Abstract

This study aims to address the conventional approach to local content learning at SDI Al Aziziyah, which leads to boredom and low student participation. The Karapan Sapi tradition, a Madurese cultural tradition, holds significant educational value, but has not been presented interactively in learning. Therefore, a multisensory Smart Box Karapan Sapi media was developed using a qualitative-descriptive approach. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and questionnaires to analyze needs, the design process, and initial user responses. The results showed that the Smart Box received very positive responses from teachers and students because it was able to present cultural learning in a more engaging, contextual, and interactive manner. This media is considered to have the potential to increase cultural literacy and be an effective strategy in preserving local cultural heritage in elementary education

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program was implemented at Public Elementary School Gedangan 3 in the rural district of Sumobito, Jombang, where school gardens support greening and environmental learning but plant care is constrained by manual, inconsistent watering. The project focused on introducing an automatic plant-watering system based on the Internet of Things using a soil-moisture sensor, a microcontroller, a relay, tubing, and a small water pump. The objectives were to motivate students’ interest in technology that benefits daily life, increase their knowledge of automatic watering principles and components, and provide direct practice operating a simple device. The approach combined participatory planning with teachers, structured instruction through presentation slides, a live demonstration of the device, guided student practice, and interactive discussion. Activities were conducted on 21 August 2025 with eighteen students from grades five and six, with classroom teachers acting as facilitators. Results showed improved student understanding of component functions and system operation, greater confidence and curiosity toward technology, and more consistent watering practices that support plant growth while using water efficiently. Students reported finding the learning enjoyable and accessible, and teachers indicated readiness to sustain the device for routine garden care. The program offers a practical, replicable model for integrating elementary-level technology literacy with environmental stewardship in school settings

Abstract

The gas sensor performance can be improved by optimizing the testing chamber design, including volume, shape, gas inlet/outlet positions, and sensor array. We studied the effect of chamber design on the gas sensor's response patterns characteristics in differentiating Robusta coffee aroma from Sidomulyo, and Bangsalsari, Jember. Hemisphere and cylindrical chambers, with three variations for each model, and a ring chamber, were used as model chambers. Eight types of gas sensors (MQ-135, MQ-136, MQ-2, MQ-3, MQ-6, MQ-7, MQ-8, and MQ-9) were used in the sensor array system to examine the gas sensor instrument performance. The resulting responses were analyzed using the reproducibility, response time, and principal component analysis (PCA) test. The result shows that the reproducibility value for all hemisphere chamber models, cylindrical chamber model-1, and ring chamber indicated an excellent sensor performance (%RSD<20%). Meanwhile, the cylindrical chambers model-2 and 3 resulted in %RSD>20%, indicating the low performance of the gas sensor. Among all variations, hemisphere chamber model-1, a hemisphere chamber with the inlet position lower than the outlet gas position, has the best performance due to the shortest response time, high-intensity signal, and performing ability to distinguish the response patterns characteristics of Robusta coffee aroma from Sidomulyo and Bangsalsari, Jember, Indonesia. In this study, we found that changing the testing chamber design, volume, and inlet/outlet position resulting different gas sensor responses to the coffee aroma. The proposed instrument can distinguish the coffee aroma from a different origin.
