Abstract

Abstract

The Samin community (Sedulur Sikep) in Margomulyo, Bojonegoro, has the value of Pitutur Luhur inherited by Samin Surosentiko, but it has not been represented in the batik jarik motif as a communal identity. This creation-based research aims to explore this value, realize it in the design of written batik, and examine its philosophical meaning as an effort to preserve intangible cultural heritage. The method used is practice-based research with a qualitative approach through literature study (ethical data), participatory observation, and in-depth interviews with elders (emic data). The creation process refers to the stages of experimentation, manekung, and the formation of the work. The result was in the form of three prototypes of jarik batik written with a dye cover technique with napthol dye (dark blue (wedel), brown (sogan), white), displaying the main motif of Wijaya Kusuma flowers combined with supporting motifs as a representation of the principle of Pitutur Luhur. The three designs (Manunggal Jati, Kamulyan Jati, and Margomulyo) reflect the values of unity, wisdom, and communal harmony. This research contributes to the development of the aesthetics of the archipelago, the enrichment of Indonesian batik motifs, and the strengthening of the visual identity of the Samin people through an adaptive and sustainable approach to cultural preservation.

Abstract

Abstract. Anggorojati A, Widayat R, Budi S. 2023. Visualization of paddy in Panel 65 of the Karmawibhangga Section of Borobudur Temple. Biodiversitas 24: 990-1003. Borobudur Temple is a building whose reliefs depict the Buddhist scriptures in the form of pictures, reliefs, and statues. Each relief contains a certain message and interpretation that not all visitors can understand the storyline when they observe, especially only at a glance. The Karmawibhangga relief is found at the Borobudur Temple's lowest section. The lowest relief represents the hustle and bustle of worldly life, consisting of 160 panels, all of which have different images from one panel to another. Based on the existing literature results, an iconographic approach, reliefs in the form of paddy, is used to analyze the interpretation of the Karmawibhangga relief 65 on paddy to make it easier for people who desire to acquire information about it to symbolize prosperity. Paddy is depicted with plump grains, ready to harvest and being guarded by several people from rats. This study can be used as a reference in the future regarding the visualization description of paddy in the Karmawibhangga relief for future researchers.

Abstract

Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a tropical aquatic plant known for its extremely rapid growth, often regarded as a water weed due to its negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, this plant possesses significant potential as a raw material for handicrafts with economic value. This community service program (PKM) was conducted in Bugel Village, Panjatan Sub-district, Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, with a dual purpose: to empower the local community by transforming water hyacinth into economically valuable craft products and, at the same time, to contribute to aquatic weed control. The primary target of the program was a group of housewives who had available time but were not yet engaged in productive activities, along with several active participants, including Hery Prazogie, Eko, Tolob, Susilo Edi, and Fauzi. The methods employed included program socialization, craft production training (covering drying techniques, material sorting, and weaving skills), basic business management training, as well as continuous mentoring and monitoring. The program was implemented over eight months, from January to August 2025. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ skills. After three training sessions, most participants were already able to independently produce simple craft items. By the end of the program, more than 60 craft products had been successfully created, including bags, baskets, table mats, chairs, pencil holders, and various household accessories. Institutionally, the program led to the establishment of a small business group named Anyaman Bugel Mandiri “Independent Bugel Weaving”, serving as a collective platform for the community to develop creative economy-based enterprises. The program outputs also included scientific publications, promotional media (posters, features in local newspapers), and a documentary video, all of which strengthened the sustainability of the initiative. Overall, this activity demonstrates that water hyacinth once considered an environmental problem can be transformed into a new economic resource that supports the improvement of rural community welfare.
