Abstract

This research was intended to develop speaking activities in students’ textbook for senior high school. This study aims to develop speaking materials based on Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). Based on the preliminary research, there was limited speaking activities in that textbook that can minimize the students to speak. The writers chose one topic to be developed entitled complimenting and showing care in the 2nd chapter. The reason of choosing that topic is that there are limited activities for speaking section. There are limited instructions used for students to express their idea orally. As we know that as a senior high school student, he or she has to be able to speak English orally. But if in the textbook does not provide enough instruction especially in speaking, it is useless. So the material should be developed. The writers is interested to develop that material in order to give the students opportunities to practice speaking orally based on their real life in learning English especially in speaking. Based on the result from previous findings, the writers expects that by giving some activities related to speaking, the students are able to express their idea orally. Because in that textbook limited of speaking activities that can minimize the students to speak, so the writers provided some instructional skill that can be useful for the students.

Abstract

The development of mobile technology provides new opportunities for independent English learning through digital applications. This community service research aims to implement training on the use of Duolingo and HelloTalk English applications at Leona High School, Lotas Village, Rinhat District. The training was conducted in two weeks, combining lecture methods, demonstrations, direct practice, group discussions, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests. The results showed an increase in the average score from 55 to 78 (p < 0.001), with 72% of participants consistently studying daily during the training. In addition to improving basic English skills (vocabulary, reading comprehension, and sentence structure), the training also succeeded in building independent learning habits and digital literacy. Obstacles emerged, especially internet access and limited premium features on some applications. Advanced programs (advanced grammar & speaking), mentoring, and provision of digital infrastructure support are recommended

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the meanings contained in the cultural utterance Hase Hawaka among the people of Nanaet Village, Nanaet Duabesi District, Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Hase Hawaka is a traditional expression that has been passed down from generation to generation, embodying deep social, moral, and spiritual values within the community. The study employs a qualitative approach using structural theory to reveal the implicit meanings embedded in this traditional discourse. Data were collected through observation and interview methods, supported by note-taking and recording techniques to obtain authentic data from native speakers. The results show that Hase Hawaka serves not only as a means of traditional communication but also as a medium for cultural education that conveys values of respect, unity, and social responsibility. Furthermore, the meanings contained within Hase Hawaka reflect the community’s worldview about the balance between humans, nature, and the Creator. Therefore, Hase Hawaka plays an important role in preserving cultural identity and strengthening the social cohesion of the Nanaet community.

Abstract

Kegiatan “Puisi dari Timur: Revitalisasi Sastra Lisan melalui Pojok Baca Budaya dan Ekspresi Sastra dalam Mempertahankan Bahasa Lokal di Daerah 3T” bertujuan untuk melestarikan sastra lisan dan bahasa lokal, serta memperkuat identitas budaya masyarakat di daerah 3T khususnya di Desa Lotas. Tujuan utama dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk menghidupkan kembali dan mengembangkan sastra lisan melalui kegiatan interaktif yang melibatkan masyarakat dalam membaca, menciptakan, serta mengekspresikan karya sastra berbasis bahasa daerah. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini mencakup beberapa pendekatan, yaitu: (1) penyelenggaraan Pojok Baca Budaya, yang menyediakan ruang bagi masyarakat untuk membaca dan berdiskusi tentang karya sastra lokal, (2) pelatihan menulis dan kompetisi sastra, yang mendorong partisipasi generasi muda dalam menciptakan karya sastra lokal, dan (3) pementasan sastra lisan dalam bentuk pentas puisi dan cerita pendek untuk memperkenalkan serta mengekspresikan kekayaan budaya lokal. Seluruh kegiatan didokumentasikan dalam bentuk rekaman audio, video, serta antologi sastra yang diterbitkan untuk mendukung pelestarian jangka panjang. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan peningkatan minat masyarakat, terutama generasi muda dan lansia, dalam pelestarian bahasa dan sastra lokal. Lebih dari 100 peserta aktif terlibat dalam berbagai sesi, dan sebanyak 30 karya sastra lokal berhasil diproduksi selama kompetisi. Pementasan sastra lisan mendapat sambutan positif, memperlihatkan bahwa masyarakat tidak hanya tertarik untuk mendalami sastra lokal, tetapi juga bersemangat untuk mengekspresikan dan menyebarkan warisan budaya mereka. Dokumentasi dan publikasi karya sastra yang dihasilkan juga berfungsi sebagai sarana edukasi dan pelestarian budaya lokal di masa depan. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini berhasil memberikan kontribusi signifikan dalam melestarikan sastra lisan dan bahasa lokal di daerah 3T, meskipun tantangan seperti keterbatasan infrastruktur masih menjadi kendala. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan kolaborasi berkelanjutan antara pemerintah, lembaga budaya, dan masyarakat untuk memastikan keberlanjutan program ini dan memperluas dampaknya.
