Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of the declining number of listeners of Madu FM Radio, especially among the digital generation, who began to switch from analog radio to digital platforms such as podcasts and streaming music. This change in media consumption patterns encourages Madu FM Radio to adapt to the needs and communication patterns of listeners in order to remain relevant and maintain audience loyalty. Theoretically, this research refers to Harold Lasswell's Communication Model and the concept of 7C's of Communication from Cutlip and Center (2006) to understand effective communication patterns and radio broadcast patterns, especially related to aspects of credibility, context, message content, clarity, continuity and consistency, communication channels, and audience capacity. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to answer research questions related to communication patterns and broadcast patterns of Madu FM Radio in attracting and maintaining listeners' interest. Informants were selected using purposive sampling technique, consisting of broadcasters, content team, and active listeners of Madu FM Radio. Data collection techniques included observation of broadcast and content patterns, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies of broadcast data and listener interaction patterns. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the communication patterns and broadcast patterns of Radio Madu FM are in line with the concept of the 7C's of Communication and are reinforced by the theme of communication. Abstract

This study examines the inhibiting and supporting factors of Hidayat-Sigit’s victory in the 2015 Palu Mayoral Election using a political marketing approach based on the 4P concept (Product, Price, Place, Promotion). A qualitative descriptive study with an interpretive approach was conducted through interviews, observation, literature review, and documentation. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that a well-planned political marketing strategy, such as forming a success team, mobilizing volunteers using an MLM approach, and leveraging Hidayat’s mass base, was a key supporting factor in their victory. Inhibiting factors include limited financial resources and the negative public perception of Sigit’s celebrity image, which affected voter trust. The study concludes that effective political marketing strategies, grounded in market research and two-way communication, can overcome obstacles and meet the needs of Palu’s community, although excessive image-building may reduce voter rationality.

Abstract

Rakesh's music video - Penguasa Malam is a story about a worker who experiences a dilemma between the mental burden of work and the need to please himself. This research examines the visual signs of the video clip regarding the social criticism of the working class in response to the development of capitalism. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with semiotic analysis method from Roland Barthes. The results showed that the meaning of the representation of working-class social criticism from Rakesh's video clip – Penguasa Malam presents a representation of class conflict between the lower working class (proletariat) and the upper class (bourgeoisie) under the influence of capitalism, where the concept of 'alienation' is often used as a visual message of criticism from the working class (proletariat) against capitalism, so that forms of criticism are presented such as self-introspection, fighting alienation, seeking peace and freedom, and fighting established social control.

Abstract

Psychological pressure experienced by younger generations due to identity crises and life uncertainty has created a demand for the representation of positive values in popular culture. Express Mode, a song by Super Junior, serves as a medium that conveys the theme of perseverance and resilience. This study aims to analyze how the meaning of never giving up is constructed in the song’s lyrics using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research method is descriptive qualitative, focusing on three levels of meaning: denotative, connotative, and myth. The findings show that the lyrics construct the image of a modern hero who is progressive and determined in facing challenges. This representation is reinforced by Super Junior’s real-life experience as a group active for over two decades in the entertainment industry. The song functions as a cultural agent that conveys ideological values such as courage, optimism, and determination. In conclusion, Express Mode builds a symbolic narrative that inspires emotional strength among today’s youth.

Abstract

Islamic community radio is increasingly challenged by media convergence and changing audience habits during digital transition. This study examines how broadcasters’ communication competence functions as a key mechanism for sustaining audience engagement and loyalty in Radio Purbowangi FM, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with five informants (two broadcasters, one technician, and two listeners), participant observation of on-air and off-air activities, and document analysis of programme recordings and audience interactions. The data were analyzed thematically using Spitzberg and Cupach’s communication competence framework, comprising knowledge, motivation, and skills. The findings indicate that: (1) knowledge is reflected in broadcasters’ understanding of moderate Islamic values, sensitivity to local culture, and their ability to tailor messages to audience segments; (2) motivation is evidenced by a service-oriented and prosocial commitment, including broadcasters’ roles as community information brokers and active participation in local activities; and (3) skills are demonstrated through dialogic on-air delivery, real-time responsiveness via interactive channels (e.g., phone/WhatsApp), technical mastery of broadcasting, and adaptation to selected digital channels such as live streaming, alongside promotional collaboration with local MSMEs. Overall, the study highlights communication competence as a stabilizing resource that enables Islamic community radio to remain relevant and socially embedded amid digital transition.
