Abstract

Objectives: Effective communication between coaches and athletes constitutes a critical determinant of competitive success in modern sports. English has emerged as the lingua franca of international athletics, yet the specific linguistic features and communicative patterns employed during tactical exchanges remain underexplored. This study investigates how English is utilized for tactical communication in multilingual sports settings and examines the relationship between communication clarity and athletic performance outcomes. The primary objective was to analyze the linguistic characteristics, frequency patterns, and effectiveness of English-language tactical communications between coaches and athletes in competitive environments, with particular emphasis on identifying communication factors that correlate with successful performance outcomes. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed with 156 participants (78 coach-athlete dyads) from 12 different sports disciplines across 8 countries. Data collection involved video analysis of training sessions and competitions (n=234 hours), linguistic corpus analysis of 3,847 tactical communication instances, semi-structured interviews (n=45), and performance outcome measurements. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and ANOVA procedures using SPSS version 28.0. Results: Analysis revealed five primary tactical communication categories: strategic instructions (42.3%), motivational directives (23.7%), technical corrections (18.9%), situational awareness cues (10.4%), and emotional regulation statements (4.7%). Significant positive correlations were identified between communication clarity scores and performance metrics (r = 0.67, p < 0.001). Simplified syntax (mean length utterance = 6.8 words) and sport-specific terminology density (32.4%) characterized effective tactical communications. Native English proficiency showed minimal correlation with communication effectiveness (r = 0.18, p = 0.062), suggesting that functional English competency suffices for tactical contexts. Conclusion: English functions effectively as a tactical communication medium in international sports contexts through simplified linguistic structures, high-frequency sport-specific lexicon, and contextually embedded meaning-making. The study demonstrates that communication effectiveness depends less on grammatical accuracy than on clarity, brevity, and shared understanding of sport-specific terminology. These findings have implications for coach education programs and multilingual athlete development protocols.

Abstract

This review critically examines the book’s contributions, strengths, and areas for improvement, while also discussing its potential impact on English Language Teaching (ELT) and multilingual education. Digital Storytelling as Translanguaging is thoughtfully organised into three distinct parts, each providing a comprehensive approach to integrating digital storytelling with translanguaging in language education. The book begins with an exploration of the theoretical and historical foundations of digital storytelling, followed by practical guidelines for its implementation in the classroom.

Abstract

Objectives: This research investigates the linguistic patterns, communicative effectiveness, and functional applications of English language use in tactical communication between coaches and athletes across multiple competitive sports. The study examines how English as a lingua franca facilitates strategic discourse, decision-making processes, and performance optimization in multilingual sporting environments. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 156 participants (78 coaches and 78 athletes) from 12 countries across six sports disciplines. Data collection included audio recordings of tactical communications (n=312 sessions), semi-structured interviews, linguistic corpus analysis, and validated questionnaires. Statistical analyses utilized ANOVA, regression modeling, and discourse analysis frameworks. Results: Analysis revealed that 73.4% of tactical communication utilized English regardless of participants' native languages. Key linguistic features included simplified syntax (M=8.3 words per utterance), specialized sports terminology (42.1% of lexical items), and imperative mood structures (61.8% of directives). Significant positive correlations emerged between English proficiency levels and tactical comprehension accuracy (r=0.74, p<0.001) and between communication clarity and performance outcomes (r=0.68, p<0.001). Conclusion: English functions as a critical medium for tactical communication in international sports contexts, demonstrating distinct linguistic characteristics optimized for rapid information transfer. The findings suggest that targeted English language training for tactical communication can significantly enhance coach-athlete interaction effectiveness and competitive performance. The study contributes theoretical insights into domain-specific language use and practical implications for sports pedagogy and athlete development programs.

Abstract

Speaking proficiency is an essential skill for students in sports education, as their future professional roles require the capacity to clarify sports regulations, deliver coaching directives, motivate athletes, outline training programs, and communicate effectively in academic or professional settings. In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, speaking poses considerable obstacles as learners must simultaneously manage vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, fluency, comprehension, and confidence (Burns, 2019; Yu et al., 2024). Indonesian EFL learners often face speaking difficulties stemming from limited vocabulary, inadequate fluency, pronunciation concerns, reduced confidence, and speaking anxiety (Marlia et al., 2023; Wijaya, 2023). This study aims to examine the influence of designated subjects on the speaking performance of sports education students at STOK Binaguna Medan. The study utilized a quasi-experimental approach that included a pre-test and post-test control group. Forty students were assigned to an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received instruction in speaking on specific sport-related topics, while the control group participated in conventional speaking coaching. The speaking examination was assessed based on fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension. The findings indicate that the experimental group showed superior advancement compared to the control group. Students who interacted with designated topics demonstrated greater conceptual organization, enriched vocabulary, heightened confidence, and higher speaking fluency. The study demonstrates that designated subjects effectively improve speaking performance in sports education by providing preparation time, contextual relevance, frequent practice, and structured speaking opportunities.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a practice-based training and collaborative mentoring program in enhancing adaptive physical education competencies among Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) teachers to support inclusive teaching practice. Materials and methods: A practice-based professional development program was implemented involving 32 junior and senior high school PJOK teachers participating in the Subject Teacher Forum (MGMP) in Karo Regency, Indonesia. The intervention integrated needs assessment, conceptual workshops, adaptive game modification, lesson-plan development, microteaching, reflective mentoring, and collaborative discussions. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a one-group pretest–posttest approach through knowledge assessments, adaptive teaching-plan evaluations, structured microteaching observations, and participant satisfaction questionnaires. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using percentage scores and normalized gain (N-gain), while qualitative reflections were analyzed thematically. Results: The findings demonstrated substantial improvements in teachers' adaptive physical education competencies following the intervention. Mean knowledge scores increased from 58.28 to 84.84, with an N-gain of 0.64, indicating moderate-to-high learning improvement. The quality of adaptive teaching plans improved from an average score of 60.16 to 86.41, while microteaching performance achieved a mean score of 3.42 (Good category). Furthermore, 90.63% of participants reported that the program was highly relevant to their instructional needs. The most notable improvements were observed in teachers' abilities to modify learning objectives, instructional strategies, equipment, learning environments, assessment methods, and classroom participation to accommodate diverse learner needs. Conclusions: Practice-based training combined with collaborative mentoring effectively strengthened teachers' readiness and adaptive pedagogical competencies for inclusive physical education. The findings suggest that experiential professional development embedded within teacher learning communities can bridge the gap between inclusive education policies and classroom implementation. Sustaining this approach through continuous MGMP-based professional learning communities may contribute to the long-term implementation of inclusive physical education in mainstream schools.
