Abstract

The objective of this study was to clarify the specific methods of politeness used during interactions between teachers and students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, and to analyze the influence of these strategies on the educational process. The author chose to gather data from the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Ngantang throughout the academic year 2023/2024. The study encompassed the entire group of individuals involved in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, comprising both the teacher and the students. The study involved 20 participants in total. Data was gathered in a natural environment, with the researcher observing the teaching and learning activities without implementing any modifications or interventions.The data was analyzed using Miles & Huberman's (1994) interactive cycle model of qualitative data analysis, which involved three simultaneous processes: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing or verifying conclusions. It identified four unique politeness strategies: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. According to the findings, the researcher concluded that the teacher exhibited positive politeness during the instructional activities. Furthermore, the teacher utilized polite language and their demeanor was marked by attentiveness, delight, and friendliness. The majority of students in the class displayed exemplary etiquette by showing deference to their teacher throughout the instructional and educational endeavors.

Abstract

Peneliti lebih fokus pada keterampilan berbicara dalam kelas Basic English Speaking karena berbicara dianggap sebagai keterampilan yang sulit dan rumit untuk dipelajari oleh mahasiswa tahun pertama. Dalam berbicara, mereka harus menghasilkan ide, kata-kata, kalimat sehingga mereka dapat berkomunikasi dengan baik dan benar. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa dengan menggunakan gambar tematik; dan untuk mendeskripsikan hasil penggunaan media gambar tematik dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara mahasiswa di kelas Basic English Speaking. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang dilakukan, ditemukan bahwa penggunaan gambar tematik secara keseluruhan dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara mahasiswa. Hal ini dapat dilihat melalui tindakan siklus I dan siklus II yang menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan berbicara. Pada siklus I dan juga observasi keterampilan berbicara mahasiswa menggunakan media gambar menunjukkan 15 atau 48% mahasiswa nilainya di bawah kriteria ketuntasan studi. Nilai mahasiswa pada siklus II meningkat dibandingkan pada siklus I. Hasil rata-rata kelas mencapai 85%. Oleh karena itu, gambar tematik dapat membantu mahasiswa belajar berbicara dengan lebih mudah. Para peneliti menyarankan kepada dosen untuk membuat inovasi baru dalam pembelajaran.

Abstract

This study analyses Lara Pangkon's utterances at the ceremony of temu manten in Kec. Ngantang, in order to know the forms of speech acts, explain their meaning and how they are conveyed. In this research, the method used was descriptive qualitative research method, with the data source of this research is the utterances in Lara Pangkon as the main data source from and documentation books as additional data sources. In the end, this research shows that each form of speech delivered contains meanings and symbols that contain speech acts. After being studied, it can be concluded that from the 2 (two) parts of Lara Pangkon's possession, the speeches presented by both Pamasrah and Panampi contained 3 (three) expressive speech acts, 3 (three) directive speech acts, 3 (three) assertive speech acts and 2 (two) clear and commissive speech acts that can be conveyed briefly and straightforwardly.

Abstract

The bilingual children story books have distinctive characteristics, one of them is having onomatopoeia. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to determine the translation method and procedure used in translating onomatopoeia and word play in Little Abid Series in spiritual and general values (11 books) and Seri Dongeng Dunia Binatang (7 books). In Little Abid Series in spiritual and general values the onomatopoeias or word play were expressed in the book Jujur Itu Hebat (1), Aku Bangga pada Mereka (1), and Aku Rajin Mengaji (1). In Dongeng Dunia Binatang they were expressed in the book Bebek dan Burung Hantu (2), Semut dan Lebah (1), and Rusa yang Sombong (2). The translator of Little Abid Series and translator of Dongeng Dunia Binatang in translating onomatopoeias and word play used semantic method and functional equivalence procedure because the translators wanted to emphasize the understanding of the early age readers by using words that are simple and easy to understand. Therefore, the researchers suggests that the adaptation translation method can be used to translate children’s books since in order to give maximum benefit to the readers. It means that the translators must be more creative in arranging words in the target language.
