an during menstruation. Various fiqh interpretations also influence pesantren policies, allowing alternatives such as using digital mushaf, translated mushaf, or reciting Qur'anic verses with the intention of dhikr or memorization retention. This study contributes to Living Hadith discourse by demonstrating how Islamic traditions are dynamically negotiated within pesantren environments, balancing textual authority with contextual adaptation

Abstract

This article examines the relevance of Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic theory in understanding the hadith concerning the wife's prostration to her husband. This hadith is often considered to contain gender bias or even be misogynistic. Through Gadamer's hermeneutic approach, which emphasizes the fusion of horizons between the text and the reader's context, the article highlights the importance of an interpretation that involves historical awareness and contemporary ethical reflection. The study employs a qualitative, library-based method by analyzing hadiths from Sunan Ibn Mājah and Sunan al-Tirmidhi. The hermeneutic theory is drawn from Gadamer’s Truth and Method, along with other relevant literature. The analysis shows that the interpretation of this hadith cannot be separated from the social context in which it was spoken and that its meaning can be reinterpreted constructively within an ethical framework of gender-equitable relationships. Thus, Gadamer's hermeneutics offers a critical and contextual alternative approach in hadith studies.

Abstract

The majority of scholars agree that a hadith conflicting with the Qur'an is considered weak (dha'if). However, the application of this method has implications for the weakening of several authentic hadiths (sahih) narrated in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, as well as other hadiths with authentic chains of transmission. Using a content analysis approach, this study aims to specifically examine Al-Idlibi's theory regarding the contradiction of hadith with the Qur'an and to identify the weaknesses of this matn (content) criticism method. The findings reveal that this theory does not belong to Al-Idlibi himself; rather, he merely cited a theory practiced by many hadith scholars. Furthermore, this theory has three main weaknesses: the absence of any consensus (ijma') on rejecting an authentic hadith due to its conflict with the Qur'an, the precedent among scholars prioritizing hadith when it contradicts the Qur'an, such as in the cases of inheritance and stoning (rajam), and the inherent subjectivity in applying this method.
