Abstract

This study examines the Islamic educational values in the Gusjigang life philosophy inherited from Sunan Kudus and its implementation in contemporary Islamic education. Gusjigang is an acronym for Gus (having good morals), Ji (intelligent in knowledge), and Gang (economically independent), shaping individuals and societies that are civilized, knowledgeable, and economically self-sufficient.  Using a qualitative approach with a literature study method, this research analyzes various sources related to Gusjigang and Islamic education. Content analysis identifies six key values: philosophical (honesty and justice), moral (discipline and responsibility), scientific (lifelong learning), spiritual (connection with God), creative (creativity and innovation), and economic (Islamic business ethics and financial independence). The findings show that Gusjigang values are highly relevant in Islamic education and can be implemented through curriculum integration, project-based learning, as well as character and entrepreneurship education based on Islamic principles. Adapting the Gusjigang philosophy in the education system is expected to nurture Muslim generations who are morally upright, knowledgeable, and economically independent while preserving Islamic values and local culture.

Abstract

This study examines Pepali Pitu of Sunan Drajat as a philosophical teaching that embodies wisdom, social ethics, and spirituality within the framework of Sufism, and compares it conceptually with Bidayah al-Hidayah by Imam al-Ghazali. This research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach to explore the similarities and differences in the spiritual journey structure of both teachings. The findings reveal that both Pepali Pitu and Bidayah al-Hidayah emphasize the spiritual stages of human life through the concepts of takhalli, tahalli, and tajalli, focusing on self-purification, moral development, and closeness to God. The main difference lies in their approach: Sunan Drajat conveys Sufi values through local Javanese cultural symbols, while al-Ghazali formulates them systematically within the classical Islamic scholarly tradition. These findings highlight that Sufism remains relevant as a moral and spiritual guide that is adaptable to both local and universal contexts. This study is limited by its conceptual scope and does not empirically examine how these values are practiced in contemporary Muslim communities. Therefore, future research is recommended to investigate the practical implementation of Pepali Pitu and Bidayah al-Hidayah, especially in character education and cultural-based Islamic propagation.

Abstract

Sunan Gresik, or Shaikh Maulana Malik Ibrahim, is one of the central figures in the history of the spread of Islam in Java, especially in the context of Islamic education. This research aims to explore Sunan Gresik's contribution to the development of Islamic education, as well as its impact on the character and intellectual formation of Javanese society. Using a qualitative approach with library study methods, this research analyzes various sources, including historical texts, academic literature, and related documents, to formulate Sunan Gresik's role as an educator and innovator in the world of Islamic education. The research results show that Sunan Gresik not only focuses on spreading Islamic teachings, but also realizes the importance of education as a means of advancing society. He founded the Islamic boarding school as an educational institution which became a center for teaching religious knowledge and instilling moral values. The teaching method used by Sunan Gresik emphasizes the integration of Islamic teachings with local wisdom, making it easier for people to understand and practice religious teachings. The impact of this educational reform was seen in the growth of an educated and ethical Muslim community, which later became the foundation for the development of Islam in Java.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis tembang yang dikaitkan dengan Sunan Bonang, menganalisis makna serta nilai-nilai Islam yang terkandung di dalamnya, mengeksplorasi pesan moral dan spiritual yang disampaikan, serta mengkaji metode penyampaian ajaran Islam melalui tembang tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi pustaka dan analisis teks. Data diperoleh dari berbagai sumber literatur, manuskrip kuno, serta kajian terdahulu mengenai tembang Sunan Bonang. Teknik analisis data melibatkan interpretasi lirik tembang, pemetaan nilai-nilai Islam yang terkandung, serta evaluasi efektivitasnya dalam konteks pembelajaran Islam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tembang Sunan Bonang mengandung ajaran tauhid, akhlak mulia, serta nilai-nilai spiritual yang mendalam. Pesan moral dalam tembang ini meliputi ajakan untuk selalu mendekatkan diri kepada Allah, hidup dengan kesederhanaan, serta menjunjung tinggi nilai-nilai persaudaraan dan kejujuran. Metode penyampaian ajaran Islam melalui tembang dilakukan dengan pendekatan yang lembut dan estetis, sehingga lebih mudah diterima oleh masyarakat pada masanya. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa tembang Sunan Bonang memiliki nilai edukatif yang tinggi dan dapat menjadi media pembelajaran yang relevan dalam pendidikan Islam modern. Integrasi nilai budaya dan seni dalam metode dakwah Islam terbukti.

Abstract

Sahnun’s religious-conservative thought, as articulated by a prominent ninth-century Maliki jurist, made a significant contribution to preserving Islamic orthodoxy through his monumental work al-Mudawwanah al-Kubrā. This intellectual orientation emphasizes strong adherence to authoritative religious texts, the authority of the ulama, and the strict implementation of Islamic legal practices. Meanwhile, pesantren in Indonesia are widely recognized as traditional Islamic educational institutions that prioritize discipline, obedience to scholarly authority, and the embedding religious character. The intersection between Sahnun’s conservatism and the pesantren tradition therefore warrants closer scholarly examination. The central research question of this study concerns how Sahnun’s religious-conservative thought is understood and the extent to which it is relevant to the pesantren educational system. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach following the PRISMA guidelines. Data were drawn from 21 Scopus-indexed journal articles published between 2015 and 2025. The selection process involved identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and the synthesis of relevant findings. The results indicate that key elements of Sahnun’s religious conservatism, such as textual authority, fiqh discipline, and a firm commitment to preserving tradition, exhibit strong resonance with contemporary pesantren education. This study affirms that Sahnun’s conservatism not only played a crucial role in the historical development of Islamic law but also provides a normative and epistemological foundation for the continuity of pesantren as Islamic educational institutions in the contemporary era.
