Abstract

This study examines the effect of academic progression on EFL learning self-efficacy among English Education students at a state university in Indonesia. Although self-efficacy has been widely recognized as a key factor influencing learners’ motivation, engagement, and academic performance, limited research in the Indonesian context has explored whether confidence levels differ meaningfully across academic stages. To address this gap, the study compared the self-efficacy of second-year and third-year students using a quantitative comparative design. A total of 30 participants completed a validated Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability testing, assumption checks, and independent samples t-tests. The results showed that both groups demonstrated moderately high self-efficacy, with third-year students reporting slightly higher scores; however, the difference was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that academic progression alone may not substantially influence learners’ self-efficacy when instructional conditions and learning experiences remain relatively similar. The study highlights the need for providing meaningful mastery experiences and supportive pedagogical practices to strengthen self-efficacy development across students’ academic journeys in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

Translation plays an important role in bridging linguistic and cultural differences, especially in literary texts where meanings are closely connected to cultural symbols and values. However, previous studies have mainly focused on non-literary translation or the classification of translation strategies, leaving the preservation of deeper symbolic and cultural meanings in literary works underexplored. This study aims to analyze the translation strategies used in preserving culture-specific items (CSIs) in Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant and its Indonesian translation Raksasa Egois translated by Clara Ng and published by Fiksi Lotus in 2013. A qualitative comparative text analysis was employed by comparing the source text and target text to identify CSIs and examine the translation strategies applied. The findings reveal that literal translation, cultural equivalence, and adaptation were the main strategies used, with literal translation being the most dominant, particularly in ecological elements such as seasons and natural phenomena. While literal translation effectively preserves lexical meaning, it is less successful in maintaining deeper symbolic and cultural meanings embedded in the literary text. In contrast, cultural equivalence proves to be more effective in preserving religious meanings, while adaptation improves readability but reduces cultural specificity. In conclusion, the effectiveness of translation strategies depends on the type and cultural embeddedness of CSIs.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance senior high school students’ listening comprehension and learning motivation through multimedia-based activities using English songs and a short film. The program was motivated by limited exposure to authentic listening input and the lack of integrated multimedia approaches in English classrooms. The activity was conducted in the form of a workshop involving 35 students through guided listening tasks using a pop song, a short film, and a planned Quizizz activity that could not be implemented due to time constraints. Data were collected through classroom observations, students’ worksheets, and informal feedback. The results indicate high levels of student engagement, enthusiasm, and collaborative interaction during the learning process. Worksheet analysis shows improvement in vocabulary recognition, understanding of key information, and interpretation of audiovisual cues. These findings suggest that multimedia-based listening instruction is effective in improving students’ motivation and listening comprehension and should be sustainably integrated into English language teaching practices.

Abstract

Low motivation and engagement among beginner-level santri in learning English in non-formal educational settings have become challenges in mastering English vocabulary. This community service program aimed to improve the vocabulary size of santri at Rumah Qur’an Bani Khamta through digital technology-based English learning using YouTube, Canva, and Kahoot. The implementation method used direct practice targeting early-age santri. The activities were carried out through the introduction of basic vocabulary materials, the use of educational videos, Canva-based worksheets, and Kahoot interactive quizzes. Evaluation was conducted through observation of the students’ participation, enthusiasm, and responses during the learning process. The results showed that the use of digital media and gamification was able to increase the santri’s enthusiasm, active participation, and self-confidence in using English. This program had a positive impact on improving vocabulary size and creating a more interactive, enjoyable, and meaningful learning environment.
