Abstract

In the era of globalization and digital media, translating educational animation subtitles across cultures is crucial for effectively delivering messages to children in different languages. This study aims to examine the use of representative illocutionary acts and politeness strategies in the dialogue of the Arabic animated series Siraj and its Indonesian subtitle translation. The urgency of the research lies in the lack of pragmatic studies that combine Searle's speech theory and Leech's principle of Politeness in the context of translating children's animation, especially from Arabic to Indonesian. Using a descriptive qualitative method, Siraj's dialogue data were analyzed to identify the types of representative actions (e.g., statements, descriptions, reports) and the utilization of the six maxims of Politeness (wisdom, generosity, appreciation, humility, agreement, and sympathy). The results of the study show that all speech in Siraj's dialogue is representative of illocution, and the translation of the subtitles maintains the illocution's function without shifting its meaning. In addition, every principle of Politeness in the original dialogue—such as subtle instruction, agreeing with opinions, praise, being humble, and empathetic—is consistently reflected in the translation. These findings confirm the importance of pragmatic sensitivity in subtitle translation, ensuring that educational messages and moral values remain intact for cross-cultural audiences. Theoretically, this study enriches cross-linguistic pragmatic research in audiovisual translation, while, practically, it encourages translators to attend to aspects of speech and Politeness in subtitles to enhance translation quality.

Abstract

Discourse on jihad in hadith studies often becomes distorted due to the separation of texts from their historical and pragmatic contexts, which in turn leads to the legitimation of violence and the rise of religious militancy. This study develops an integrated analytical model to restore the meaning of jihad within the framework of propheticethics and communication. By combining a pragmatic speech-act approach with Berger and Luckmann’s social construction theory, this analytical framework links the communicative functions of the Prophet’s sayings—including illocutionary types, linguistic conditions, implicatures, asbāb al-wurūd, and the context of defensivewarfare—with the social construction of hadith meaning through externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Three key hadiths are examined: umirtu an uqātila an-nās, al-harb khud‘ah, and the prohibition against killing women and children. Findings reveal their directive-defensive, representative–commissive, and normative declarative characteristics, which affirm Islamic ethics of warfare. Sociologically, the three hadiths construct a rational, ethical, and humanistic understanding of jihad. In the digital era, literalist reception often ignores historical and communicative contexts, making contextual hadith literacy increasingly urgent. This study offers humanistic warethics principles and recommends expanding cross-madhhab hadith studies as well asdigital reception research for Islamic education and deradicalization initiatives.

Abstract

This study examines the revitalization of character education in Indonesia by recontextualizing Ki Hajar Dewantara’s principle “Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha” (to lead by example) within the dynamics of the digital age. Utilizing a qualitative literature review, the research identifies three core challenges hindering effective moral education: the erosion of professional teacher identity due to administrative overload, increasing ethical breaches in digital interactions, and fragmented policy implementation that fails to support value-based learning. The study finds that restoring teachers’ moral leadership is essential for embedding ethical behavior in educational settings, both offline and online. To address these issues, an integrative character education framework is proposed, combining the Among pedagogical approach, the Tripusat Pendidikan system (family, school, and community synergy), and the 4N model (Niteni, Nirokke, Nambahi, Nularke) for value internalization. This model fosters the embodiment of ethical values through consistent teacher role-modeling, community involvement, and culturally grounded pedagogy. The study concludes that character education in the digital era demands a systemic transformation, restoring the teacher’s role as a moral exemplar, aligning educational practices with local wisdom, and reinforcing ethical technology to cultivate morally resilient students equipped to navigate contemporary challenges
