Abstract

This article aims to explore the shifting of livelihood (nafqa) responsibilities from husbands to wives in the contemporary context while looking at Muslim community’s reading on relevant Qur’an verses and hadith. Wives who work as migrant workers tend to serve as the main breadwinner in providing income in a household, including those from Kediri and Tulungagung, East Java. Livelihood itself is a common topic in the Islamic law discussion, mainly about who provide for whom and its quantity criteria. Based on this problem, we portray the phenomenon and then present a reading of relevant Qur’anic verses and hadith within the community. The qualitative method was used by conducting interviews with husbands situated in that specific type of household. Data collection was also carried out by a review of relevant verses and hadith on family life followed by analytical approach using content analysis to identify how they are perceived by Muslim community. This study offers insights into Islamic family law in contemporary society, linking religious teachings to modern realities and providing a deeper understanding of this complex issue. The result shows that despite the phenomenon, the husbands still play their role as breadwinners, namely the secondary one. This stems from how they understand the rule of each family party, implying how religious teachings interplay with modern realities.

Abstract

This article examines the relevance of Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic theory in understanding the hadith concerning the wife's prostration to her husband. This hadith is often considered to contain gender bias or even be misogynistic. Through Gadamer's hermeneutic approach, which emphasizes the fusion of horizons between the text and the reader's context, the article highlights the importance of an interpretation that involves historical awareness and contemporary ethical reflection. The study employs a qualitative, library-based method by analyzing hadiths from Sunan Ibn Mājah and Sunan al-Tirmidhi. The hermeneutic theory is drawn from Gadamer’s Truth and Method, along with other relevant literature. The analysis shows that the interpretation of this hadith cannot be separated from the social context in which it was spoken and that its meaning can be reinterpreted constructively within an ethical framework of gender-equitable relationships. Thus, Gadamer's hermeneutics offers a critical and contextual alternative approach in hadith studies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of “marriage is scary,” which is increasingly prevalent among urban youth, reflects deep structural and psychological concerns about the institution of marriage. These concerns are closely linked to economic pressures, high social expectations, and interpersonal challenges shaped by personal experiences or social environments. This study aims to explore the cultural and religious roots of marriage traditions, with a particular focus on walimah al-‘urs, through historical and thematic analysis of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ hadiths. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing library research methods to systematically collect, examine, and interpret primary sources from canonical hadith collections (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim) and classical commentaries (‘Umdat al-Qari, Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari). Secondarysources include contemporary literature in psychology, sociology, and gender studies, as well as statistical data from official institutions, to contextualize the findings within modern sociopsychological realities. Data analysis follows a thematic-descriptive framework, identifying relevant hadiths that provide normative guidance on marriage celebrations. Three key hadiths were identified from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim that illustrate the Prophet’s ﷺ principles regarding walimah, emphasizing flexibility, simplicity, and modesty in its practice. The study contributes both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, it provides a nuanced understanding of how prophetic traditions can inform contemporary marriage practices. Practically, it offers a spiritual and social alternative to the modern pressures of marriage culture, particularly the tendencies toward materialism and social performance, thus fostering resilience and a balanced perspective for young Muslims navigating marital expectations
