Abstract

This study investigates the strategic utilization of Ibda’ Magazine as an innovative instructional medium to enhance Arabic reading skills (maharah qirā’ah) among students in a pesantren-based educational environment. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah and involved 120 senior secondary students across four intact classes. Ibda’ Magazine (Edition 3) was integrated into the curriculum through structured strategies such as pre-reading prediction, guided reading, mnemonic reinforcement, post-reading reflection, and Jigsaw collaboration. Quantitative data revealed significant gains across three reading domains: vocabulary retention (from 63.5 to 83.2), inferential comprehension (from 60.1 to 75.4), and identification of main ideas (from 63.2 to 77.9), with a mean increase from 62.3 to 78.9 (p < 0.001). Qualitative findings from interviews and reflections showed enhanced student motivation, contextual understanding, and ownership of learning. The study concludes that Ibda’ Magazine promotes both reading proficiency and learner identity, serving as an authentic, culturally responsive medium in Arabic language pedagogy.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of interactive learning programs in enhancing Arabic language proficiency among intermediate-level students at Pondok Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah, Indonesia. This study employed a mixed-methods design, integrating both descriptive statistics and thematic analysis to provide comprehensive insights. Grounded in constructivist pedagogy and employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative data from pre- and post-test assessments with qualitative insights derived from classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student surveys. Interactive strategies—including role-plays, peer collaboration, muhawarah simulations, and gamified digital tools—were implemented to foster active engagement and contextual language use. Quantitative findings revealed statistically significant improvements across all language domains, with the most substantial gains observed in speaking fluency (+22.4 points) and reading comprehension (+20.4 points). Qualitative data further illustrated a marked shift in student behavior, from passive reception to confident participation, as well as reductions in language anxiety and heightened motivation. The use of digital media enhanced learner autonomy and vocabulary retention, while also supporting the development of a stronger linguistic identity among students. Despite challenges related to classroom management and teacher readiness, the study underscores the transformative potential of interactive, technology-enhanced, and culturally grounded pedagogy in Islamic boarding schools. The results offer practical implications for Arabic language curriculum design, teacher training, and policy reform, while also contributing to the broader discourse on learner-centered education in non-native Arabic-speaking contexts.

Abstract

In Arabic language education, writing remains one of the most underdeveloped yet essential skills, particularly for non-native learners who often excel in grammar drills but struggle to produce coherent and expressive texts. This study explores the role of Ibda’ Magazine as an authentic, student-centered platform to enhance Arabic writing skills and literacy among 60 third-year Tsanawiyah students at Pondok Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the research draws on thematic analysis of student writings, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews with both learners and instructors. The findings reveal significant improvement in students' vocabulary use, grammatical accuracy, narrative coherence, and stylistic expression. Additionally, learners reported increased confidence, motivation, and a deeper sense of ownership over their Arabic writing. The study affirms that culturally relevant, print-based media can serve as powerful pedagogical tools in bridging the gap between formal instruction and meaningful language practice, offering new pathways for Arabic writing development in Islamic educational settings.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of role-playing techniques in enhancing Arabic speaking proficiency among female learners in an Islamic boarding school. The research aims to evaluate how role-playing activities influence learners’ fluency, vocabulary use, pronunciation accuracy, and communicative confidence. Adopting a mixed-methods design, the study integrates quantitative pre- and post-test measurements with qualitative classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analysis reveals a statistically significant improvement in students’ overall speaking performance (p < 0.001), with the most notable gains observed in fluency and self-rated speaking confidence. Qualitative findings further indicate that role-playing activities reduce speaking anxiety, increase learner motivation, and foster higher levels of classroom engagement by providing meaningful and contextually relevant communicative practice. Grounded in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, the findings suggest that interactive and gender-sensitive pedagogical approaches create a supportive learning environment that facilitates authentic language use. The study concludes that role-playing serves not only as a speaking practice technique but also as an affective scaffold that empowers female learners to participate more actively in Arabic communication. Practically, the study offers an adaptable instructional model for Arabic educators seeking to integrate experiential learning strategies to bridge linguistic competence and communicative confidence in speaking instruction.
