Abstract

Background: The Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is causing problems in public health. One of the prevention efforts is vaccination. Omicron, the new variant of COVID-19, is a variant that is spreading rapidly in Indonesia, including in Riau Province. Purpose: This study aims to describe the determinants of vaccination status in deaths of Omicron variant COVID-19 patients in Riau Province from February to April 2022. Methods: Cross-sectional research was conducted using secondary data. A total of 158 patients who died with confirmed COVID-19 and the Omicron variant via S-Gene Target Failure (SGTF) and sequencing test, and were treated at a referral hospital in Riau Province within two months (8 February – 4 April 2022) were included in the study. The distribution of patient deaths was analyzed univariately and bivariately. Results: Most of the death cases were unvaccinated (67.09%). As many as 48.73% of the 158 deaths were elderly ≥61 years, and the majority (70.13%) of cases were unvaccinated. It was found that 64.56% of the 158 patient deaths occurred in mainland Riau, and the majority (67.65%) were unvaccinated. Diabetes mellitus (35.86%) and cardiovascular disease (28.97%) were the highest comorbidities. Conclusion: In preventing deaths due to COVID-19, it is necessary to accelerate and increase vaccination coverage, especially for children and the elderly in land and coastal areas. Vaccination can optimize protection against COVID-19. Apart from that, efforts are needed to prevent the severity of comorbidities.

Abstract

Abstract Malaria remains a public health issue in Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau, despite its elimination certification 2018. In 2024, a malaria outbreak occurred, and an epidemiological investigation was then carried out. This study aims to describe the epidemiological characteristics of the malaria outbreak based on person, time, and place. This study used a serial case design, analyzing all confirmed malaria cases reported in the e-SISMAL system of Indragiri Hilir Regency from September 1st to November 30th, 2024. Data on Anopheles Sundaicus habitats were obtained from epidemiological investigation reports. Univariate and bivariate analyses were conducted using the chi-square test. Among them 248 identified cases, with 50% aged 15–45 years, 55.2% male, and 27.0% housewives. Among them, 90.3% had no history of malaria, 91.5% were infected with Plasmodium vivax, and 63.7% experienced fever and/or chills. The peak of cases occurred in week 41, with 66.5% seeking treatment within 1–3 days. A total of 98.4% of cases were from Kuala Selat Village, with an Annual Parasite Incidence (API) of 112.4‰. The primary habitat of Anopheles Sundaicus was in lagoons, with the highest larval density found in water bodies with salinity level of 6–11‰. Bivariate analysis showed a significant association between male gender and high-risk occupations with symptomatic malaria status (pAnopheles Sundaicus habitats are necessary. Additional, protection for high-risk groups, education, and enhanced surveillance should be reinforced to prevent future case surges. Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic condition that adversely affects quality of life (QoL). Identifying factors associated with QoL is essential for improving hypertension management. This study aimed to identify factors associated with QoL among hypertensive patients in Riau Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2024 to January 2025 at two public health centers in Riau Province: Puskesmas Rejosari in Pekanbaru City and Puskesmas Bagansiapi-api in Rokan Hilir Regency. A total of 150 hypertensive patients aged 25-59 years were enrolled. QoL was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, dietary patterns, and physical activity. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis, Chi-square test for bivariate associations, and modified Cox regression for multivariable analysis. Among the respondents, 52.0% had poor QoL. Bivariate analysis showed that comorbidities (PR = 1.61; 95% CI: 1.00-2.59), unhealthy dietary patterns (PR = 2.08; 95% CI: 1.21–3.56), and insufficient physical activity (PR = 2.70; 95% CI: 1.68–4.34) were significantly associated with poor QoL. In the multivariable analysis, insufficient physical activity remained the only independent determinant of poor QoL (aPR = 2.45; 95% CI: 1.51–3.97), whereas dietary patterns showed a borderline association (aPR = 1.72; 95% CI: 0.99–2.97). Insufficient physical activity was the only independent determinant of poor QoL among hypertensive patients. Promoting regular physical activity may improve QoL, while the independent role of dietary pattern requires further investigation.
