Abstract

Acne (acne vulgaris) is a skin inflammation caused by the overgrowth of bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study aims to formulate a gel preparation containing ethanol extract of date flesh and evaluate its antibacterial activity. The extract was obtained via maceration using 70% ethanol. The gel was formulated in three extract concentrations: 10%, 20%, and 30%. Physical evaluations of the gel included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and adhesiveness, while antibacterial activity was tested using the disk diffusion method. The results showed that the 30% concentration provided the largest inhibition zone against both test bacteria. Physical evaluations confirmed that the gel preparation met the criteria for a stable topical product. It can be concluded that the ethanol extract of date flesh can be effectively formulated into an antibacterial gel preparation and has potential as a natural antiacne product.

Abstract

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica) is a vegetable recognized for its abundant bioactive components, such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and vitamin C, which are linked to antioxidant capabilities. Notwithstanding its health advantages, the broccoli stalk is frequently disregarded and underexploited, despite its potential as a source of natural antioxidant chemicals. This work aims to assess the antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract from broccoli stalks utilizing the DPPH method and to ascertain its IC₅₀ value. The extraction was conducted via the maceration method utilizing 70% ethanol, and the antioxidant activity was assessed through UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a peak wavelength of 516 nm. The results indicated that the ethanolic extract of broccoli stem possesses considerable antioxidant activity, with an IC₅₀ value of 35.74 µg/ml. The IC₅₀ value of vitamin C was shown to be 7.67 µg/ml. The results indicate that broccoli stalks may be a significant source of natural antioxidants. The validation of the analytical method demonstrated outstanding results, including linearity (r = 0.9989), accuracy (100.57%), and precision (%RSD = 0.5646%).

Abstract

This study aims to formulate and evaluate aromatherapy wax preparations from nightshade flower essential oil extract (Polianthes tuberosa) as an effort to handle non-pharmacological stress. The essential oil of the nightshade flower is obtained through the method of steam distillation from 10 kg of fresh flowers, resulting in 30 ml of essential oil. The characterization of simplicia showed a moisture content of 5.71%, a water soluble cider content of 17.13%, an ethanol soluble cider content of 18.01%, a total ash content of 10.82%, and an acid-insoluble ash content of 1.49%, meeting the requirements of the Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Phytochemical screening identifies alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, triterpenoids, and glycosides. Aromatherapy candles are formulated in four variations of essential oil concentrations (Polianthes tuberosa): 0% (F0), 5% (F1), 10% (F2), and 15% (F3), as well as one positive control (F4). Physical evaluation shows all formulas have a good, dense, and air bubble-free appearance. The hedonic test showed that the F3 formula (15% essential oil) was preferred by the panelists in terms of aroma, shape, and color, and provided a significant relaxation and refreshment effect, close to the quality of commercial products. The F3's burn time reaches 10 hours, showing good durability.

Abstract

White broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) is a vegetable rich in vitamin C and has potential as a functional food source beneficial to health. This study aimed to determine the vitamin C content in white broccoli available in Deli Tua District using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method and to evaluate the validity of the applied analytical method. The broccoli sample was extracted, analyzed qualitatively using iodine reagent, and quantitatively at a maximum wavelength of 265 nm. The calibration curve was constructed using five standard concentrations of vitamin C with a regression equation of y = 0.0495x + 0.0019 and a correlation coefficient r = 0.9996, indicating excellent linearity. The analysis showed that the vitamin C content was 1,8098 mg/g. The method validation met the required criteria: accuracy % recovery of 108.36%, precision RSD 0.47739%, limit of detection LOD of 0.18375, and limit of quantification LOQ of 0.61325. Therefore, the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method is proven valid and accurate for determining the vitamin C content in white broccoli.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extract of cytolod leaves (Isotoma longiflora (L.) C. Presl) formulated in spray deodorant preparations as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. The extraction of cytolod leaves is carried out by the maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. Spray deodorant preparations are made in three different extract concentrations, namely 3% (F1), 5% (F2), and 8% (F3), with positive control using commercial deodorant (AXE) and negative control in the form of a base preparation without extract. Antibacterial effectiveness testing was carried out using the suction diffusion method. The results of the physical evaluation showed that all formulas met the requirements of organoleptic, pH, clarity, viscosity, drying time, sprayability, and did not cause irritation to the skin. The results of the antibacterial activity test showed that the higher the concentration of the extract, the larger the barrier zone formed. Formulas with a concentration of 8% (F3) show the most effective inhibition activity with an average inhibition zone diameter of 15.73 mm, which belongs to the strong category.
