Abstract

Sarcasm is often used in movies to create humor, but it can also show deeper emotions like anger, disappointment, or hidden criticism. In the movie Avengers: Endgame, sarcasm is used by many characters to express their feelings and relationships in a funny but meaningful way. This research aims to analyze how sarcasm is used in the movie and to identify which types of sarcasm appear the most. The researcher used Elisabeth Camp’s theory, which divides sarcasm into four types: propositional, lexical, like prefixed, and illocutionary sarcasm. The method used is descriptive qualitative, by watching the movie, collecting sarcastic dialogues, and analyzing them based on the theory. The result shows that propositional sarcasm is the most used (43%), followed by lexical sarcasm (36%), illocutionary sarcasm (14%), and like-prefixed sarcasm (7%). From these findings, it can be concluded that sarcasm in Avengers: Endgame is not only for jokes but also helps to express the characters’ emotions, conflicts, and closeness, making the dialogue more interesting and meaningful for the audience.

Abstract

This study explores the role of anecdotal humor in Indonesian stand-up comedy, with a focus on the YouTube talk show Lapor Pak. Using qualitative analysis, the research examines how comedians employ relatable anecdotes to address contemporary social issues, crafting engaging and humorous stories that connect with viewers. The study highlights the key elements of anecdotal text including Abstract, Orientation, Crisis, Reaction, and Coda, and illustrates how these components are applied in Lapor Pak to convey messages and critique societal norms. The findings underscore the importance of stand-up comedy as a tool for social commentary and cultural reflection, showcasing the comedians' ability to create witty reactions that propel the comedic narrative. This research enhances the understanding of stand-up comedy as a powerful medium for both education and social critique in Indonesian culture

Abstract

This study examines ideological polarization in online news comment sections through a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. In recent years, digital platforms have increasingly become sites of discursive contestation where ideological divisions are intensified rather than mitigated. Using a qualitative interpretive design, this study analyzes approximately 300 user comments on political news articles collected through purposive sampling. The analysis applies van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model, focusing on textual structures, social cognition, and social context. The findings reveal three dominant patterns: (1) the construction of “us versus them” dichotomies through evaluative and exclusionary language, (2) the use of emotional and stigmatizing discourse as a mechanism of ideological legitimation, and (3) the recursive reproduction of polarization through interactive comment chains. Drawing on recent studies in digital communication and polarization, the findings demonstrate that online language operates as a form of symbolic power that reinforces group boundaries and social fragmentation. This study contributes to contemporary digital discourse research by emphasizing the importance of critical digital literacy and micro-level discursive analysis in understanding ideological polarization.
