Abstract

This research examines the incorporation of Islamic values into Sharia tourism practices in Sapuro, a religious tourism destination in Pekalongan City. The primary issue with this research is the irregularity in applying Islamic principles to manage the pilgrimage area, despite Sapuro being one of the most visited religious destinations in the region. The purpose of this research is to explore the implementation of Islamic values, including cleanliness, comfort of worship, simplicity, halal food, and the sanctity of the place in the infrastructure and services of the destination. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques that included observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the community and tourism actors have organically internalized Islamic values through social and cultural practices without formal regulatory intervention. The community’s collective consciousness is key to maintaining the destination’s sanctity, comfort, and ethics. This finding is corroborated by Maqashid Sharia theory, which shows that the management of Sapuro has reflected the protection of visitors’ religion, soul, property, and honor. The novelty of this research lies in its community value-based approach to Sharia tourism, which differs from the trend in previous research that emphasizes structural aspects and certification. This research implies the importance of strengthening Islamic value-based participatory governance to build sustainable, spiritually and socially competitive religious destinations.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of Islamic legal regulation in enhancing the competitiveness of the halal tourism industry in Central Java, particularly considering the lack of a formal legal framework governing Sharia-based tourism services and destinations. This study is motivated by Central Java’s low position in the National Halal Tourism Index despite its strong potential in Islamic history and culture. A qualitative approach with a case study method was applied in five selected areas: Demak, Kudus, Magelang, Surakarta, and Semarang. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, field observations, and policy documents analysis. The results show that the absence of specific regional regulations on halal tourism has led to weak service standardization, limited involvement of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and inconsistencies in application of fiqh mu’amalah principles. The study finds that Islamic legal regulations positively influence the competitiveness of halal destinations by increasing Muslim tourists’ trust, improving the quality of halal infrastructure, and promoting Sharia value-based competitive differentiation. The theoretical implications emphasize the integration of Maqashid Sharia and regional competitiveness theory as a comprehensive framework. This research contributes to Islamic public policy by encouraging collaboration among local governments, fatwa institutions, and industry players in building sustainable halal tourism.

Abstract

This research analyzes the role of Islamic philanthropy in Indonesia through a bibliographic approach, examining its contributions, trends, and challenges. A literature review collected data from scholarly sources such as journals, books, and research reports, focusing on publications from the last 5–10 years to ensure relevance. Findings show that Islamic philanthropy—zakat, infaq, sadaqah, and waqf (ZISWAF)—is crucial in poverty alleviation and community empowerment. Research trends indicate a surge in publications after 2015, particularly during the COVID-19 crisis (2020–2021), highlighting ZISWAF’s role in emergencies. Key challenges include low public literacy in waqf, technological barriers, and a lack of transparency in fund management. This study recommends digitalization, improved fund management, and stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to enhance impact. The novelty of this research lies in its bibliographic approach, which identifies research trends and gaps. By addressing existing challenges, Islamic philanthropy can play a more significant role in sustainable development in Indonesia. Keywords: Islamic philanthropy, regulation, bibliographic analysis, and Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of halal management principles in the tourism industry in Indonesia and China as representatives of Muslim majority and minority countries. The main goal is to compare the effectiveness of regulations and infrastructure readiness and identify challenges and opportunities in developing halal tourism destinations. The study uses a qualitative, literature-based approach, analyzing regulatory documents, industry reports, and academic publications. The results of the analysis show that Indonesia adopts a regulation-based model with the support of national halal certification and halal industrial zones. At the same time, China prioritizes a market-based approach in areas with significant Muslim populations. Both countries face obstacles without global halal standards and limited provision of halal services in major destinations. This study highlights the importance of cross-sector collaboration, digital innovation, and policy harmonization to strengthen the competitiveness of global halal destinations. The contribution of this research lies in providing a comparative analysis that enriches the halal management literature and offers practical strategies for developing sustainable halal tourism.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of Islamic rituals and spirituality among Muslim communities in Southeast Asian coastal regions, where these practices have become an integral part of social and cultural life. The central issue addressed is the lack of comprehensive documentation concerning how these communities understand and practice Islamic spirituality and symbolism in the study of modernization and religious reform. Employing a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, this study delves into various ritual practices, including Maulid, Tahlil Laut, Sedekah Bumi, Zikir, and daily Wirid. The findings reveal that coastal Muslim communities interpret these rituals as a means of strengthening social solidarity, fostering a transcendent relationship with God, and maintaining harmony with the natural environment, particularly the sea. Spirituality is practiced communally and passed down as part of a living religious habitus. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice is utilized to analyze the interplay between tradition and change within the community’s social space. This research affirms that Islam in coastal areas is not monolithic but rather contextual, adaptive, and rich in symbolic meaning. The findings contribute to the study of local expressions of Islam and offer new insights into the diversity of religious practices in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This study explores the contribution of Muhammad Mustafa Azami in responding to Orientalist critiques of the authenticity of hadith as a primary source of Islamic teachings. In contemporary Islamic studies, hadith has often been the target of criticism, particularly by Western Orientalists such as Joseph Schacht, who argued that hadith was a fabrication by later Muslim scholars rather than originating from the Prophet Muhammad himself. Such views have undermined the authority of hadith and shifted its central role in Islamic epistemology. Azami, a renowned hadith scholar and academic, systematically refuted these claims through his seminal works, including Studies in Early Hadith Literature and On Schacht’s Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence. He challenged the Orientalist methodology and demonstrated that both the isnad (chain of transmission) and matn (content) of hadith were preserved and codified with rigorous scholarly discipline since the earliest generations of Islam. This research employs a qualitative approach using literature review methods to analyze Azami’s arguments. The findings reveal that Azami not only reaffirmed the authenticity of hadith but also strengthened its standing in global academic discourse. His contributions significantly defend the integrity of Islamic scholarly tradition and foster a more balanced dialogue between classical Islamic and contemporary Western approaches.
