Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of cleanliness-based mutual cooperation practices on students’ ecological awareness at Diponegoro Islamic Boarding School, Bali. The research employed a quantitative approach using an explanatory research design. The population consisted of 65 students, all of whom were included as the research sample. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire developed based on Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus theory and Stern’s Environmental Awareness Theory. The data were analyzed using classical assumption tests and simple linear regression with SPSS version 26. The findings indicate that cleanliness-based mutual cooperation has a very strong and significant effect on students’ ecological awareness, with a coefficient of determination of 80.6%. This result demonstrates that collective and consistently implemented social practices within the boarding school environment are highly effective in shaping students’ ecological awareness across cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. In conclusion, the habituation of mutual cooperation in cleanliness activities represents an effective strategy for fostering ecological character education in Islamic boarding schools and holds strong potential to be developed as a sustainable, value based environmental education model grounded in Islamic principles.

Abstract

In this era of disruption and globalisation, Islamic education is required not only to teach normative teachings, but also to instil progressive values that are relevant to the times. Muhammadiyah, as a modernist Islamic movement, offers the concept of ‘Islam Berkemajuan’ (Progressive Islam), which encompasses the values of rationality, renewal, social justice, and openness to science. The Kemuhammadiyahan textbook at the junior high school/MTs level is a strategic instrument in transmitting these values to the younger generation. This study aims to analyse the representation of Progressive Islam values in Muhammadiyah textbooks used in Muhammadiyah educational institutions. Using a qualitative approach and a contextual hermeneutic content analysis method, this study examines how values such as tajdid, social tauhid, enlightenment, and tolerance are represented in narratives and learning materials. The results show that the textbooks generally contain Progressive Islam values, especially in terms of intellectual renewal, social commitment, and the integration of faith and knowledge. However, some aspects, such as ecological awareness and the digitalisation of Islamic values, still receive little attention. These findings recommend strengthening a more comprehensive and contextual Progressive Islam-based curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the configuration of religious authority of Habib and Gus in contemporary Islamic education within the digital sphere, examining how nasab, pesantren scholarship, and charisma are constructed, reproduced, and contested on social media. The research employs a qualitative approach with an interpretative case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with Habib, Gus, santri, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and digital congregants; participatory observation of online da'wah activities and documentation study of social media content and digital da'wah archives. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Matthew B. Miles, A. Michael Huberman, and Johnny Saldaña, grounded in the theoretical framework of authority proposed by Max Weber and the theory of symbolic capital developed by Pierre Bourdieu. The findings indicate that the authority of Habib on social media is primarily constructed through nasab as symbolic capital, which gains legitimacy through collective recognition and digital representation. In contrast, the authority of Gus is more dominantly grounded in scholarship and pesantren based sanad, representing the continuity of Islamic intellectual tradition. Furthermore, the study identifies the emergence of digital charisma, formed through communicative performativity, emotional interaction, and technological mediation, thereby reinforcing audience loyalty within virtual communities. Social media functions as a new religious arena that both expands and intensifies symbolic contestation between genealogical legitimacy and scholarly legitimacy.
