Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain al-tawassut wa al-i‘tidal in answering the challenge of Islamic liberalism. The presence of Islamic liberalism is seen by Islamic fundamentalism as a notion that prioritizes rationality and beyond the teachings of Islam in understanding the texts of the Qur’an. On the contrary, Islamic liberalism views Islamic fundamentalism as too restrained in the freedom of thought to eliminate the reasoning capabilities that God gives to humans. Through historical analysis and phenomena occurring in the religious life of Muslims, this paper explains the important role of understanding al-tawassut wa al-i‘tidal as the middle path of religion. Moderate (wasatiyah) covers various as- pects: religiosity, spirituality, intellectuality, appearance, attitude, behavior, rela- tions and activities of Muslims in the contemporary era. Various aspects of life must be understood by multi-knowledge in order to avoid ultra-liberal thinking and extremist interpretation. Al-tawassut wa al-i‘tidal is an interpretation of the Qur’an (Surat al-Baqarah: 143) and the hadith of the Prophet for Muslims to be “balance and justice”. In addition, altawassut wa al-i‘tidal combines the “tradi- tions” (al-muhafazah) and “tajdid” (al-akhzu).This paper concludes that al-tawassut wa al-i‘tidal educates Muslims to be tolerant, just, democratic, and not self-righ- teous. If every Muslim understands Islam “moderately” and “justly”, so the truth claim will not happen and ummatan wasat}an will be realized. This paper, theo- retically, is expected to contribute a comprehensive- constructive knowledge in understanding Islamic religious texts. Likewise, practically, the arguments and analysts of this paper become the reference for every ism in Islam to be balanced and justice in religion.

Abstract

Pegayaman, the sole Muslim village in Bali surrounded by Hindu communities, offers a unique context for exploring the interaction between Islamic law and local Hindu cultural traditions. The study examined how Islamic law is negotiated and practiced in the context of Hindu cultural dominance. Using an empirical legal research framework with a socio-legal approach, data were collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with Muslim traditional leaders, religious figures, residents, and migrants. The findings indicated that syncretic practices in Pegayaman do not undermine the Islamic creed (‘aqidah) but rather reflect a process of internalizing and negotiating Islamic values within the local cultural context. Rooted in the base meme philosophy emphasizing cultural heritage, tolerance, and social harmony, these practices manifested in religious celebrations and social rituals. From an Islamic legal perspective, such adaptations may be regarded as ‘urf sahih provided they do not conflict with Sharia principles. Thus, the study highlighted the significance of contextualizing Islamic law in pluralistic societies, demonstrating that cultural accommodation need not imply theological compromise.

Indonesia is a democratic country. Every believer is free to worship according to their beliefs. But in fact, it is still found disharmonious relationship and violence acts between Islamic minority groups or other minority adherents and Islamic majority groups. Based on Setara Institute, there are still 201 violations (2017) and 208 (2016) in this country. Then, bom terrors to minorities groups still happen (On May 13, 2018 in Surabaya). This article aims to describe the meaning of interreligious relationship, the portrait of interreligious relationship in Indonesia, and how to foster tolerance and defend minority groups in the context of Indonesian Islam. This article is analyzed by using “the theory of interreligious relationship perspective”. This paper concluded that: the first, to avoid religious conflict and violent acts, everyone must return to the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). The second, Islamic minority groups or minority religious adherents are not allowed to be oppressed by any other groups because of different belief. The violent acts are contrary to the 1945 Constitution and Pancasila. Everyone has right to live in the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). The third, imams, ulamas, and religious leaders can function to be deterrent in religion conflict and violent acts by doing dialogue or win-win solution while referring to Islamic traditions. This study is hoped to be researched and explored more comprehensive in the future in order harmonious religious life in Indonesia will be better.

This article aims to explain hate speech in Indonesia and its solution. The theory used in this article is Critical Race Theory which is initiated by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic. This Critical Race Theory is also sustained by an Islamic perspective so as to be found the causes of hate speech and solutions that must be done. This paper concludes that: First, hate speech in Indonesia is verbally and non-verbally done which is delivered both directly and indirectly (social media). Second, hate speech in Indonesia causes social inequality, non-respectful attitudes, and national decline. Third, hate speech does not reflect the character of the Indonesian people who uphold ethics and the values of nationalism. Fourth, hate speech triggers violence and intolerance of religions, ethnicities, races, and groups. Hate speech must be jointly solved by government, religious leaders and society.
