Abstract

This study investigates the use of impoliteness in Twitter responses to the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou by Tottenham Hotspur, despite his recent success in ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought. Using Culpeper’s Impoliteness Theory, 100 reply tweets to the @SpursOfficial announcement were analysed to identify the strategies fans used to express discontent. The data were collected directly from Twitter shortly after the announcement, using purposive sampling. Each tweet was manually coded according to Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies and analysed qualitatively to explore its pragmatic implications. The findings show that bald on-record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, and sarcasm/mock politeness were the most frequently employed strategies. Impoliteness in this context serves both expressive and social functions, allowing fans to signal moral outrage, reject perceived injustice, and reassert their connection to the club. The study highlights the complex role of impoliteness in digital football discourse and its function as a performative act in moments of collective discontent.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of the "Simon Says" game in improving students' listening skills, specifically focusing on their auditory comprehension abilities. Employing a pre-experimental design with pretest and posttest, the research involved first-year students at SMP Negeri 1 Tirawuta. Data were collected using listening tests administered before and after implementing the "Simon Says" game as a teaching intervention over eight meetings. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in students' listening skills. The mean score increased from 6.43 to 7.93 for comprehension of spoken statements and from 3.8 to 6.5 for comprehension of dialogues. Statistical analysis using a t-test confirmed the significance of these improvements (t-test values of 5.884 and 6.825 for spoken statements and dialogues, respectively, both exceeding the t-tabel value of 2.045 at df=29 and p<0.05). These findings indicated that the "Simon Says" game is an effective gamification strategy for enhancing students' auditory skills in English language learning, making the learning process more engaging and less stressful. It is recommended that English teachers incorporate this game into their listening lessons.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the correlation between corrective feedback, students' motivation, students’ speaking performance, and how they interplay with each other. The researcher used a mixed-method, a qualitative and quantitative design. The sample of this study was 34 third grade students of SMAN 1 Tirawuta. In collecting data, questionnaires, observation, and interviews were used. The findings showed that (1)there is a significant correlation between corrective feedback and students’ speaking performance, indicated by sig 2-tailed 0.005. (2) There is a significant correlation between students’ motivation and students’ speaking performance, indicated by sig 2-Tailed 0.003. (3) There is also a significant correlation between corrective feedback and students’ motivation and students’ speaking performance simultaneously, indicated by sig 2-tailed 0.003. The correlation between corrective feedback, students’ motivation, and students’ speaking performance were in the gravity of moderate level, R 0.559, and the R square was 0.313. This implies that 31.3 % variation of students’ speaking performance can be predicted through corrective feedback and students’ motivation, while 68.7% can be predicted through other factors. Last but not least, (4) Teacher’s feedback motivated students through their errors in improving their speaking performance

Abstract

This study investigates the structural patterns of Indonesian-English code-switching in the Endgame podcast featuring host Gita Wirjawan and guest Baskara Putra. Code-switching, long observed in bilingual communities, is increasingly salient in digital media where it shapes public discourse and identity. The objective of this study is to identify the types, distribution, and grammatical integration of code-switching in a semi-formal podcast setting. Using a qualitative descriptive design with corpus-based elements, a purposive sample of 100 utterances containing switches from the Endgame video podcast was transcribed and analyzed. Guided by Poplack’s typology and Myers-Scotton’s Matrix Language Frame model, the results show that intra-sentential switching dominates, with English insertions clustering around abstract or globalized topics such as mental health and dystopia. English elements were consistently embedded into Indonesian grammar, sometimes morphologically adapted. These findings demonstrate that podcast code-switching is both structurally systematic and symbolically meaningful, highlighting its role in indexing cosmopolitan identities in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to map the research landscape of English language learning in primary schools through a bibliometric analysis. Data were collected from scientific publications spanning 2000 to 2024 and analyzed using VOSviewer. The findings reveal a marked increase in publications, particularly from 2020 onward, peaking in 2022. Language, Culture and Curriculum emerged as one of the most influential journals, while Khon Kaen University was identified as the most prolific contributing institution. Among individual contributors, Halbach A was the most productive author, whereas Al-Issa AS received the highest number of global citations, indicating substantial scholarly influence. Cluster analysis revealed seven major thematic areas, encompassing student and teacher roles, curriculum development, and teacher professionalism. Overlay visualization further highlighted emerging research themes, such as multimodality, gamification, and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), pointing to future directions in the field. These findings carry significant implications for curriculum design, teacher education, and the development of innovative instructional strategies. Notwithstanding its contributions, this study is limited by the scope of data and analytical methods employed. Future research is recommended to adopt mixed-methods approaches and incorporate multilingual data to achieve a more comprehensive mapping.
