Abstract

This study analyzes land cover changes in BSD City from 2002 to 2023 using the Semi-Unsupervised Threshold-Based and Jenks Optimization Classification (SUT-JOC) method. Five land cover types were mapped for 2002, 2013, and 2023: built-up area, bare soil, vegetated area, sparsely vegetated area, and water bodies. The results show significant urban expansion from 2002 to 2023, with built-up areas increasing from 2,202 hectares to 4,498 hectares. Land transitions followed a clear pattern, starting from vegetated areas to bare soil, then to built-up land, with spatial development shifting from east to west. Classification accuracy ranged from 88% in 2002 to 96% in 2023, with Kappa values approaching 0.95. The integration of NDVI, MNDWI, and NDBI with rule-based classification reduced manual intervention and improved reliability. These findings highlight the dynamics of peri-urban growth, environmental impacts such as urban heat island effects, and offer insights for sustainable urban planning. SUT-JOC provides a scalable and interpretable framework for multi-temporal urban land monitoring.

Abstract

The strategic importance of national defense is closely related to natural resources, strategic material reserves, particularly Rare Earth Elements (REE), and the national defense industry, which is crucial for achieving defense independence. However, the exploration of REE in Indonesia has not been optimally conducted despite its vast geological potential. This research focused on mapping the distribution of REE in the Sabang Waters by applying geomarine exploration methods supported by seismic data analysis and sediment sampling. The analysis utilized seismic facies interpretation within a quantitative framework. Findings revealed a spatial association between REE distribution and geological structures influenced by volcanic activity, particularly fumaroles. These geological features potentially indicate new REE-bearing zones in shallow marine environments. This association is proposed as a new approach to REE exploration in marine tectonic settings. The research highlights the relevance of integrating remote sensing and geological data in mapping strategic minerals to support defense industry resilience.

Abstract

Abstract

Springs are natural water sources that play an important role in meeting community needs; however, their quality must be considered to ensure safe utilization. This study aims to evaluate and compare the water quality of Mudal and Sendang Beji Springs in Girijati Village, Purwosari Subdistrict, Gunungkidul Regency, based on basic physical and chemical parameters in relation to their local uses. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method with comparative analysis, in which water samples were collected on May 13–14, 2025, and analyzed using physical parameters (temperature, TDS, taste, odor) and chemical parameter (pH). The results were then compared with the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 32 of 2017 concerning hygiene, sanitation, and public bathing standards. Findings indicate that Mudal Spring has an average temperature of 27.83 °C, TDS of 425.67 mg/l, pH of 6.78, is odorless, and has a fresh taste. Meanwhile, Sendang Beji Spring shows a pH of 6.67 with similar physical characteristics. All measured parameters meet the quality standards for hygiene, sanitation, and public bathing purposes. It can be concluded that both springs are suitable for daily community needs such as drinking, bathing, washing, and agricultural irrigation in accordance with their current utilization.
