Abstract

Abstract

The development of a tourist village in Licin Village demonstrates interesting social dynamics, as tourism growth is influenced not only by the potential of the Ijen Crater but also by how the community interprets and collectively builds an economic system. The minimal formal role of the village government in homestay management has led residents to build their own economic structure based on cooperation, equity, and solidarity. This social understanding is a crucial factor in the success of the tourism economy in Licin Village. This research used a qualitative method with Berger & Luckmann's social construction approach. Data analysis was conducted through three stages of social construction: externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The results indicate the formation of a social reality that develops through the community's social processes. First, the community constructs the tourism system as a joint venture that must be managed fairly and equitably. Second, work structures such as the homestay rotation system, role allocation, and village supervision become objective rules accepted as normal. Third, the values of solidarity, income distribution, and service ethics are ultimately internalized as the identity of the tourism village residents. Thus, the social construction of the Licin Village community forms a community-based tourism management model capable of maintaining social harmony and village economic sustainability.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of poverty from the perspective of poor families using a phenomenological approach. The government has defined poverty in various ways, using indicators from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and other institutions. Seven key informants participated in this study, all of whom had at least ten years of experience as poor families in Semampir, Surabaya. This study found that poverty forces the poor in Semampir to survive because they have no other options. The analysis shows that their vulnerability and powerlessness enable poor families to engage in a phenomenological dialectic, enabling them to survive with existing resources and jobs to meet daily needs despite facing many limitations. Kinship and employment bridge the gap. Savings or setting aside income serve as a benchmark for rationalizing what they must do to meet family needs. And the results of the data analysis indicate that limitations in how they can and how to survive are a strong reason for the inability of poor families to manage their finances.

Abstract

This study aims to examine a cooperative-based community empowerment model as a strategy for addressing poverty in Surabaya. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research explores how cooperatives can function as both economic and social institutions that empower impoverished communities through capacity building, access to capital, and the development of partnership networks. The findings reveal that the cooperative empowerment model is effective in improving members’ welfare, despite several challenges, including limited managerial capacity and uneven member participation. The study recommends strengthening the institutional capacity of cooperatives, enhancing community participation, and providing policy support and digital technology to ensure the sustainability of this empowerment model. This model is expected to serve as a sustainable solution for poverty reduction in Surabaya.
