Abstract

Abstract

Porang tuber (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) is a potential natural resource that can be developed as an active ingredient in cosmetic preparations, particularly liquid soap. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate liquid soap containing porang tuber extract and to determine its physical quality characteristics. The tubers were extracted by maceration using 70% ethanol. Prior to extraction, simplicia characterization was performed, including determination of moisture content, water-soluble extractive, ethanol-soluble extractive, total ash, and acid-insoluble ash. Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify secondary metabolites. The extract was formulated into liquid soap preparations with concentrations of 3%, 5%, and 8%. The evaluation included organoleptic tests, pH measurement, foam height test, irritation test, and hedonic test. The results of simplicia characterization showed that all parameters met the requirements of the Herbal Pharmacopeia. Phytochemical screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids. The formulated liquid soaps showed acceptable physical characteristics, pH values within the Indonesian National Standard range (8–11), adequate foam formation, and no skin irritation. Hedonic testing demonstrated that all formulations were acceptable to panelists. It can be concluded that porang tuber extract has potential as a natural active ingredient in liquid soap formulations.

Abstract

This research relies on the analysis of fat content from the food replacement product (x) and lotus root (nelumbo nucifera) fermentation by utilizing the Soxhlet method. The experiment was conducted by extraction using n-hexane solvent for six hours. The fat content was determined based on the difference in weight after extraction. The findings showed that the fat content in the food replacement product (x) reached 63.60%, while in the lotus root fermentation it was 89.19%. These high numbers are influenced by the composition of the ingredients used, the effectiveness of nonpolar solvents, as well as changes in the matrix structure due to fermentation which increases lipid accessibility. The fermentation process, which lasted for 22 days, enhances enzymatic effectiveness that damages cell walls, thereby facilitating the extraction of lipophilic compounds. The results of this study indicate that fermentation can increase the measurement of fat in plant-based food materials, but the figures obtained reflect the fat that was successfully extracted, not pure fat. According to regulations in Indonesia, there is not yet a maximum limit for fat content in foods for special nutritional needs.

Abstract

Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) as a chronic pathology highly depends on the synergy between pharmacological interventions and lifestyle modifications. Patient health literacy plays a crucial role in determining the effectiveness of glycemic control and the prevention of long-term complications. This research aims to map the patient knowledge profile while identifying the determinant factors influencing it at Royal Prima Hospital, Medan. Utilizing a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach, this study involved 100 respondents recruited through an accidental sampling technique. The research instrument employed an adapted version of the DKQ-24 questionnaire. Univariate analysis results confirmed that the majority of respondents (79%) possessed adequate understanding regarding their treatment regimen. Based on the Chi-Square test, a significant correlation was found in the gender variable ($p = 0.044$), while other demographic and clinical variables showed no meaningful association. Furthermore, binary logistic regression testing demonstrated a lack of simultaneous influence from all independent variables on the level of patient knowledge.

Abstract

Breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis L.) area plant with various health benefits due to their natural chemical compounds, one of which acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds that can halt the oxidation process by donating electrons, there by protecting normal cells, fats, and proteins from damage caused by free radicals. The concentration of an antioxidant that causes a 50% reduction in DPPH activity is referred to as the IC50.  The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extract from breadfruit leaves in combating oxidation using the DPPH method. The results showed an IC50 value of 6.66 ppm for the extract, indicating very strong antioxidant activity, although it was more effective compared to vitamin C, which served as a positive control with an IC50 value of 1.15 ppm. This difference in effectiveness is influenced by the amount of phenolic compounds present and the potential pro-oxidant effects at higher concentrations. In summary, breadfruit leaves have high potential as asource of natural antioxidants and can be used to develop pharmaceutical products to treat degenerative diseases.

Abstract

Microencapsulation is a technology used to protect active ingredients from environmental influences and enhance their stability. This study aimed to evaluate the formulation of microencapsulated ethanol extract of mindi leaves (Melia azedarach L.), which possesses pharmacological activities as an antioxidant, antibacterial, and antidiabetic agent. The extraction of mindi leaves was performed using the maceration method with 80% ethanol, yielding a 10.4% extract. Microencapsulation was prepared using sodium alginate and chitosan as coating materials, with three different extract concentrations (0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75%). Formulation evaluation included moisture content testing, stability testing using cycling test, and floating test on rat gastric mucosa. The results showed that moisture content ranged from 0.37% to 0.63%, with the 0.75% formulation having the lowest moisture content (0.37%). Stability testing over six cycles demonstrated that all formulations remained stable without significant changes in color, texture, and shape. The floating test showed a lag time of less than 2 minutes for all formulations with floating time ranging from 3 to 6 hours, where the 0.25% concentration exhibited the longest floating time (6 hours). It can be concluded that microencapsulation technology successfully produced mindi leaf ethanol extract preparations with stable characteristics, low moisture content, and good floating capability, making it potential as an oral drug delivery system.

Abstract

Formulation and Antibacterial Action Assessment of Celery Leaf Extract Gel (Apium graveolens L. ) Against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa Bacteria Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is a plant recognized for its ability to fight bacteria because of substances like flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which offer promising natural antibacterial alternatives. This study aimed to create a gel from celery leaf extract and test its antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The celery leaves were extracted using the maceration method with 96% ethanol, achieving a yield of 17.25%. Four distinct gel formulations were produced with varying levels of extract: 0% (F0), 5% (F1), 10% (F2), and 15% (F3), utilizing HPMC as the gel base. Evaluations of the physical properties, which included sensory testing, uniformity, pH, spreadability, and viscosity, showed that all formulations met the quality criteria for gel products. The pH values ranged from 6. 63 to 6. 81, the spreadability was recorded between 5-6 cm, and the viscosity varied from 15,567 to 18,325 cPs. The antibacterial effectiveness test on Staphylococcus aureus, conducted through the disc diffusion method, revealed inhibition zones of 9.2 mm (moderate), 10.3 mm (moderate), and 11.48 mm (strong) at concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10%, respectively. These results indicate that the gel made from celery leaf extract shows antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, with the highest efficacy observed at a concentration of 10%.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia, characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, is a key clinical feature of diabetes mellitus. In recent years, medicinal plants have gained attention as alternative therapies due to their relatively minimal side effects. This study aimed to explore the potential of acombined ethanol extract of bay leaf (Syzgium polyanthum) and cepcepan leaf (castanopsis costata) in lowering blood flucose leveles in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with alloxan. The extraction process was carried out using the maceration methos with 96% ethanol. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of active compounds such as flavonoids, alkoloids, tannins, saponins, and steroid. The rats were divided into six groups: a normal group. A negative control group (alloxan only), a positive control group (glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kgBB), and three treatment groups receiving the combined extract at doses of 120 mg/kgBW, 250mg/kgBW, and 500mg/kgBW. Blood glucose levels were monitored from day 0 to day 15. ANOVA analysis showed a reduction in glucose levels among the treatment groups, althought the results were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). nevertheless, a consistent downward trend was observed, particularyl in the group receiving 250mg/kgBW. These findings suggest that the ethanol extract combination of bay and cepcepan leaves holds promise as an antihyperlycemic agent. However, frurther research is necessary to confirm its efficacy and fully understand its mechanism of action.
