Abstract

This article examines the historical-critical approach developed by Nicolai Sinai in Quranic studies. The main focus includes three methodological dimensions: literary coherence and secondary revision, inner-Qur’anic chronology, and intertextuality. Through a qualitative library research method, this study explores how Sinai's approach offers an empirical and systematic alternative to traditional and earlier Western historical-critical methods that are often accused of undermining Islamic orthodoxy. Sinai’s contribution fills a significant gap in contemporary Qur’anic hermeneutics by bridging classical Islamic interpretive traditions and modern critical methodologies. His framework offers a more nuanced and respectful engagement with the Qur’anic text, avoiding reductionist tendencies while encouraging deeper philological and literary analysis. The study reveals how Sinai’s moderate historical-critical model, grounded in textual data, can enrich both Western and Islamic scholarship in understanding the historical development, structure, and intertextual dialogue of the Qur’an.

Abstract

Abstract

This research analyses the development of living Qur'an studies between 2005 and 2025 using the keywords “Living Qur’an”, “Living Al-Qur’an”, "Living Al-Quran", and “Living Al-Quran,” with two keywords containing no apostrophe. Data scraping and analysis rely on a bibliometric approach by analyzing utilizing tools such as R, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel to see the development of living Qur'an studies from the category of publications per year, average article citations, most publication sources, local impact of publication sources, most productive authors, most affiliated sources, and most cited documents globally in the database. The steps taken to categorize the data are as follows: determining keywords, searching for data, selecting articles, checking the validity of the data, and finally, analysis. The results showed that, since the emergence of the Living Qur'an from 2005 to 2025, the trend increased significantly from 2016 to 2022, peaking in 2022 with 99 articles. However, despite the increase in quantity, the academic impact of these articles is limited, as reflected in the journal's h-index. This finding also suggests that a university’s collective interest and productivity in the Living Qur'an discourse is not related to the presence of the discourse specialists in the given university.

Abstract

Shawkat M Toorawa is known for his innovative efforts in translating the Quran in English. He pays attention not only to the accuracy of meaning but also the aesthetic aspects such as rhyme and grammatical structure. In translating Surah Al Fatihah Toorawa managed to maintain rhyme consistently. The purpose of this study is to answer two academic problems namely to examine how Shawkat Toorawa maintains rhyming prose in his translation of Surah Al Fatihah and how Toorawa balances the aesthetic elements and syntactical conformity of the source text. This research uses the library research method by utilizing and synthesizing Shawkat Toorawas primary sources as well as some secondary writings that examine his thoughts. The results show that in translating Surah Al Fatihah Toorawa managed to balance the rhyming prose choose diction that has syllable stress uniformity and maintain the syntactic function of each word well. Sometimes he also made idiomatic transformations in his translation but he did not lose the essence of the verse. Toorawas innovation reflects an attempt to bring back the essence of the beauty of the musical resonance of the Quranic verse for non Arabic readers.

Abstract

Sufi exegesis of the isyārĭ type continues to be a subject of debate, as it is often regarded as subjective, weak in terms of verifiable transmission, and potentially prone to departing from the literal (ẓāhir) meaning of the Qur’an. This article responds to these concerns by examining how Abū ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamĭ (d. 412 H/1021 M) constructed an epistemic foundation for mystical interpretation in his work Ḥaqā’iq al-Tafsĭr, focusing specifically on the case of the muqaṭṭa’āt (disjointed letters). This study employs a qualitative library-based approach, using Ḥaqā’iq al-Tafsĭr and al-Sulamĭ’s works related to the malāmatiyyah tradition as primary sources, supported by scholarship on the historical development of Sufism in Khurāsān and the discourse on the science of letters. The analysis is conducted through qualitative content analysis and historical-contextual interpretation using an operational A-B-C coding scheme. The findings demonstrate that al-Sulamĭ’s reading of the muqaṭṭa’āt is not merely a form of individual symbolism, but rather a structured epistemic practice articulated through a stratification of meaning between ẓāhir and isyārah, spiritual authorization mediated through networks of early Sufi authority, and an ethical-spiritual validation oriented toward transformative experience. This article highlights the contribution of this interpretive model while also acknowledging its limitations, particularly the requirement of coherence with the ẓāhir meaning and adherence to the discipline of spiritual propriety (adab).
