Abstract

Vocational education in Indonesia has extensively adopted the Teaching Factory (Tefa) model as a primary strategy to meet the demands of the industry. However, this model, which focused on the replication of modern industrial processes, faces challenges in producing graduates who are grounded in the context of local wisdom. This approach risks fostering a skills mismatch and potentially producing graduates who are uprooted from their cultural context. This article argues that the integration of local wisdom can fundamentally transform Tefa, shifting its paradigm from mere industrial replication to an incubator for local wisdom-based innovation. The goal is to achieve a vocational education system that is both economically relevant and deeply rooted in national identity. Employing a narrative literature review, this study synthesizes academic literature to address the urgency, form, opportunities, and challenges of this transformation. The findings indicate that transforming Tefa is crucial for fostering contextual learning, preserving cultural heritage, and unlocking new competitive advantages. This transformation manifests at the conceptual, curricular and pedagogical, product innovation, and community partnership levels. The analysis highlights that this process turns Tefa into a creative ecosystem, yet it must navigate the crucial tension between authenticity and commercialization. This article concludes that positioning local wisdom at the core of Tefa is a strategic move toward achieving a vocational education that is not only economically relevant but also firmly rooted in national identity.

Abstract

Digitalization is a major transformation in education, particularly in preparing graduates to face the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Society 5.0. This study aims to analyze the impact of digital transformation on the work readiness of graduates from the Mechanical Engineering Education Program at Universitas Palangka Raya. Using a literature review method, the study identifies strategies for integrating technology into the curriculum, developing digital literacy, and collaborating with industries to ensure the relevance of graduate competencies. The findings indicate that technology-based curricula, improved digital literacy among educators, and support for educational infrastructure are critical factors in producing competent and adaptable graduates for the global job market. Strategic recommendations include strengthening professional training to enhance digital competencies among educators, integrating digital literacy into the curriculum, and developing digital leadership at the institutional level. Additionally, collaboration among universities, government, and industries is essential to design policies that support sustainable digital transformation. This study provides significant contributions to higher education institutions in designing strategies to improve graduate work readiness in the digital era

Abstract

Vocational education, particularly Vocational High Schools (SMKs), plays a strategic role in preparing competent human resources who are adaptable to labor market demands. One approach developed to enhance the relevance of vocational learning to industry needs is the Teaching Factory (TEFA) model. However, the implementation of TEFA in many vocational schools often faces challenges related to the market relevance of the products. This study aims to analyze the potential integration of local wisdom-based TEFA and to map its alignment with the spectrum of vocational competencies in SMKs in Palangka Raya City. This research employed a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving 16 SMKs and local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) producing local wisdom-based products. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The findings indicate that Palangka Raya City possesses significant local wisdom-based economic potential in crafts, culinary products, herbal products, fashion, and tourism sectors. Furthermore, the vocational competencies available in the 16 SMKs demonstrate strong alignment with the development of local wisdom-based TEFA products. This integration has the potential to establish a collaborative TEFA ecosystem among SMKs across upstream and downstream sectors, thereby enhancing graduates' employability skills and supporting the growth of the regional creative economy.

Abstract

The lack of technical knowledge regarding klotok engine maintenance among fishermen in the Kahayan River Basin results in a high risk of operational damage. This Community Service Program aims to improve fishermen's skills through theoretical and practical training in klotok engine repair. The program's main advantage lies in its sociocultural approach to correcting technical misconceptions, namely by aligning academic terms with local terminology that is easily understood by the local community. The results of an evaluation of 11 participants showed that this approach effectively increased participant knowledge with an N-Gain of 0.405 and achieved a satisfaction level of 87.27%. The practical implication of this finding is the recommendation to develop a machine maintenance guide module that adopts local language and terms as a self-learning reference for fishermen.
