Abstract

Concrete Form of Reading-Writing Method Based on Mother Tongue (Case Study in Laboya Language) ABSTRAKArtikel ini adalah sebuah refleksi pengalaman penulis selama menjadi fasilitator pendidikan alternatif di Kampung Adat Sodan, Sumba Barat. Kata kunci: materi ajar, baca tulis, bahasa laboyaABSTRACTThis article reflects authors experience as alternative education facilitators in Kampung Adat Sodan, Sumba Barat. The authors observed that linguistic richness in Sumba Barat does not guarantee the use of instruction language and teaching materials in mother tongue, especially Laboya language. Formal school tends to use foreign teaching materials, especially in the early levels of primary school. This phenomenon has led to the high illiteracy rate in Sumba Barat. Another factor is cultural violence, as in the necessity to leave the Marapu identity, as a local belief, to enroll in formal school. This reflection encouraged the authors to compose Laboyan-based reading and writing method. Qualitative data was obtained through ethnographic interview and observation-application in praxis. The obtained data in the form of Laboya lexicons were inputted to FieldWorks, a documentation software for linguistic data and culture. The data was classified based on syllabic structure types. The study found 11 syllabic structures.Keyword: teaching materials, reading and writing, laboya language

Abstract

This research aims to identify obstacles and solutions in the application of educational technology through literature review. Technology has great potential in improving the quality of learning, but its application in the field still faces various obstacles. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method. The sources used include academic journals, scientific articles, government reports, and publications from relevant national and international educational institutions. The data obtained is analyzed thematically by identifying the main categories that emerge from the literature. This literature review reveals four main obstacles in the application of educational technology, namely the lack of adequate infrastructure, limited technological competence among educators, resistance to change, and lack of policy support from the government and educational institutions. To overcome these obstacles, several solutions are recommended, including increasing equitable access to technology infrastructure, providing sustainable technology training for educators, implementing an adaptive approach in the technology integration process, and strengthening policies that support technology adoption in education

Abstract

Social media have transcended their role as mere communication tools, evolving into dynamic spaces where intricate sociolinguistic behaviors are reflected. Lenhart (2020) identified platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and X becoming integral to daily communication and identity expression. It has facilitated cultural exchange and created opportunities for multilingual communication. This study examines the language strategies employed by Indonesian tour guides on social media, focusing on the phenomenon of code-switching and its functions proposed by Hoffman's (1991). The findings found there were three types of code switching used, such as intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag switching. The most type of code switching uttered by the guide is intra-sentential switching. The function is to incorporating local terms and switching languages, they add cultural nuance, emphasize key points, engage the audience, and vividly convey specific behaviors.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance the competence of tutors in non-formal educational institutions in implementing the Literature-Based Learning (LBL) approach in teaching. The two-day training was conducted at Bimbel Merauke Cerdas, South Papua, involving 12 participating tutors. The training employed a combination of conceptual material delivery and hands-on practice, designed to equip participants with an understanding of the theoretical foundations of LBL, its connection to Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, and Reader-Response theory. The results showed a significant increase in average scores: cognitive (from 3.06 to 4.00), practical skills (from 2.98 to 3.79), and perception (from 3.07 to 3.98). These findings indicate the training's success in enhancing conceptual understanding, instructional design skills, and participants’ positive attitudes toward LBL implementation. In conclusion, the training effectively strengthened the tutors’ theoretical knowledge, practical competencies, and reflective abilities in adopting literature as an integral part of the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of impoliteness in Twitter responses to the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou by Tottenham Hotspur, despite his recent success in ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought. Using Culpeper’s Impoliteness Theory, 100 reply tweets to the @SpursOfficial announcement were analysed to identify the strategies fans used to express discontent. The data were collected directly from Twitter shortly after the announcement, using purposive sampling. Each tweet was manually coded according to Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies and analysed qualitatively to explore its pragmatic implications. The findings show that bald on-record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, and sarcasm/mock politeness were the most frequently employed strategies. Impoliteness in this context serves both expressive and social functions, allowing fans to signal moral outrage, reject perceived injustice, and reassert their connection to the club. The study highlights the complex role of impoliteness in digital football discourse and its function as a performative act in moments of collective discontent.

Abstract

This study investigates the structural patterns of Indonesian-English code-switching in the Endgame podcast featuring host Gita Wirjawan and guest Baskara Putra. Code-switching, long observed in bilingual communities, is increasingly salient in digital media where it shapes public discourse and identity. The objective of this study is to identify the types, distribution, and grammatical integration of code-switching in a semi-formal podcast setting. Using a qualitative descriptive design with corpus-based elements, a purposive sample of 100 utterances containing switches from the Endgame video podcast was transcribed and analyzed. Guided by Poplack’s typology and Myers-Scotton’s Matrix Language Frame model, the results show that intra-sentential switching dominates, with English insertions clustering around abstract or globalized topics such as mental health and dystopia. English elements were consistently embedded into Indonesian grammar, sometimes morphologically adapted. These findings demonstrate that podcast code-switching is both structurally systematic and symbolically meaningful, highlighting its role in indexing cosmopolitan identities in contemporary Indonesia.
