Abstract

This study focuses on poor women in the social environment (village) in the center of the Surabaya metropolis with classical Islamic culture and rules. Social relations and “pesantren culture” are felt in this place. For example: women must wear headscarves every day, men use koko sarongs and shirts, reading the holy verses of the Qur’an are a daily habit. In fact, elementary school children have become memorizers of the Qur’an (hafidz). This place produces “kyai” and “nyai” (saints in Javanese Islam). This study focuses on unequal gender relations between men and women so that poor women experience subordination, as well as empowerment of poor women in the Islamic community in the middle of big cities. Women, especially poor women, have very low bargaining power because of the patriarchal culture and Islamic rules there. Even though poor women help to make a living for the family, all important decisions remain with the husband (male). The methodology used is qualitative. Conduct in-depth interviews with poor women who were married in that place. Researchers also make observations about their daily activities in the community. The result, using Michel Foucault’s power relations theory analysis, found that poor women get unfair relationships every day. They always lose with their husbands in any case. They are always oppressed and subordinated. Poor women get a discourse that women are the second social class in this life. They are a male partner, not the first person. So, important decision makers in the family are always men, not women. Although women help their husbands to work outside the home, decision makers are always husbands. Poor women are also powerless in government development programs. Even though the relationship is not equal, all women accept it because it comes from God’s destiny (Allah SWT). This phenomenon is real and occurs in the center of a big city (Surabaya) which is one of the largest cities in Indonesia.

Abstract

The exploitation and objectification of women are issues that develop across various aspects of life, including the digital realm. From a radical feminist perspective, the phenomenon of Video Call Sex arises due to the rapid advancement of digital technology, leading to increased exploitation of women. This practice commodifies women's bodies to fulfill men's sexual desires. This study aims to analyze the forms of exploitation and objectification experienced by women in Video Call Sex practices. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological perspective was used. Data collection techniques included interviews and participatory observations. The research subjects were women with direct experience in Video Call Sex who were willing to openly share their personal experiences. The study involved three informants, and data collection continued until no new information was found. The study’s findings reveal that: (1) Women are reduced to sexual objects controlled by men, either as clients or as request regulators. (2) There is a power imbalance between men and women, as women are in a vulnerable position in responding to client demands. These findings indicate that women in Video Call Sex practices face not only economic exploitation but also structural oppression that sustains gender inequality. The novelty of this research lies in its in-depth analysis of how digital technology reinforces the exploitation of women within a radical feminist framework and how this practice contributes to the expanding patriarchal system in the digital era.

Abstract

Patriarchal families are still the main pattern in the social structure of Sumbertumpuk Village, Pasuruan, which creates gender inequality and positions women in a subordinate position. This research aims to explore the dynamics of women's roles in patriarchal families and examine the views of liberal feminism as the basis for the transformation of gender equality in the neighborhood. This research method is qualitative research using a gender-based critical descriptive approach, through observation and in-depth interviews with women and men in the family. The results show that women in Sumbertumpuk face a double burden and limited access to education and economic opportunities, which strengthens their dependence on men. However, awareness of the need for change is starting to show through solidarity and small discussions within the family, as well as support from policies that favor women's empowerment. These findings emphasize the importance of policies and education that can facilitate a paradigm shift from patriarchal structures towards more egalitarian families, as supported by the philosophy of liberal feminism.

Abstract

This study discusses the psychological and social impacts experienced by children who grow up in families where both parents work. The main goal is to understand how this situation affects children's emotional development, social relationships, and overall well-being. The method used is a qualitative approach through literature review, collecting data from various articles, journals, and previous research reports. The findings show that children raised by parents who are both busy working often feel lonely, emotionally distant from their parents, and struggle to develop social skills. However, some children also grow to become more independent, responsible, and adaptable to their environment. Factors such as the parenting style applied, the presence of other family members as caregivers, and the quality of time and communication between parents and children greatly influence the extent to which negative impacts can be minimized. Therefore, it is important for parents to find a balance between work and family life, and to implement parenting strategies that are attentive and supportive to ensure the child’s development remains optimal, even in challenging circumstances.

Abstract

Body image on digital platforms, particularly Instagram, has become a significant arena for negotiating and redefining ideals of beauty, self-esteem, and identity, reflecting broader social shifts. This research examines the social construction of the body positivity movement on Instagram among teenage girls in Surabaya through Peter L. Berger’s theoretical framework, which posits that social reality is formed through externalization, objectivation, and internalization, where individuals and society co-create meanings through interaction. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this study involved 12 female informants aged 13-21 who actively use Instagram. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and visual content analysis, and were then analyzed thematically to identify patterns in body image narratives, self-acceptance, and digital resistance. Findings reveal that these young women are not passive recipients of beauty norms; instead, they actively reconstruct bodily meanings through their everyday media practices. The body positivity movement emerges as a counter-narrative that transforms collective identity and redefines women’s bodies from objects to dignified subjects. This research contributes to media and body sociology, emphasizing critical digital literacy and inclusive education in fostering youth empowerment and gender-sensitive interventions.

Abstract

This study will investigate the dynamics of parenting in working families and its implications for adolescent behavior in Surabaya. In families where both parents are employed, parenting faces various challenges that affect emotional closeness and character development among adolescents. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and non-participant observation of adolescents aged 16–19 years. The findings reveal that limited time with parents leads to minimal emotional communication, causing teenagers to internalize personal issues or prefer to share them with peers. On the other hand, this condition also fosters independence, responsibility, and strong social awareness. These findings are analyzed using George Herbert Mead’s role theory, indicating that adolescents indirectly take on parental roles at home. The identity formation process occurs earlier, though at the expense of emotional warmth and interaction within the family.

Abstract

Women's participation in various student organizations is a social phenomenon that embodies gender equality in the campus environment. Traditionally, organizational activities have been dominated by men, but this situation has gradually changed with the growing representation of women in various leadership roles. Higher education institutions, as educational bodies, play a strategic role in shaping students' social practices, particularly female students who are active in organizations. The cultural differences between the student organizations of Sociology at Unesa and UTM present an interesting factor to explore how the social practices of female organizers are formed and interpreted. Using a qualitative approach, the research was conducted through in-depth interviews with female students who are members of student organizations from the Sociology program to obtain accurate data and information. This study aims to explore gender equality among women in the campus organizational scope of two different institutions. It is expected that this research will provide practical and theoretical benefits to readers and the public. Keywords: Women, Organizational, Organization, Student Organizations.
