Abstract

Innovation in traditional arts often triggers polemics between conservative and progressive values. This study offers a dialectical model of innovation-response in traditional arts by using Tembang Sunda Cianjuran as a case study to integrate Lewis A. Coser’s functional conflict theory. Employing a qualitative methodology that combines case study and autoethnography, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis. This multi-method approach allowed for a comprehensive understanding of both the artistic negotiation process and the underlying community dynamics. The research found that (1) the innovation of "Nyiar Luang Tina Cianjuran" successfully addressed contemporary social issues without eliminating core aesthetic rules such as dongkari, laras (tuning), wanda (style), song, and lyrics; (2) thematic modernisation and multimedia integration significantly enhance the appeal to the younger generation; and (3) the conflict between conservatism and progressivism, when managed effectively, can foster internal cohesion and create harmony within traditional arts. This research concludes that responsible innovation can enrich cultural relevance without compromising traditional values.

Abstract

Abstract

This study develops a conceptual framework to define a distinguished panembang (vocalist) in Tembang Sunda Cianjuran based on a case study of the PTSC DAMAS competition. Employing a qualitative research design, the study integrates triangulation methods data, techniques, and sources to enhance validity. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 12 key informants (including judges, panembang, and cultural experts), field observations, and document analysis. The analytical framework is based on A.A.M. Djelantik's aesthetic theory and uses Miles and Huberman's interactive model for data analysis. The study identifies five core parameters: Bener (accuracy), Merenah (proportionality), Genah (melodiousness), Alus (artistic refinement), and Mulus (flawless integration), each with context-specific indicators. These findings offer a culturally grounded yet methodologically rigorous model for evaluating performance quality in traditional Sundanese vocal arts. The proposed parameters offer a foundational step toward developing a more objective, transparent, and accountable judging system.

Abstract

This study investiges the strategies for acquiring vocal competence in tembang sunda cianjuran through a comparative approach to two prominent panembang: Yus Wiradiredja and Neneng Dinar. Addressing the limited research that explores the learning trajectories of panembang in depth, this study employs Brinner’s theoretical framework on the stages of acquiring musical competence as the primary analytical tool. The findings indicate that while Yus followed an ideal learning path aligned with Brinner’s stages—establishing himself as a multitalented panembang with exceptional and wide-ranging musical sensitivity—Neneng also attained a high level of competence through perseverance and strong personal commitment. These results highlight the vital role of experience and consistency in shaping musical competence. The study recommends the development of panembang training models grounded in integrated technical, cultural, and reflective approaches.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of digital literacy in revitalizing the Perang Tomat (Tomato War) tradition in Cikareumbi Village during the post-pandemic period. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology, engaging artists, youth, and community elders in training on digital content related to cultural branding and creative media production. Participants were trained to create cultural content with smartphones, manage social media accounts, and reinterpret digital platforms as instruments for cultural representation. Empirical evidence indicates notable enhancements in the digital capacity of the community. The Instagram insights for the newly established “Mekar Budaya Lembang” account indicate 3,299 views and 128 interactions over the course of one month, with 61.3% of viewers classified as non-followers. Furthermore, 85% of participants demonstrated proficiency in content creation, 78% acquired skills for independent media management, and 60% grasped the principles of cultural branding. The findings indicate that digital literacy enables individuals to narrate stories within their communities and enhances the visibility of Perang Tomat beyond its local context. The study concludes that digital literacy serves as both a technical skill and a cultural strategy, enhancing community agency and promoting cultural sustainability. This model of community-based digital empowerment provides a replicable framework for the promotion of intangible heritage in digitally mediated contexts.
