Abstract This study aims to identify and analyze the forms of code-switching and code-mixing in the dialogues of characters in the series Bayt Thahir, as well as to explore the underlying factors behind these phenomena. Using a sociolinguistic approach and Dell Hymes' SPEAKING model, the research examines how code-switching and code-mixing practices reflect social dynamics, identity, and the linguistic realities of globalized urban Arab societies. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, with data drawn from the dialogues in six episodes of Bayt Thahir, which premiered on Netflix on September 6, 2023. The findings reveal 9 instances: 4 cases of external code-switching and 5 cases of external code-mixing, encompassing words, phrases, clauses, and idioms. These phenomena indicate that the use of English in the dialogues serves as a marker of the characters’ social identity and a communication style that is modern, urban, and global. This research contributes to the field of sociolinguistics, particularly in understanding language shifts in modern Arabic influenced by language contact.

Abstract

This study analyzes the system of tense and aspect in verbs within the Arabic short story Wajhul Haqiqah by Taufiq Al-Hakim. The aim is to demonstrate that Arabic verbs not only function as actions but also serve as markers of temporality and aspectuality through their diverse patterns. These varying patterns convey different meanings of time and aspect. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research examines the object as it is and presents it in the form of an explanation in the report. Data collection techniques include listening and note-taking. The findings indicate that the short story predominantly utilizes verbs in the past tense with a perfective aspect, indicating actions completed in the past. Additionally, there are present tense verbs that show imperfective aspects, especially when preceded by past tense verbs within the same sentence structure. The study confirms that in Arabic, temporality and aspectuality are determined not only by the form of the verb but also by the particles that accompany it. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the tense and aspect system in Arabic literature.

Abstract

This study analyzes the verbal and nonverbal structures in McDonald's Arabic advertisement “ماك أربيا من ماكدونالدز” using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Through a descriptive analytical method with a qualitative approach, the researcher identifies paralinguistic elements to reveal McDonald's cultural adaptation strategies in the Arab market. The results of the study indicate that McDonald's implements a localization strategy through the use of standard Arabic combined with local dialects, cultural symbols such as traditional clothing, and Arab societal values. At the denotative level, the verbal structure includes local culinary terms and Arabic slogans, while the nonverbal structure depicts a happy family togetherness in an Arab environmental setting. At the connotative level, the advertisement aligns global modernity with local traditionalism, creating the perception that foreign products can integrate with Arab cultural identity without threatening local values. These findings contribute to the understanding of cross-cultural communication in global advertising and demonstrate how semiotics can reveal cultural adaptation strategies in contemporary advertising media.
