Abstract

Multicultural education is a crucial instrument for fostering social cohesion and minimizing polarization in the global era. This study aims to analyze contemporary trends, instructional strategies, and structural barriers in implementing multicultural education through a systematic literature review. Data were extracted from 12 reputable academic articles published between 2021 and 2026, encompassing journals indexed in SINTA (Indonesia) and SCOPUS (Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United States). Employing thematic synthesis, the study reveals three primary findings. First, Indonesia excels in integrating tolerance through local wisdom and religious moderation to unite hundreds of ethnic groups. Second, Malaysia focuses on structural interventions via collaborative co-curricular activities to reduce invisible ethnic segregation among students. Third, the United States leads in instructional micro-pedagogy by standardizing Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) methods to mitigate teacher bias. Universally, a shared global paradox emerges: the implementation of inclusive character values is routinely sidelined by macro-level institutional pressures prioritizing standardized, quantitative academic metrics. This study concludes that successful multicultural education demands an adaptive curriculum coupled with rigorous intercultural teacher training. Recommendations are directed toward education ministries to reform assessment tools and teacher-training institutions to institutionalize mandatory CRT coursework.
